Bakery café in Eonyang, Ulsan on a summer drive: MUG lemon smoothie
In short
MUG (카페 먹) is a mountain bakery café on Hyangsandagae-ro in Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju, Ulsan, near Eonyang. On a hot August weekday afternoon drive, the writer tried MUG's lemon smoothie, avocado coffee smoothie, salt bread, olive cheese ciabatta, MUG pie and chestnut cheesecake, but the cinnamon roll was sold out. With its charred-wood exterior, mountain views and large free parking lot, MUG makes a great Eonyang date spot.

Hi, this is Ppyu Matgil! 🙌 Today I'm introducing MUG (카페 먹, MUG BAKERY CAFE), a bakery café in Eonyang, Ulsan with a story unlike any other. Tucked deep in the mountains, this café sits at the end of a forest path, a quiet place that greets you shoulder to shoulder with nature once you step away from the city. I went on a hot August day, kind of as a summer drive, and it's a great Eonyang, Ulsan bakery café for an Ulsan date 🌿
Where is MUG in Eonyang, and what are the hours and parking?
- 📍 90 Hyangsandagae-ro, Sangbuk-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan, South Korea
- ⏰ Daily 10:00 - 20:00 (last order 19:30)
- 🅿️ Large dedicated parking lot in front of the café (free)
- ✔️ Good for visiting since there are many nearby attractions like Amethyst Cave World (12 min by car), Ganwoljae (29 min by car), and Taehwagang National Garden (24 min by car)
The story behind MUG's charred-wood exterior
Walking into MUG, the Eonyang, Ulsan bakery café, the first thing you notice is the dark, blackened wood.

It's called 'charred wood' (탄화목), and it's not just decorative material. It was a deliberate choice to remember the pain of losing an entire fortune's worth of landscaping trees, cultivated for over 20 years, to a wildfire in 2013. Like sowing seeds again in a burned forest, rather than hiding that scar, the space faces it head-on and weaves it into the brand itself.
Knowing the story of MUG — a space of recovery blooming out of loss, growing slowly and sturdily like a single tree — made every corner feel different. The first thing I loved on arrival was the huge parking lot. A spacious, pleasant parking area welcomes you, and the black café building is striking. From far away it just looks like a black café, but as you get closer to go in, you can see that sad story well expressed on the surface.

One side of the café has a glass wall and an outdoor water feature that mirrors the sky and greenery, so I took a photo right away. 📸
MUG's interior atmosphere and mountain-view seats
Once you open the door, the first thing you see is an exhibition space for emerging artists, and going in further reveals an interior with a huge ceiling height.
With exposed concrete it has a raw, cool feel, but the floors and walls have a wood-toned warmth too, so both qualities coexist.

Water flows through a media art installation in the middle of the café, which made it feel even cooler.

I arrived on a weekday afternoon, and quite a lot of seats inside were already taken, and unfortunately most of the breads were sold out too. 😭

After ordering, I took a seat with a great view of the mountains. The interior's overwhelming scale is almost humbling, and the mountain view stretching out in front was so, so good. ⛰️
I also stopped by the restroom — it's separated by gender and the wood-tone interior was clean.
The outdoor vine tunnel and dirt path
Various plants like loofah gourds and bottle gourds grow in the vine tunnel, which looked great for kids to explore.

The dirt path and lawn nearby connect to a walking trail, making this a perfect spot to extend an Eonyang date with a stroll too 🐾

How was the MUG lemon smoothie, avocado coffee smoothie and bread?
What we ordered 👇 🍋 MUG Lemon Smoothie, 🥑 Avocado Coffee Smoothie, 🥐 Salt Bread, 🫒 Olive Cheese Ciabatta, 🥧 MUG Pie, 🌰 Chestnut Cheesecake (I went wanting the cinnamon roll, but sadly it was sold out 😢 I'll definitely have to try it next time!)
🍋 MUG Lemon Smoothie — one of MUG's signature drinks! It's black in color but tastes like tangy, sweet lemonade, which was a bit of a mind-bender. 😕 The refreshing, cool lemon aroma filled my mouth, perfect for drinking on a hot day.
🥑 Avocado Coffee Smoothie — the combination of avocado and coffee felt unfamiliar, but the rich, fresh avocado was blended smooth, and its nutty flavor paired well with the nutty coffee. Nice to drink.
🥐 Salt Bread — the salt bread at this Eonyang, Ulsan bakery café is crispy outside, moist inside, and full of buttery aroma.
🫒 Olive Cheese Ciabatta — the distinctive olive flavor, aroma and texture were so good, and the ciabatta with olive and cheese together was salty and nutty, perfect with coffee.
🥧 MUG Pie — like the charred-wood brand concept, the MUG pie is dark in color and had such a great crispy texture. 👍

🌰 Chestnut Cheesecake — I picked this one, and it was the tastiest. 😁 Honey-preserved chestnuts paired so well with the thick, dense cheesecake.
