Daejeon gukbap restaurant with three self-serve bars: Ssangdung

In short

Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch is a gukbap (rice-and-soup) restaurant near the Wolpyeong-dong prehistoric site in Seo-gu, Daejeon that also grills pork belly. Visiting with a child, the writer ordered suyuk gukbap at 10,000 won, modeum gukbap at 10,000 won and native sundae (Korean blood sausage), then helped themselves to unlimited fried eggs, kimchi pancake, sundae, liver and lung from the self-serve bar. Even a single bowl of gukbap gives you full run of the self-serve bars, which makes Ssangdung strong value for the price.

On days with a big temperature swing, or when you're craving a hearty meaty gukbap, the combo of deeply simmered broth and tender suyuk (boiled pork) always comes to mind. Being able to eat both gukbap and pork belly in one visit made it even more satisfying 👍 Just as I'd heard, the clean flavor and generous portions won me over — let's get into this tasty review of Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap!

1. What you can refill for free

The first thing that catches your eye is definitely the unlimited refills. Order just one bowl of gukbap and you can enjoy all the sundae, liver, lungs, kimchi pancake and somyeon noodles you want. And the kimchi is homemade fresh every day — for 4,200 days straight — also unlimited. Isn't that amazing? 😮

The interior is neatly kept, and the tables are spaced generously! It's a comfortable atmosphere for solo diners as well as groups of office workers nearby. The seating mix includes 4-person and 8-person tables in the main hall.

Inside, there's a private room area separated by partitions, perfect for group gatherings or work dinners without any outside disturbance. There's way more space tucked away than what you'd guess from the entrance.

Tablet ordering device installed at a table

Each table has a tablet ordering device installed, so you can browse the menu at your own pace and order easily. I came just thinking gukbap, but the variety of the menu surprised me all over again haha.

📋 The Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap menu board. Suyuk gukbap, sundae gukbap, spicy gukbap, native sundae, suyuk bossam, spicy sul-guk, mixed suyuk-sundae platter, and plain suyuk! Plus fresh pork belly, kkodeulsal (crispy pork belly), and thin-sliced pork belly. Being able to eat gukbap and grilled meat in one place is such a novel idea.

Three self-serve bars in one restaurant

Self-serve bar area set up on one side of the restaurant

The self-serve bar zone, packed with care and perks. The real charm of Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch, a well-loved Wolpyeong-dong gukbap spot, is this thoughtfully arranged self-bar area. There are three self-serve bars in total!!!

1️⃣ The gukbap self-serve corner

Crunchy seokbakji (radish kimchi) that pairs perfectly with gukbap, geotjeori (fresh cabbage kimchi) made with domestic cabbage, and homemade chives kimchi are all generously laid out. Plus unlimited somyeon noodle refills 🤤 You can freely help yourself to somyeon noodles for the broth, along with chives, chili peppers, onions and ssamjang (dipping sauce), no need to be shy.

2️⃣ The pork belly self-serve corner (after 5pm)

Various wrap vegetables and grilling ingredients. Fresh lettuce, perilla leaves, and cabbage for wraps were all there, along with grilling-ready rice cake strips, whole garlic, radish salad, scallion strips, and minari (water celery). Special sauce for the scallion strips and ssamjang and other sauces that bring out the meat's flavor were all fully stocked.

A special perk for anyone ordering pork belly 🍜 Order 2+ servings and get free Han River ramyeon.

3️⃣ The unlimited refill zone

One fried egg per person, plus kimchi pancake and sundae. The self-bar has a burner and frying pan set up, so you can make your fried egg soft or well-done depending on your taste (one free egg per person!). Kimchi pancake, sundae, liver, and lungs are all completely free too. ❤️

A freshly fried egg looks so good, right? Fried soft-yolk and golden, it warms up your stomach before diving into the gukbap. Made with homemade kimchi, the pancake had a crisp, spicy kick that paired with the gukbap better than expected.

Table set with gukbap and unlimited sundae

That authentic vibe, pure and strong. The happiness of gukbap with unlimited sundae. This is what ₩10,000 happiness looks like!

Ordering modeum gukbap, suyuk gukbap and native sundae

A generous plate of native sundae

The first thing that caught my eye was the generously and neatly plated ✅native sundae! Chewy and savory sundae, definitely try it 🙏 Unlike regular glass-noodle sundae, the filling is packed with vegetables and meat, so it tasted clean and deeply flavorful with every bite.

Table set with native sundae and basic side dishes

We only ordered gukbap and native sundae, but the table was set so full it looked like it might buckle! The basic side dishes — geotjeori kimchi, kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi), seasoned chives, salted shrimp, and chili peppers with onions — were all neatly arranged. The lifeblood of a gukbap restaurant is the kimchi, and this perfectly spicy, crunchy geotjeori paired wonderfully with the gukbap 👍

✅Suyuk gukbap, ₩10,000. Just one lift with the spoon, and you get a generous, thick pile of thin, tender suyuk (boiled pork). The clear, deep broth with no gamy smell soaked well into the meat, making it very clean and mild-tasting.

Suyuk gukbap topped with sliced boiled pork

✅Modeum gukbap, ₩10,000. My husband's modeum gukbap came loaded with a variety of ingredients like head meat, gopchang (intestines), and sundae. Perfect for enjoying the chewy texture and savory broth all at once.

Modeum gukbap with head meat and gopchang

The table was completely full with our three ordered dishes plus the food we brought over from the self-bar. Something delicious next to something else delicious~~

Table full of two gukbap bowls and self-bar dishes

Modeum gukbap with three pieces of sundae plus head meat and gopchang, all generously packed with a variety of textures.

Try adding a generous scoop of seasoned chives into the hot broth and letting it wilt before eating! It comes with a light seasoning as is, but you can add salted shrimp or dadaegi (seasoned chili paste) to taste for a spicier, richer broth. When they saw we came with a kid, they even thoughtfully asked whether to add the spicy sauce or serve it separately when ordering!

Cross-section of native sundae packed with filling

With the filling packed full of vegetables and meat, each bite gets more clean and deeply flavorful — totally addictive. I officially recognize this as a great sundae restaurant 👍 It's so good it disappears in no time.

Complimentary sundae, liver, and lungs

Complimentary sundae, liver, and lungs 👏👏👏 Thanks to the self-bar corner, which you can use even if you only order gukbap, we got to cleanly pair in liver and lungs too. Such generous hospitality, really touched by it. Dip it lightly in salt or salted shrimp and the savory flavor spreads through your mouth with no gamy taste at all. The chewy sticky-rice sundae is exactly my style 😋

The suyuk portion is huge. You might even end up with meat left over by the end.

Rice mixed into suyuk gukbap with dadaegi stirred in

First taste the pale, clear broth, then stir in some dadaegi, add rice with the chives brought from the self-bar, and top it with the crunchy seokbakji or chive kimchi — that's the perfect combo! Slurp it right down haha.

Be sure to grab the chive kimchi and radish salad prepared at the self-bar! It paired so well with the gukbap, honestly the best.

Mix in rice and top it with seokbakji for the perfect combo! I just can't stop eating.

Is Ssangdung worth a visit? The verdict

A deep, clean gukbap flavor as the baseline! Add the generous native sundae plus complimentary fried eggs, kimchi pancake, and sundae/organs, and this was one of the best-value, best-tasting meals I've had. If you're looking for a comforting bowl of gukbap near the Wolpyeong-dong prehistoric site, I recommend Ssangdung Suyuk Gukbap Wolpyeong Seonsa Branch!
