Japanese teppan spot in Mullae for first-time monjayaki eaters: Jojo

In short

Jojo Mullae Branch is a Japanese teppan restaurant specialising in monjayaki and okonomiyaki in Mullae Art Village, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. A Mullae local who eats monjayaki on every trip to Japan waited about 10 minutes at 8:30pm on a weekday, then ordered the monjayaki set for two (₩39,500) with mentaiko (pollock roe) monjayaki, karai yakisoba and waterfall potato. Because staff cook on the griddle and explain how to eat monjayaki, Jojo Mullae Branch is a solid pick for first-timers.

A monjayaki specialist has opened in Mullae?

Jojo Mullae Branch (죠죠 문래점) is a monjayaki specialist that has opened in Mullae Art Village. As a Mullae resident, I can confidently recommend this new monjayaki spot in Seoul. I always ate monjayaki (a runny Japanese griddle pancake) whenever I travelled to Japan. Specialist shops are hard to find in Korea, so I was always left wondering, "When will I get to eat this again?" When I heard that a monjayaki specialist called Jojo had opened in Mullae Art Village, I ran straight over.

Jojo Mullae Branch, a good place to try monjayaki for the first time

Jojo Mullae Branch is the first monjayaki specialist in Mullae, and it's also known as the restaurant of Teppan Daejang, the chef who appeared in the recent show Culinary Class Wars 2, so word is spreading about it as a Mullae date spot!

Staff cook right on the griddle for you, so even first-timers feel at ease, and with okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancake) and yakisoba (stir-fried noodles) on the menu too, it's a great place for a tasty meal.

Table seating at Jojo Mullae Branch on a weekday evening

At 8:30pm on a weekday there were about two parties ahead of us, and after waiting around 10 minutes we were seated right away. I went on a weekday evening and there were already quite a lot of couples on dates and groups of friends. It's not just pretty outside; the inside is fairly spacious too! The ceilings are high so it doesn't feel stuffy, and the tables are spaced generously, so it was easy to talk.

Many people are eating monjayaki for the first time, so the staff kindly explained how to eat it and when it tastes best. It wasn't difficult at all, even on a first visit.

After some deliberation we ordered the monjayaki set for two (₩39,500). And of course, beer was a must!

  • Monjayaki: mentaiko (pollock roe) monjayaki / squid ink monjayaki
  • Yakisoba: Jojo yakisoba / karai (spicy) yakisoba / shio (salt) yakisoba
  • Toppings: shrimp, extra noodles and more available

We chose the mentaiko monjayaki and the karai yakisoba! Staff cooked everything on the griddle, and watching how monjayaki is made was fun too.

How is the mentaiko monjayaki made and eaten?

The main dish: mentaiko monjayaki! I'd had monjayaki in Japan, but this was my first time eating it at a specialist restaurant in Korea, so it was the dish I was most looking forward to.

Broth being poured on the griddle while cooking monjayaki

The staff stir-fry cabbage and various ingredients, then pour in broth as they go, and the cooking itself was a performance. It has big chunks of mentaiko and mochi (rice cake) in it, so it passes on looks alone!

Finished monjayaki with mentaiko and mochi

Once the mentaiko monjayaki is finished cooking, they set a 5-minute timer, and when it's up you lightly scrape the griddle with the special spatula and eat it.

Is the karai yakisoba very spicy?

The karai yakisoba, full of smoky grill flavor, also genuinely satisfied me. The noodles were springy yet chewy, and since it's stir-fried right on the griddle, a subtle smokiness came through.

I thought it would be really hot because of the name "karai" (spicy), but it was just pleasantly zesty, so it was easy to eat! The squid, meat, cabbage and other ingredients were generous too, and it was delicious.

What does the waterfall potato in the set taste like?

Even the side dish is main-dish quality! The waterfall potato that came with the Jojo Mullae Branch set was better than expected. It's smooth mashed potato topped with a soft-cooked egg. It looks pretty, and it tasted really good too!

Eaten alternately with the salty mentaiko monjayaki, the seasoning was just right and I kept reaching for more. It was the perfect combination to eat between bites of the mains.
