Today I'm introducing Seongsu Makguksu, where I went after work with my best friend. It's a new restaurant near my home, so I was curious. It's popular as a lunch spot for office workers in Seongsu these days, but we dropped in on the way home and ordered bossam and perilla oil makguksu (buckwheat noodles) for dinner. 🍜 Let's get right into the review!
Seongsu Makguksu at a glance

What kind of place is Seongsu Makguksu?

It promises 100% buckwheat noodles made in-house, and besides makguksu it sells a variety of Korean dishes like bossam, suyuk (boiled pork slices) and jeon (savory pancakes).

At lunch there's also the Seongsu Hansang set, combining makguksu and suyuk, so it's a good pick for people hunting for a Seongsu office-worker lunch. I went for dinner with my best friend after work, because I was sooo curious about this new place near my home. That day we ordered bossam and perilla oil makguksu and shared both.
Atmosphere at Seongsu Makguksu
Here's what it looks like inside~ It's new, so of course it's clean!

It's evening so you can't see outside, but these are floor-to-ceiling windows~ It feels nice and open.

Buckwheat tea and basic side dishes
At Seongsu Makguksu they bring two pitchers, one cold water and one warm, and the warm one is buckwheat tea~ I'm a cold-water person, but I warmed up with the hot tea first. So toasty and nutty~ The side dishes are simple.

⬆️ Napa cabbage and perilla leaves

⬆️ Young radish kimchi (yeolmu-kimchi)
And salted shrimp, chili garlic and ssamjang (seasoned dipping paste). That's it~~ Just what you need.
Seongsu Makguksu bossam (small) ₩30,000: portion and what's included
The small bossam at Seongsu Makguksu is ₩30,000, and the pork came on one plate with bossam kimchi, seasoned radish filling and spicy seasoned pollock.

It's ₩30,000.. and I was a bit surprised at how generous it was~ They also cut the bossam kimchi into bite-size pieces right at the table. The young staffer cut it so neatly and prettily~

I liked that the kimchi, radish filling and spicy pollock you eat with bossam all come together at once. The pork was tender yet chewy, just right~ It wasn't dry at all, boiled soft, and it totally suited my taste~~~
Soft bossam with crunchy kimchi and radish filling gave lots of texture, and adding the spicy pollock made yet another combo~ It's a makguksu place, but if you're a meat lover who feels sad without meat, definitely~~!! order the bossam at Seongsu Makguksu!
Seongsu Makguksu perilla oil makguksu ₩12,000: how to eat it well

To really enjoy the nutty flavor of the perilla oil makguksu (₩12,000), it's important to mix the noodles and sauce thoroughly before eating. At first the noodles and sauce can feel separate, but once I mixed everything evenly and ate it with the sauce, the nuttiness of the perilla oil came right up and the seasoning was spot on...! It's a dish for enjoying the nutty perilla oil rather than a punchy sauce.

Eating a bite of makguksu between bites of bossam was an amazing combo!
Tip: don't cut the buckwheat noodles
There were scissors on the table and I cut my noodles without thinking. Why would you cut buckwheat noodles~!! Silly me!! Don't cut them, just eat them as they are! They break easily so there's no need to cut at all, and I think longer noodles give you a better texture and taste of the perilla oil makguksu.
