Deodeo Ganjanggejang Muhalliripil (더더간장게장무한리필) is an all-you-can-eat soy sauce crab (ganjang gejang) and spicy marinated crab restaurant on Wondang-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi. The writer, on a wedding-prep diet, arrived at the 11am weekend opening with her parents and had the ₩24,900 per person set of soy crab, spicy crab, crab stew, ramyeon noodles and steamed egg; the crab wasn't too salty, and her puffiness the next day was mild. Verdict: Deodeo Ganjanggejang Muhalliripil is a very satisfying weekend spot for a family meal with your parents.

Ikseon-dong pizza lunch after wedding ring pickup: Backstreet Pizza

Backstreet Pizza is a pizza restaurant in Ikseon-dong, near Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul. On a holiday trip to Jongno to pick up their wedding rings, a couple ordered a regular Quarter Street Signature Pizza (38,000 won) and two drinks for 44,000 won in total, ate their fill and took the leftover pizza home. With four flavors and three sauces, Backstreet Pizza made a generous, never-boring Jongno date lunch for two.

Geomdan omakase bar birthday dinner with chogye noodles: Matgim

Matgim (맡김) is an omakase bar in Dangha-dong, Geomdan New Town, Incheon, inside the Megabox Geomdan building, serving a chef's-choice course (matgimcharim) that changes every season. For her birthday, the writer took her mom to Matgim for the July course, Matgimcharim 3.5, and enjoyed every summer dish, from the octopus and sweet corn cob salad and dried zucchini chogye noodles (cold chicken-broth noodles) to the sous vide pork tenderloin steak and watermelon omija granita. With its quiet, warm atmosphere, Matgim is a good pick for birthdays, anniversaries and dates.

Korean pub in Gwangju with chilled pork jowl & chamnamul: Jumak Inho

Jumak Inho (주막인호) is a Korean pub near Geumnam-ro 5-ga Station in Dong-gu, Gwangju, that serves only traditional Korean liquor. On the first evening of a two-day summer trip to Gwangju, the writer and a friend ordered chilled pork jowl (hangjeong naengsuyuk), sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew), a bowl of rice and Boksundoga makgeolli, and even the writer, who doesn't usually enjoy makgeolli, liked how clean Boksundoga tasted. Jumak Inho is a stylish Gwangju bar for traditional liquor and Korean drinking food at easygoing prices.

Pork galbi house near Pungmu Station, Gimpo: day-off lunch

Galbigumteo Pungmu Station Branch is a charcoal-grilled pork galbi (marinated pork ribs) restaurant on Pungmu-ro in Pungmu-dong, Gimpo. On a day off, two of us went at midday, skipped the daytime drinks, and shared 3 servings of domestic pork galbi (250g for 15,900 won per serving), Gimpo Geumssal rice, mul naengmyeon (cold noodles in broth) and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). The meat had no gamey smell and stayed juicy, the side dishes were lightly seasoned, and Galbigumteo Pungmu Station Branch opens from the morning with free parking in front and behind, making it a solid choice for lunch, work dinners or family meals.

Dongdaemun date restaurant: Iberico pork & gochujang risotto, Athlonga

Athlonga (아스론가) is a Western restaurant on Dongho-ro 34-gil in Jung-gu, Seoul, near Dongdaemun History & Culture Park Station, and is known as a filming location for Heart Signal 4. After seeing the Kikeuni (키크니) exhibition at DDP, the writer ordered grilled Iberico rib finger and neck (32,000 won), prosciutto pasta (19,000 won) and the new gochujang cream risotto (24,000 won), and Athlonga served all three plates at once. With three blind-date tables in the room, Athlonga is a strong pick for a date or anniversary dinner near DDP.

Seoul bar for a birthday in Yeonnam-dong: shomaek at Koma Yeonnam

Koma Yeonnam is a newly opened izakaya bar in Yeonnam-dong, Mapo-gu, Seoul, set in a basement on Yeonhui-ro 1-gil within walking distance of Hongik University Station. For a birthday dinner, the writer and her partner ordered maguro avocado tart, charcoal-grilled beef prime and tori paitan ramen, with the signature shomaek (shochu and draft beer) and shochu to drink. Soft lighting and well-spaced tables kept conversation easy, making Koma Yeonnam an easy recommendation for a date in Yeonnam-dong.
