Wirye pork bone BBQ restaurant: grilled bones in morning buns at Muhan

In short

Muhan Gamjatang Ppyeoguii Seongnam Wirye Branch is a gamjatang (pork bone stew) and grilled pork bone restaurant on the first floor of Wirye Hanwha Obelisk Central Square in Seongnam, Gyeonggi. The BBQ grilled pork bone (medium, 44,000 won) came with the basic gamjatang broth, rice balls and morning buns, and the lightly smoky, sweet-and-spicy marinated pork backbone and rich gamjatang broth stood out. With generous portions and plenty of meat for the price, Muhan Gamjatang Ppyeoguii is worth a return visit to try other dishes.

I thought I already knew what gamjatang tastes like, but the deep flavor of the basic broth here stood out. The BBQ pork bone in particular, soaked in a spicy-sweet sauce, kept my hands busy the whole meal. Here is my honest review of the visit.

The tables are spaced widely and everything is kept clean, so I felt comfortable throughout the meal! The orange interior also gave the place a fresh, bright feel.

How does the gamjatang broth that comes with the BBQ pork bone (medium) taste?

We ordered the BBQ pork bone, medium, for ₩44,000. If you choose the basic gamjatang broth option, you get just the broth like this.

Basic gamjatang broth served with the BBQ pork bone (medium)

I believe the broth is the heart of any good gamjatang place, and Muhan's basic broth had a rich, savory depth right away. It tasted like it had been simmered for a long time, deep and full-bodied. Really impressive!

Even though this is just the basic gamjatang, it had plenty of ugeoji (dried cabbage leaves), cooked soft and blending well with the broth.

How was the BBQ pork bone at Muhan?

The star of the day was definitely the BBQ pork bone.

Before eating, I assumed it was just seasoned grilled ribs, but one bite completely changed my mind.

Sauce-soaked BBQ pork spine bones

The outside had a subtle smoky grill flavor while the meat inside stayed moist, so the texture was really good.

The spicy-sweet BBQ sauce had soaked well into the ribs, and I couldn't stop reaching for more.

It isn't just harshly seasoned; the savory depth comes through, so it works as a drinking snack and as a great meal too!

Picking the meat off the bones is fun, so it's nice for families to share, and it has a different charm from gamjatang.

Put the pork meat in a morning bun and brush on a little more sauce. Heavenly! I scraped up every last bit and ended up so full.. haha

Verdict: is Muhan Gamjatang Ppyeoguii Seongnam Wirye Branch worth the price?

I've had some disappointing meals at restaurants lately. For example, one mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) had such a fishy taste that I couldn't finish it, and one assorted sashimi plate had slices so thin that, at ₩50,000, I honestly couldn't understand the price.

Overall review photo at Muhan Gamjatang Ppyeoguii Seongnam Wirye Branch

Muhan Gamjatang Ppyeoguii Seongnam Wirye Branch was different. The portions were generous for the price, and the ribs had plenty of meat on them, so I was very satisfied. I could feel the care and quality in every dish, and I didn't feel it was a waste afterward at all. If anything, I want to come back and try other menu items.
