Seoul Korean BBQ for four: samhap and yuksashimi at Chowon Salt Grill
In short
Chowon Salt Grill (초원소금구이) is a long-standing Korean BBQ restaurant in Bangi-dong, Songpa, Seoul, specializing in samhap: hanwoo special cuts, pen shell scallop and aged Haenam kimchi (mukeunji). A group of four ordered the 3-person samhap set, liked it enough to add a 2-person samhap, and was won over by the house soy sauce and a complimentary plate of yuksashimi (Korean raw beef). Chowon Salt Grill is a Bangi-dong hanwoo spot worth revisiting for a get-together with friends or a work dinner.

What kind of BBQ restaurant is Chowon Salt Grill in Bangi-dong?
Chowon Salt Grill (초원소금구이) is a BBQ restaurant in Bangi-dong whose signature dish is samhap: hanwoo (Korean beef) special cuts, scallop and aged Haenam kimchi eaten together. If you want proper hanwoo in Bangi-dong, this is the place I'd recommend. One visit and you'll see why so many people come. It has the feel of an old, well-loved neighborhood joint, yet the quality of the meat is excellent, and I was very satisfied.

Is the interior good for a group dinner?

With its friendly old-school atmosphere and comfortable seating, Chowon Salt Grill suits get-togethers with friends, family meals and company dinners. The nostalgic vibe hits you the moment you walk in. The decor isn't over the top and the seating is comfy, so it's good for a drink with friends and fits family gatherings or team dinners too.
It's cozy and relaxed rather than loud and rowdy, which I liked even more. I could see why it keeps getting recommended to people looking for a group-dinner spot in Bangi-dong.
How was the hanwoo quality?
Chowon Salt Grill uses only 100% hanwoo, which makes it easier to trust. These days many people care about origin and quality, and here the freshness and quality of the meat were obvious at a glance. The grain of the meat was vivid and the bright red color looked great, so my expectations were up just from looking.

How much samhap should four people order?
Four of us went and first ordered the 3-person samhap set. It was so good that we ended up adding a 2-person samhap as well. That shows how satisfying the meal was.

The special soy sauce and Haenam aged kimchi are the heart of the samhap
The house special soy sauce is a big part of the charm of the samhap here. It isn't just salty or sweet; it has a deep savory (umami) richness that lifts the flavor of the hanwoo. Dipping in salt alone is wonderful too, but with the special sauce you get a different pleasure.
The aged kimchi was also key. The Haenam kimchi has a gentle tang that neatly cuts the richness of the brisket and keeps it from feeling greasy. So you never get tired of it and keep eating to the end. After trying it myself, I fully understood why this samhap is famous.

How to grill the brisket and scallop, and how they taste
For the samhap, you heat the grill, cook the brisket and scallop, then eat them in one bite with the Haenam aged kimchi. The brisket, cooked just right, was full of rich flavor, and the scallop was moist yet plump and springy. Add well-ripened Haenam kimchi on top, eat it all in one bite, and you really get what samhap is about.
The quality of the meat itself was outstanding too. Perhaps because the hanwoo is so fresh, it was juicy, and the savory taste deepened the more I chewed. Even with no seasoning, just a light dip in salt, it was plenty tasty. Really good meat can be enjoyed with salt alone, and Chowon Salt Grill's hanwoo is exactly that style.

Generous portions; we added more because it was so good
The samhap came in generous portions, enough for four people. Yes, we ordered more, but not because it was too little; we just loved it so much we wanted more. Each hanwoo special cut had a slightly different texture and flavor, which made eating it fun.

The best samhap combination
My favorite combo at Chowon Salt Grill was wrapping brisket, scallop and aged kimchi together and giving it a light dip in the special soy sauce. The savoriness of the meat, the umami of the scallop and the tang of the kimchi blend perfectly, and the flavor fills your mouth. It's not harsh, yet you keep craving it, so our chopsticks never stopped. 👍👍👍

Free hanwoo yuksashimi (raw beef) as a service dish
During the meal, Chowon Salt Grill also brought out yuksashimi (raw beef) as a free service dish. It was so fresh there was no gamey taste at all, and I loved how it melted softly in the mouth. It was clean-tasting with a faint sweetness, and the deep flavor typical of hanwoo came out the more I chewed. The quality was so good it was hard to believe it was free, which made the meal even better.
The staff were friendly overall too. From the quality of the meat to the service and the atmosphere, everything satisfied me, and it's a place I remember wanting to revisit.
Verdict: hanwoo samhap for a group dinner in Bangi-dong and Jamsil
If you want to properly experience samhap made of hanwoo special cuts, scallop and aged Haenam kimchi, Chowon Salt Grill is well worth a visit. It's good with a drink and highly satisfying for get-togethers or company dinners. If you're looking for BBQ in Bangi-dong, I confidently recommend it for both the hanwoo quality and the harmony of the samhap.
If you want good hanwoo in Jamsil or a special samhap experience, I recommend making a trip to Chowon Salt Grill. The old-school feel, excellent hanwoo and savory samhap all satisfied me. It holds its own as a Jamsil BBQ spot too, and with good company it will be an even better time.
