Gwangju lunch spot with a self-serve banchan bar: Galchi Hanpan

In short

Galchi Hanpan is a lunch restaurant serving braised and grilled hairtail near Exit 6 of Sangmu Station in Seo-gu, Gwangju. Arriving right at opening, the writer built a full spread from the self-serve banchan bar and ordered the lunch special braised hairtail set (galchi-jorim); the green onion kimchi was so good that half a bowl of rice was gone before the main arrived, and the hairtail came out thick and soft. It was a spicy Jeolla-style lunch made for mixing into white rice.

On a beautifully sunny day, I took a little trip to Jeolla-do and stopped by this place! Jeolla-do is famous for having genuinely delicious food, and hairtail on top of that! There was no way I could skip this, so I went straight there! Hairtail isn't a fish you get to eat every day, so having it as a stew out at a restaurant like this — this had to be tried!

Seats to spare at opening, full house by lunchtime at Galchi Hanpan

After parking nearby, we headed into Galchi Hanpan! We visited almost right at opening time, and as we ate, more and more people kept arriving. By lunchtime it was pretty much a full house! A place this good is bound to draw a crowd!

How the self-serve banchan bar works

Galchi Hanpan's self-serve bar was packed with all kinds of side dishes, and whatever runs low you can go refill yourself. Everything was laid out so neatly and fully stocked that it made for a pleasant meal from the start!

What makes meokgalchi hairtail different?

People kept saying meokgalchi ("black hairtail"), meokgalchi, so I got curious what that meant — apparently it's called meokgalchi because the silver scales wear off and the fish looks darker, almost blackish. The flesh is supposedly firmer and chewier, with a thicker fat layer, giving it a richer, nuttier flavor the more you chew. Just reading the description got me excited!

What's on the Galchi Hanpan menu

One wall of Galchi Hanpan has a big photo menu board, and honestly just looking at the pictures made me hungry! Every dish looked spicy yet clean-flavored. If you ever lose your appetite, coming here and having a full spread would surely bring it right back.

There's a dish that combines braised and grilled hairtail, spicy stir-fried pork, a squid-and-shrimp bomb jeon (pan-fried fritter) that looks crispy and chewy, and a whole whelk stew that's fun to pick apart shell by shell! Such a wide range of dishes!

Galchi Hanpan also has a lunch special menu — braised hairtail set, stir-fried pork set, and kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) set — all at a reasonable price for a full, filling meal. The best! It's such a hairtail-obsessed world here that whatever you order seems destined to be delicious.

A full banchan spread: half a bowl of rice gone on green onion kimchi alone

After we ordered, the owner set out a delicious spread of side dishes! Wow... just looking at the banchan alone, I felt like I could finish a whole bowl of rice on these. Jeolla-do side dishes, need I say more! Genuinely delicious.

The green onion kimchi in particular was so good that I'd already polished off half a bowl of rice before the main dish even arrived. Jeolla-do food is the best! Every single one had such deep, savory flavor that it built up my excitement for the main dish even more! So fun!

How was the lunch special braised hairtail set?

What I ordered was the braised hairtail set from Galchi Hanpan's lunch special. It came out in a genuinely huge hot pot, brimming with spicy-looking braised hairtail. Wow... just looking at it felt like a weight lifted off my chest — it seemed to sit right between spicy and chewy, and just seeing it got me excited!

It came out already boiling hot, so you just simmer it a little more before eating, and inside, the hairtail meat was so thick! Thick, tender flesh in a spicy, savory sauce, plus all kinds of vegetables packed in — absolutely perfect!

Piled onto white rice like this... wow, words fail me. This is a sauce you just can't recreate at home — it was so good I wanted to bring the leftover sauce home with me. The hairtail meat was so soft and nutty, practically melting in my mouth! Incredibly tender! Mixing a bowl of rice into the spicy sauce, then topping it with hairtail meat, I ate every last bit of Galchi Hanpan with total satisfaction! A hairtail specialist really does hairtail well! Galchi Hanpan, a must-visit lunch spot in Sangmu district — go try the braised hairtail for yourself!
