I was looking for sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) for lunch when I came across Kongbatteul in the sundubu village. It said the tofu set was ₩10,000 per person, but sundubu jjigae in Sokcho usually runs mid-teens thousand won, so I wasn't sure that price was right. Curious, I went to check it out, and Kongbatteul turned out to be an amazing value restaurant, so let me introduce it.
Location and hours of Kongbatteul Sokcho Branch
Kongbatteul Sokcho Branch is at 134 Wonamhaksapyeong-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon-do, in the Haksapyeong Kongkkot Village sundubu street. It's open daily 08:00–16:00, and the dedicated lot in front of the restaurant is free.

The Haksapyeong Kongkkot Village sundubu street in Sokcho has a cluster of sundubu jjigae restaurants, so I often go there for tofu dishes. Hanwha Resort Seorak and Sokcho Delpino Resort are nearby, so a lot of travelers stop by too.

Kongbatteul Sokcho Branch is in the sundubu village but hasn't been open long, so it's in a new building. You park in the lot out front, and the view of Ulsanbawi Rock from the parking lot is gorgeous, so I took photos.

₩10,000 per person for the tofu set — is that really the price?
Kongbatteul's tofu set comes with soybean soup, tofu tteokgalbi, sweet and sour tofu, tofu kimchi and tofu salad, all for ₩10,000 per person. Sundubu jjigae in the sundubu village tends to run a bit pricier, so I assumed I'd have to pay an extra ₩10,000 on top for the set — but reading closely, the main dish was already included. I was still second-guessing whether that price could really be right when I ordered.

Even though the restaurant is quite large, it was packed with customers. It's popular enough that people wait for a table, so if you have a big group, it's easier to book one of the rooms in advance. The interior is clean and pleasant since the building is new, which I liked.

Menu and prices at Kongbatteul Sokcho Branch
On the meal menu, only the seafood sundubu is ₩11,000 — everything else is ₩10,000. Jjamppong sundubu is usually around ₩14,000 elsewhere, but here it's ₩10,000, which is a bargain. I also liked that there's a wide range of tofu dishes — cheonggukjang, tofu kimchi jjigae, soybean pulp stew, kongguksu (cold soybean noodle soup) and more. Choosing any main dish gets you the tofu set with the rest of the tofu dishes for ₩10,000 — genuinely great value.

The tofu set with cheonggukjang and soybean pulp stew
I ordered cheonggukjang because it's too smelly to cook at home, and I was about to order sundubu jjigae until I saw the soybean pulp stew at the next table looking delicious, so I switched to that instead. The tofu set arrives with the side dishes, and it was surprising how generous a spread ₩20,000 got us.

Each person gets their own tofu tteokgalbi, and it was tasty too. With the whole set made up of tofu dishes, it was fun tasting them one by one.

The tofu kimchi with well-stir-fried kimchi was delicious too. If I'd just eaten sundubu jjigae I'd have slurped it down and left, but with the tofu set I could eat slowly and take my time.

Soybean soup and sweet and sour tofu
The sweet and sour tofu was a nice special dish, and the soybean soup — which looks like white soybean pulp — was especially delicious. It came out hot and in a generous portion, and I enjoyed it a lot.

How the soybean pulp stew tastes
I ordered the soybean pulp stew after seeing it at the next table, and it was easy on the stomach. It's mild, but the more you eat it, the more clean and delicious it gets.

In summer I especially crave cheonggukjang, but I never work up the courage to cook it at home because of the smell. I went planning to order sundubu jjigae but changed my mind to cheonggukjang, and ate well. It's a sundubu specialty restaurant, but the range of tofu-based stews meant plenty of choice, which was a real plus.

Uncooked takeout, ₩15,000 for 3 servings
Kongbatteul Sokcho Branch also sells uncooked takeout, with 3 servings for ₩15,000, so the takeout menu is great value too. You even get to take free soybean pulp home, which was nice.

Walking out after eating, I noticed it's been featured on SBS's Morning Wide and tvN's Amazing Saturday. It's such a great-value restaurant that I'll be coming back for meals again and again.

Why you should visit Kongbatteul Sokcho Branch
- A great-value restaurant where ₩10,000 gets you sundubu jjigae and a range of tofu dishes
- A wide selection of stews beyond sundubu jjigae, so there's plenty of choice
- A clean, pleasant space that's comfortable for a family meal
