Sangmu district hairtail restaurant for a workday lunch: Galchi Hanpan

Hi everyone :) I was out for work in the Sangmu district and had a craving for braised fish, so I stopped by Galchi Hanpan (갈치한판). The outside already has that pojangmacha (street tent bar) vibe I love! Inside was clean and open, which I really liked. I had a solid lunch with the braised hairtail set, which is great for a midday meal 🧡

Where is Galchi Hanpan in Gwangju's Sangmu district?

Galchi Hanpan is on the 1st floor at 61 Sangmuyeonha-ro, Seo-gu, Gwangju, South Korea, on the corner next to Sangmu-jigu byeolmijip. It's across from Central Tourist Hotel and across from Jeonju Hyundaiok haha

The outside really nails that pojangmacha feel, and since I love that vibe, I was totally sold from the entrance haha

Street-stall feel outside, clean inside: the mood at Galchi Hanpan

Unlike the strong pojangmacha feel outside, the inside of Galchi Hanpan was clean. I expected a slightly more casual atmosphere, but once inside it was much cleaner than I thought.

The tables were kept spotless and the space felt open rather than cramped, which I liked. It had the mood I wanted while still being clean!

What we ordered that day at Galchi Hanpan was ✔️ the braised hairtail set, ₩15,000 per person × 2. It's not just the main dish on its own — it comes with several neatly arranged side dishes too, so the table felt full and generous! It's a particularly good option for office workers having lunch in Sangmu.

Every side dish at Galchi Hanpan also came out neat and tidy.

There was a good variety, and overall the seasoning wasn't too strong, so it paired well with the braised hairtail.

Put a bit of a side dish on each spoonful of rice, and before you know it, the whole bowl is gone!

How the braised hairtail tastes: thick fish, spicy-sweet sauce

Finally, the braised hairtail arrived! At first glance the fish looked quite thick, which made me instantly happy 💛

Since it had been a while since I'd had braised fish, it felt extra welcome haha

The hairtail meat was nutty and soft, and the sauce was spicy with a sweet edge. Flaking off the fish, piling it on rice, and adding a bit of sauce on top — it felt like a proper braised fish meal after a long time 🧡
