Daechi-dong eel rice bowl lunch before a hospital visit: Manmok
In short
Manmok is a Japanese eel rice bowl restaurant in Daechi-dong, Gangnam, Seoul, near Seolleung Station Exit 2, that cooks Gochang freshwater eel Kanto-style: grilled, steamed, then grilled again over charcoal. I ordered the whole eel rice bowl at Manmok for a filling lunch before a hospital appointment; the eel was tender and not too oily, and a sprinkle of sancho pepper kept every bite clean to the end. Manmok is a good fit for anyone who wants a quiet lunch of light, clean-tasting eel rice bowl.

Why an eel rice bowl lunch in Daechi-dong before a hospital visit?
Manmok is an eel rice bowl restaurant on Seolleung-ro 82-gil in Daechi-dong, and I went there wanting a hearty lunch before heading to a hospital appointment. I'd been craving eel rice bowl for a while, and while searching for a place I ended up here!
Manmok uses Gochang freshwater eel, and I was curious because they use a Kanto-style method — grilling it once, steaming it, then grilling it again over charcoal. I enjoyed it so much I want to introduce it to you right away!

Manmok exterior and interior: what is the atmosphere like?

From the exterior, Manmok already had an upscale, calm atmosphere — closer to a refined Japanese restaurant. Rather than being flashy or eye-catching, it felt tidy and composed, which made it comfortable. It seemed like a good fit for anyone looking for a lunch spot in Daechi-dong.

The calm mood from the exterior carries naturally into Manmok's interior. The wood-heavy interior combined with soft lighting gave it a warm yet upscale feel. Rather than a bright, busy restaurant, it's a space where you can talk quietly while eating, so it works well for lunch, but also seems like a good spot for a date, an anniversary, or a team dinner.
Manmok lunch menu: half, whole or one-and-a-half eel rice bowl

Manmok's lunch menu offers eel rice bowl in half, whole, or one-and-a-half eel portions, and we ordered the whole eel rice bowl. Manmok specializes in eel rice bowl, and I liked that they use only Gochang freshwater eel, which is famous for the quality of its eel.

When I lifted the lid, the eel sitting appetizingly on top of the rice caught my eye first — the charcoal-grilled eel had that classic glossy, appetizing look. Seeing the eel glisten so much, I worried the sauce might be too strong or sweet, but once I actually tasted it, it wasn't as heavy as I expected.

Side dishes served with Manmok's eel rice bowl
- Salad
- Pickled radish
- Wasabi
- Pickled ginger
- Pickled sancho berries
- Shrimp chawanmushi (steamed egg custard)
- Matsutake mushroom soup

There's sancho pepper powder next to the menu on the table, so you can sprinkle extra on the eel to your taste.

How does Manmok's Kanto-style eel rice bowl taste?
The eel meat in Manmok's eel rice bowl was incredibly tender. I think it's because of the Kanto-style method — grilled once, steamed, then grilled again over charcoal — the outside carried the flavor of grilled eel while the inside melted softly.
The eel's characteristic greasiness also wasn't as strong as I expected.

Sancho pepper for when the eel starts to feel rich
Manmok has a good variety of side dishes, so there were many ways to enjoy the meal. With eel, the first few bites are usually delicious but it can get a bit heavy toward the end — Manmok's eel rice bowl was relatively clean and light in comparison.
When I started feeling like it was getting a bit rich, dipping it in sancho pepper powder cut through the richness nicely. Eating the rice and eel together made for a filling meal, and the flavor of the eel itself combined with the sauce kept me reaching for more bite after bite haha. Tasting it, I understood why Manmok emphasizes a cooking method that highlights the eel's texture and clean flavor. A certified Gangnam eel rice bowl spot!!
Verdict: a filling but light lunch before a hospital appointment
Whenever I go to the hospital, the whole process from getting there to the appointment takes quite a while, so I try to make sure I eat well beforehand. I chose Manmok's eel rice bowl to eat something filling before that, and I was really glad I did.
After finishing the whole bowl, I felt quite full but not overly greasy or heavy in the stomach. The atmosphere of the space stuck with me as much as the food. Manmok has a clear identity using Gochang freshwater eel prepared Kanto-style, and eating it, the eel was genuinely soft and clean-tasting.
Manmok's quiet, calm atmosphere suits anyone looking for a comfortable place to eat and talk rather than a crowded restaurant. If you're looking for a proper Gangnam eel rice bowl for lunch in Daechi-dong, I highly recommend stopping by Manmok :)
