Stone jjajang with chili flakes in Milyang: Milyang Dol Jjamppong

In short

Milyang Dol Jjamppong is a Chinese restaurant on Baekmin-ro in Milyang, Gyeongnam, specializing in jjajang and jjamppong served on a hot stone plate. On the first day of a Milyang trip, on the way to a pension, the writer ordered the stone-plate jjajang with the donttang-chitang (pork and chicken soup) set and ate the sizzling noodles two ways, plain and then with chili flakes stirred in. Milyang Dol Jjamppong is an easy lunch stop on a sightseeing route that takes in Yeongnamnu and Wiyangji.

This is a review of Milyang Dol Jjamppong, where I stopped for lunch early on the day of my Milyang trip, on the way to my pension. Plenty of locals eat here, but since it's a well-known spot near Milyang's Yeongnamnu, there were lots of travelers too.

Where is Milyang Dol Jjamppong, and is there parking?

Milyang Dol Jjamppong sits right in the middle of a typical Milyang sightseeing route. It's a convenient stop before or after visiting Wiyangji, the lotus pond complex, Yeongnamnu, Arirang Grand Park, Gihoesongrim Park, Wolyeonjeong, Geumsidang, Eoreumgol (Ice Valley), Pyochonsa, or the Twin Tunnels.

There's a big parking lot too, so parking isn't a worry at all. Just park comfortably and head in.

Even on a weekday lunchtime, this Yeongnamnu-area restaurant had a lot of customers. Guess I found the right famous spot.

Next up is the stone-plate jjajang set menu. I went back and forth between stone-plate jjamppong and jjajang, and ended up ordering the jjajang with the pork-chicken soup set.

At this Milyang Chinese restaurant, pickled radish and onion get set out first.

Stone-plate jjajang stays hot to the last bite

The main dish, stone-plate jjajang, came out quickly. Since it's served on a stone plate, you can eat it warm right to the last bite.

The portion was huge too. Even for two people, it was packed with ingredients and looked like even more. It arrived sizzling and glossy, looking so appetizing. Coming out on a piping hot stone plate means it stays warm until the end, and there's the fun of scraping off the slightly scorched noodles stuck to the plate at the very end.

Just mix it well and dig in. The sauce blended so nicely with the noodles that it tasted even better. The jjajang sauce was rich but not too greasy, and it went so well with the noodles that I kept going back for more. The seafood was also super generous — great to eat alongside the noodles.

I think the charm of stone-plate jjajang is the combination of a stone plate that stays hot and a rich, savory jjajang sauce. Compared to just eating regular jjajangmyeon, serving it on a stone plate makes it more fun to look at and keeps the warmth going the whole time you eat.

Add chili flakes for a second flavor

After eating some of it plain, I added chili flakes. Starting out plain and then adding chili flakes let me enjoy a whole different flavor.

The noodles were chewy, which paired well with the sauce, and the sauce wasn't too sweet but had a rich depth that made it even tastier.

Stone jjajang with pa-kimchi on the side

The pa-kimchi (green onion kimchi) side dish. Jjajangmyeon with pa-kimchi is just the best combo.

The rich, savory flavor of the jjajang paired with the sharp, tangy taste of the pa-kimchi cuts the greasiness and really wakes up your palate. Take a bite of stone-plate jjajang, then a piece of pa-kimchi — it's a subtly addictive combo that kept me reaching for more.

What is the donttang-chitang set?

Next up is donttang-chitang. This was my first time hearing of this dish.

It felt like something between pork cutlet and sweet and sour pork. Eating just jjajangmyeon can feel a bit lacking, but adding donttang-chitang on the side made the meal much more filling.

Eating the stone-plate jjajang together with the donttang-chitang, I understood why people order it as a set. The pork and chicken had different textures, so alternating between them and the jjajang made everything taste even better.

It's a combination that pairs really well with jjajangmyeon, so I'd recommend getting the set menu. Having it alongside the noodles kept things from getting boring and made the meal more enjoyable.

A lunch that fits a Milyang sightseeing route

The outside was crispy and the meat was juicy and tender — really well made. The stone-plate jjajang and donttang-chitang set had generous portions, so it's great for a group to visit and share a variety of dishes, and I left feeling full and satisfied. It's also a good spot for family outings or hanging out with friends.

Milyang Dol Jjamppong was a great stop near Yeongnamnu during my trip. I enjoyed the stone-plate jjajang so much that I want to try the stone-plate jjamppong next time. It's a convenient restaurant to fit into your Milyang trip route — I filled up nicely and kicked off my Milyang trip from there.
