Suyu BBQ restaurant, wasabi grill and DIY fried rice: Suyu Daewang
In short
Suyu Daewang Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is a budget Korean BBQ restaurant near the food alley by Suyu Station in Gangbuk, Seoul, where a 200g serving of thick-cut pork belly or pork neck costs 9,900 won. Three friends ordered 3 servings of pork belly with extra mushrooms, cold buckwheat noodles, beef tartare and 5 bottles of soju and beer, and still paid under 30,000 won each. Me and my friends finally met up near Suyu's food alley after ages apart, and everyone was craving meat. So I took them to Suyu Daewang Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, a budget-friendly pork belly spot that's been around in Suyu forever. Fair warning — the sign outside says "So Meogeumyeon Dwaeji" butcher shop, but yes, this is the same cauldron-lid pork belly place!

Suyu Daewang prices: 9,900 won for 200g of thick-cut pork belly
At Suyu Daewang Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal, one serving (200g) of whole pork belly or pork neck is ₩9,900, and the 600g full set is ₩29,000. The name literally means "giant cauldron lid," and the style here is grilling the meat and all sorts of ingredients together on one huge cauldron lid. Honestly, anything grilled on a cauldron lid is bound to taste good, but the price here is genuinely wild haha.
In this era of crazy inflation, you might worry meat this cheap could smell off or be tough, but there was zero smell and it was so tender — crispy outside, juicy inside. My friends were shocked too, wondering how this quality was possible at this price.
What's on the free self-serve bar — and the 5,000 won food waste charge
The self-serve bar at Suyu Daewang Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal is free, and the variety of side dishes you can grill alongside the meat is insane. The basic lineup includes bean sprouts, lettuce wraps, scallions, water dropwort, kimchi, chives, bean sprouts, and way more!

You just grab whatever side dishes you want from the self-serve bar, and the owner is seriously generous. Maybe it's because there's a college area nearby, but it felt like they were just giving stuff away haha. That said, a lot of people leave food unfinished, so there's a ₩5,000 per person environmental fee if you do — I'd recommend only taking as much as you'll actually eat!

Three servings of pork belly, extra mushrooms and the wasabi grill

After some deliberation, we went with 3 servings of whole pork belly plus a mushroom add-on. Two of us are total mushroom fanatics, so we ordered it, and honestly it was such a good call haha.
Once we saw the color the meat turned while grilling, none of us could resist soju, so we ended up doing the classic soju-and-samgyeopsal combo.

💡 A trick I picked up from chef Yoon Nam-no! This place also sells beef, like a whole-cow-style menu, at good prices, so the self-serve bar has wasabi and sesame oil dipping sauce on hand. I tried Yoon Nam-no's tip of spreading wasabi all over the pork belly before grilling it, and it cut through the greasiness so cleanly it was genuinely delicious. Definitely recommend trying it this way!
Sides at Suyu Daewang: cold buckwheat noodles, beef tartare and fried rice on the cauldron lid
As we kept drinking soju, we felt like we needed more food, so we added a side of cold noodles and a side of beef tartare.

The cold noodle broth was exactly my style — it honestly felt like it was helping me sober up while I drank haha. After finishing the meat, I was going to order fried rice separately, but there was still a decent amount of leftover bean sprouts, kimchi, water dropwort and other side veggies on the cauldron lid, so we decided to make self-serve fried rice instead, partly to dodge the environmental fee too.
We ordered a bowl of rice, cut up the leftover bits of meat, and chopped up the mushrooms, kimchi, bean sprouts and chives to fry it all together. Honestly, how could this combo not taste good? It was just classic Korean BBQ fried rice, but done perfectly — we scraped the pan clean.

What three of us paid at Suyu Daewang — the verdict

The three of us ordered 3 servings of whole pork belly, added a bunch of sides, and drank quite a lot (5 bottles of soju and beer?), but it still came out to under ₩30,000 per person. With how scary dining out prices are these days, it's hard to even go out for meat, but Suyu Daewang Sotttukkeong Samgyeopsal was so satisfying with its genuinely good value and great meat quality! The interior is also pretty spacious, so it seems perfect for group gatherings or company dinners too.
