Mother-daughter dinner in Sangmu, Gwangju: pizza to go at Camel Orzo
In short
Camel Orzo is an Italian restaurant on Uncheon-ro in the Sangmu district of Gwangju. Booking ahead and coming with her mother, the writer ordered two à la carte dishes — the bottarga cuttlefish aglio olio at 18,800 won and the seasonal fig autunno fresco wood-fired pizza at 28,600 won — and gave the generously topped fig pizza a full five stars. The two of them could not finish it, so the three leftover slices were boxed up through Camel Orzo's kiosk takeout option.

Today's a date with my mom! We visited Camel Orzo, an Italian restaurant on Uncheon-ro in the Sangmu district.

What Camel Orzo looks like from the street in Sangmu, Gwangju
Camel Orzo is on the 1st floor of Urban Peak Sangmu, 261 Uncheon-ro, Seo-gu, Gwangju. Looking at the outside first, the entrance already gives off an Italian feel!

The Italian flag hanging by the entrance plus the CAMEL ORZO logo add to the exotic atmosphere. The building itself feels less like a typical restaurant and more like a dining spot tucked into a little Italian alley, so it was great for photos too 🤎

Camel Orzo's outdoor terrace seats
Another highlight of Camel Orzo is the outdoor terrace! Along the side of the building there are tables and rattan-style chairs, with potted plants and greenery scattered around — the vibe is genuinely great!!
During the day it feels like an exotic café, and in the evening it seems like a lovely spot for dining. The weather was nice so we thought about eating on the terrace, but since we'd made a reservation, we ate inside haha.
Inside Camel Orzo: tables and seating

Inside, Camel Orzo mostly has large tables for four, several of them lined up. On one side there's a glass-block partition and a big mirror, and the reflection in the mirror made the space feel bigger than it actually is — nice touch.
How the table is set at Camel Orzo
Once we sat down, the tableware was neatly set: a white plate with classically designed fork, knife, and spoon, plus a water glass and a wine glass already in place — looks like they expect a lot of wine drinking here!
Camel Orzo menu and prices

Camel Orzo offers lunch sets, a happy hour set, a dinner course, and à la carte dishes. The lunch sets split into a Signature Set and a Famiglia Set. At first I considered ordering a lunch set, but that day I really wanted wood-fired pizza, so we went à la carte and focused on pizza! 🍕
Like this:
- Botarga cuttlefish aglio olio ₩18,800
- Fig autunno fresco pizza ₩28,600
They brought us an order slip and aprons. They really seem to take care of these little thoughtful details 🎀
When the first dish, the pasta, arrived, house-made pickles 🥒 came with it. Judging by the pink color, I think there's beet in there too!

Bottarga cuttlefish aglio olio, 18,800 won
Camel Orzo's botarga cuttlefish aglio olio is ₩18,800. Along with the pasta tongs, they gave us a plastic glove — the cuttlefish pasta comes topped with lemon zest, and they explained that after tasting a bite, if you like the flavor, you can use the glove to squeeze extra lemon over it yourself 👍🏻
Oh, it looked so pretty that my mom and I both gasped 😮
There was a generous amount of cuttlefish on top, and the lemon zest on top cuts through any heaviness nicely. You can squeeze extra lemon on according to your taste!
The mantecatura seemed done really well — the sauce was great!
Twirled it up and gave my mom a bite! I tried it too and was surprised — the squid wasn't chewy at all and was delicious!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Seasonal fig autunno fresco pizza, 28,600 won
Next up, the fig fresco pizza. Camel Orzo's fig autunno fresco is a seasonal wood-fired pizza priced at ₩28,600.

It came generously topped with figs, arugula, basil leaves, tomato, jambon, and ricotta cheese.

The toppings were seriously abundant. This was genuinely delicious ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommend if you love wood-fired pizza and this kind of salad-style topping!!!

The toppings were so abundant that you could taste several different flavors within a single slice!!

The combo of sweet fig + salty jamón + creamy ricotta cheese worked especially well together, and the tomato's tanginess in between added to how harmonious the whole thing tasted!

Ah, this was from today but looking at it now, I already want to eat it again.

The figs were genuinely fresh and delicious too.

Seriously abundant toppings.
Taking leftover pizza home from the Camel Orzo kiosk
The two of us couldn't finish it, so we packed up three slices. Camel Orzo's kiosk has a 'pack the leftover pizza' option — just select it and you're done!
