After seeing the Kikeuni (키크니) exhibition at DDP, the writer ordered grilled Iberico rib finger and neck (32,000 won), prosciutto pasta (19,000 won) and the new gochujang cream risotto (24,000 won), and Athlonga served all three plates at once. A DDP Dongdaemun spot, Athlonga: a stylish Western dinner date at a Heart Signal 4 filming location

Athlonga, visited during a DDP Dongdaemun date

On a day off, my partner and I went to Dongdaemun to see the Keerncoo exhibition. It felt like a waste to just see the exhibition and go home, so I looked for somewhere with a nice atmosphere to have dinner too — and that's how we ended up at Athlonga, also famous as a Heart Signal 4 filming spot~~

My partner, a huge Heart Signal fan, got so excited and said "Is this really the place?!" Thanks to that we got to see the exhibition and enjoy a great meal, a proper Seoul date after a while. If you're looking for a good restaurant near Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, this is worth checking out, so let me introduce it in detail.

How close is Athlonga to Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station?

Athlonga was easy to get to from Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station. It's a walkable distance after seeing an exhibition at DDP, so it made for a perfect date course.

Athlonga's entrance, opened by pressing a wine bottle
The atmosphere in front of Athlonga's entrance

I could feel it even before stepping inside — oh, this is a good place, judging by the vibe alone..! The first thing that surprised me was the entrance itself. You press down on a wine bottle and the automatic door opens, like stepping into another world. Once inside, the sleek interior caught my eye next.

The lighting was soft and the tables had plenty of space between them, making it a great atmosphere for conversation. Even on a weekday evening it was packed, and surprisingly, I could spot about three tables that looked like blind dates.

Watching people show up straight from work for a blind date, I thought 'wow, everyone is really on top of things...' haha 😂 It made total sense why this place is so popular for blind dates, anniversaries, and date nights — the atmosphere really delivers.

What to order on your first visit to Athlonga

Ordering Athlonga's best-seller menu items
Athlonga's three menu items served together at once

Since it was our first visit, we ordered mostly the best-seller menu items.

  • Iberico rib finger & neck grilled pork (₩32,000)
  • Prosciutto pasta (₩19,000)
  • Gochujang cream risotto (₩24,000)

Orders seemed backed up, so the food took a little while, but they brought all three dishes out together, which actually made it nicer to enjoy them side by side. Once I tasted everything, the wait was absolutely worth it :)

How does the signature Iberico rib finger & neck grilled pork taste?

Personally, the dish I remember most was, without question, Athlonga's Iberico rib finger & neck grilled pork. Honestly, it was so tender it barely felt like pork.

Isn't this more tender than beef?

My partner said this after just one bite. There was no gamey smell at all, and getting to try both the rib finger and neck cuts together meant a nice variety of textures too.

The garnishes and sauces that came with it were varied enough that I never got tired of it, right to the last bite. Once again — signature menus earn that title for a reason!

The clean charm of the prosciutto pasta

Athlonga's oil-based prosciutto pasta

Athlonga's prosciutto pasta (₩19,000) is oil-based and overall has a clean, light style. The salty flavor of the prosciutto brings out the savoriness without being overwhelming, so it was clean and enjoyable to eat. It also paired well with the meat dish, and since it wasn't greasy, I kept going back for more.

If you like oil-based pastas, this is a menu item you'll be satisfied with.

How spicy is the new gochujang cream risotto?

Athlonga's new gochujang cream risotto

I was curious about the gochujang (fermented chili paste) cream risotto (₩24,000) since it's a new menu item, so I chose it. My first bite made me think 'is the gochujang flavor a bit strong?' but as I kept eating, the cream naturally softened that flavor, and the balance of spicy and nutty was really nice.

It was spicier than I expected, so I'd especially recommend it to people who love spicy food. It wasn't greasy and had an addictive flavor that kept me coming back for more.

Thoughtful service, right down to the blanket

The AC was blasting cold air during our meal and I got a little chilly, but a staff member brought me a blanket, which I really appreciated. It's a small thing, but that kind of thoughtful care made the meal so much more comfortable. With service like that on top of everything else, it made for a truly pleasant evening.

The atmosphere at Athlonga, a DDP Dongdaemun date course

On this day off, I got to see the Keerncoo exhibition and enjoy delicious Western food — a proper date after a long time. Athlonga especially has that fun bonus of being a Heart Signal 4 filming location, plus a stylish atmosphere and great food that satisfied me all around. This is a day I'll remember for a while.
