Suwon kalguksu restaurant: basin-sized kal-nakji for two, Daseon
In short
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is an old-school kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) and suyuk (boiled pork) restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro near Suwon Station. Two women ordered the Daseon kal-nakji (noodles with octopus, made with extra broth), which arrived in a basin-sized bowl packed with noodles and seafood, plus a suyuk plate that was plenty for two, starting with barley rice mixed with radish salad and gochujang. Daseon Kalguksu was full at mealtime with people waiting outside, and the portions made it worth the queue.

Today I'm posting about [Daseon Kalguksu], a place I really want to recommend as a Suwon Station spot to eat.

If you're near Suwon Station looking for kalguksu or suyuk, this place is worth a visit. The moment we walked in, we got that old-school vibe, which somehow made the food feel even more promising. Especially suyuk and kalguksu — they just taste better in a place with this atmosphere, don't they haha.

What two women ordered at Daseon Kalguksu: kal-nakji and a suyuk plate
Daseon Kalguksu's menu ranges from various kalguksu to mandu (dumplings) and bossam (boiled pork wraps), so it worked well for a proper meal. There was also a jumak set menu listed on the side, which looked good for a casual drink with snacks in the evening.
There were two of us, so we worried the portions might be too much, but we ended up ordering the Daseon kal-nakji (with extra broth) and the suyuk plate! Looking at the suyuk options, the set meal version with suyuk was a bit cheaper — good for when you want a little suyuk alongside a meal. But we wanted to really dig into the suyuk together, so we went with the plate version haha.

Wet wipes were part of the basic table setting, which was convenient even before the food arrived.

Barley rice, radish salad and kimchi: the side dishes at Daseon Kalguksu
While we waited, Daseon Kalguksu brought out barley rice first! At places like this, when the barley rice or basic side dishes are good, it just makes me happy haha.
I mixed radish salad into the barley rice and added a little gochujang. Wow... it seemed like such a simple thing but it was so good. The crunchy radish salad with gochujang really woke up my appetite! These days there are so many intense, flashy foods around, but I really think a place that nails the basics is a true find. I ate through the barley rice like an appetizer haha.

The kimchi was also the kimjang (winter-batch) style I love, like it was made in-house, and it was too good. It paired perfectly with the kalguksu and suyuk. The salted shrimp had a nice briny kick too, great for dipping the suyuk 👍🏻

Is the suyuk plate at Daseon Kalguksu enough for two?
Daseon Kalguksu's suyuk plate was plenty for two women. It was more than we expected, honestly haha. There was chives laid underneath so you could eat them together with the pork.
I like eating suyuk with sides like chives or radish salad rather than plain, and putting a piece of pork on the chives with radish salad on top was absolutely fantastic, tears haha. The clean flavor of the meat with the tangy, crunchy radish salad kept me reaching for more.
Dipping it in salted shrimp on top of that brings out even more savory depth!

How big is the basin-sized Daseon kal-nakji with extra broth?
While we were still eating suyuk, the main dish, Daseon kal-nakji, showed up. The bowl size alone is insane haha. It was seriously basin-sized, and when we first saw it we laughed, wondering if the two of us could really finish it. The price isn't heavy either, and with such a generous portion, it somehow made us feel generous too... 🥹

There was plenty of kalguksu noodles, and the broth was packed with seafood and octopus — really hearty. We came in on empty stomachs that day and basically inhaled it as soon as it arrived haha, but no matter how much we ate, the noodles didn't seem to shrink.
The broth was refreshing too — after eating suyuk, one spoonful of the kalguksu broth just kept pulling the spoon back in. With octopus and seafood mixed in, it felt more generous than a regular kalguksu. Even with the suyuk on top of it, we still walked out completely full and satisfied.

Full house and a wait outside: is Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch worth it?
Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch was almost fully packed while we were eating, and by the time we left, there were people waiting outside too. If you're near Suwon Station looking for kalguksu or suyuk, I get why so many people come here.
Clean, stylish restaurants are great these days, but sometimes a hearty meal at a place with this much old-school charm hits just right. If you're looking for a filling, satisfying meal near Suwon Station, this one's worth keeping in mind. 😊 Do you have your own favorite kalguksu spot? If so, let me know in the comments haha.
