Euljiro pub's level 3 bone grill, hotter than billed: Eulji Baektan
In short
Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui (을지백탄뼈구이) is a Korean pub near Euljiro 3-ga Station in Jung-gu, Seoul, serving bone grill cooked over white charcoal (baektan). The writer ordered the small bone grill (2 servings) at level 3 heat. The menu rates level 3 as hot as Buldak fire noodles, but the bone grill felt hotter because it came straight off the fire, and the charcoal aroma, garlic marinade and whole grilled scallions stood out. Verdict: even spice lovers who want the bone grill tasty rather than painful should order level 2 at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui.

What is Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui in Euljiro?
Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui (을지백탄뼈구이) is a pub near Euljiro 3-ga Station whose signature dish is bone grill (ppyeogui, grilled meat on the bone) cooked over white charcoal. Euljiro has tons of great places for a drink, but this is one that has been getting buzz lately. Since the bone grill is cooked over white charcoal, just like the name says, you really get both the charcoal aroma and the smoky fire flavor.

This time I ordered the small bone grill (2 servings) at level 3 heat. The spicy sauce, deep smoky flavor and garlic made me crave a drink right away.

If you're looking for a different kind of meat dish in Euljiro, I'd really recommend giving it a try! haha

What's on the menu at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui?
Besides the signature bone grill, the menu was packed with dishes that work as drinking snacks or a meal: bone hangover soup, beef belly and garlic chive bibim noodles, brisket and cartilage and more haha. Check the photos for the full menu!

So if you come with a group, it seems like a good idea to order a few extras to go with the bone grill.

How does the small bone grill taste at level 3 heat?

The small bone grill (2 servings), the signature dish here, looked so appetizing it made my mouth water.

🔥Level 3 heat🔥 The spiciness was definitely there, but it wasn't just hot. The savory depth was alive too, so I kept reaching for more.

Charcoal smoke and garlic: the standout flavors
What impressed me most about the bone grill was the smoky char and the garlic! Maybe thanks to the white charcoal, the meat had a subtle charcoal aroma, and the garlic-packed sauce on top made the flavor really deep :)

It wasn't just a punchy sauce. The nutty flavor you only get from cooking over open flame and the savory garlic came together to make every bite addictive.

Is level 3 really only as hot as Buldak noodles?
The menu says level 3 is about Buldak noodle (Samyang's fire chicken instant noodles) heat, but hmm... to me it felt hotter than that.

For reference, I order Yeopddeok (Yupdduk Tteokbokki) one step above Original (I'm not a weakling when it comes to spice), and level 3 bone grill was somewhere between Yeopddeok Original and the hot level. It was served freshly grilled, so I think the high temperature made it feel even spicier.

So if I go back, I'll order level 2 to enjoy the heat while it still tastes good. Keep that in mind when you order!!

Whole grilled scallions served with the bone grill
Another thing that impressed me at Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui is that they grill scallions and serve them alongside. And whole scallions at that!!!!! The sight was shocking and I loved it too haha.

Well-grilled scallions get sweeter, so eaten with the bone grill they naturally tame the spiciness and make the flavor even richer.

Adding grilled scallions made the texture and flavor much better balanced than meat alone, and I felt it's something that really sets Eulji Baektan Ppyeogui apart.

The place captures that special Euljiro vibe, and I found the atmosphere charming. It's casual yet lively, so it's great for dates, of course!
