Gwangju Korean pub for after-work dinner and drinks: Misikga Imokase

In short

Misikga Imokase Sangmu Main Branch is an imokase-style Korean pub in an alley near Sangmu Station in Sangmu, Seo-gu, Gwangju. After work, the writer and a close younger friend had the 30,000-won-per-person imokase, and about 17 dishes kept coming, from makhoe (sliced raw fish), braised butterfish, webfoot octopus and hongeo samhap (fermented skate with pork and kimchi) to fried rice, ramyeon, fruit, tteok (rice cake) and patbingsu (red bean shaved ice), so no extra orders felt necessary. Misikga Imokase is a dinner-and-drinks spot where the first and second rounds can both happen at one table.

How do you get to Misikga Imokase Sangmu Main Branch? What about parking?

Misikga Imokase Sangmu Main Branch (미식가 이모카세 상무본점) is in an alley, just keep walking straight from Sangmu Station Exit 5. There is no dedicated parking lot, so you will need to park in the alley.

Ever since Culinary Class Wars (흑백요리사) aired, imokase menus have become a trend, right? I'd been wanting to try imokase too, so this time I got to have dinner at Misikga Imokase in Sangmu with a close younger friend, haha.

Seating and the atmosphere of the group annex at Misikga Imokase

Misikga Imokase in Sangmu has veranda tables with an outdoor feel, and there are more tables on both sides of the main building. The annex is a great space to book for group meals or company dinners.

It had a lively, boisterous drinking-night mood, with company dinners, friends and family meals all mixed together. The annex has 8 seats at the front, and the middle section was full of a group meal so I couldn't take photos there. At the very back there's a 20-seat area, so keep that in mind~^^

How much is Misikga Imokase, and do you need extra dishes?

The imokase menu at Misikga is ₩30,000 per person, and if it's set for just 2 people, it's ₩35,000 per person. For extras, you can add bossam (boiled pork wraps), hongeo (fermented skate), raw fish, yukjeon (beef pancakes) or webfoot octopus for ₩10,000 each.

We had planned to eat the imokase and then add whichever dishes we liked, but after eating an imokase made up of such generous, solid dishes, we didn't feel any need to order more~~

An after-work imokase spread: what dishes came out?

The first table at Misikga Imokase came with dotorimuk (acorn jelly), japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), makhoe sprinkled with soybean powder, and yukhoe (beef tartare). The acorn jelly was delicious, the japchae was a treat I hadn't seen in a while, and the makhoe came with chojang (sweet chili vinegar sauce) and a nutty sprinkle of soybean powder, such a nice detail, heh. The yukhoe was pretty tasty too, and my friend said she was feasting happily for the first time in ages, which made us laugh. In a comfortable, pleasant atmosphere, we talked and talked.

Many side dishes and drinking snacks spread across the imokase table

I was hungry after work, and as the saying goes, even Mount Kumgang is better after a meal, so we decided to fill our stomachs with dinner first and keep chatting, haha. I was going to eat more of the thick makhoe I love, but then the braised butterfish and savory webfoot octopus came out and stole my attention! With about 17 dishes coming out one after another, one delicious thing after another just keeps arriving, hahahahahahahaha

Whether you drink soju or beer, everything goes well with the food and slides down easily. You can eat a lot, so it's a good idea to eat lightly before you come for imokase!!

My friend said the braised butterfish was delicious, yum yum, and the braised radish was good too, right? Even the spicy, flavorful seasoned webfoot octopus left us satisfied.

Hongeo samhap, a challenge for someone who doesn't eat hongeo

Misikga Imokase serves hongeo samhap too (fermented skate, boiled pork and aged kimchi eaten together). I don't normally eat hongeo, but that day I took on the challenge by wrapping the skate, pork and aged kimchi together in a ssam~^^

Boiled pork, mustard leaf kimchi and lettuce wraps

Pork wrapped in lettuce was tasty and the mustard leaf kimchi (gat kimchi) was charming too. Wrapping boiled pork in cool aged kimchi feels so refreshing, haha. Having yukjeon with a cool, soft pollack soup (hwangtae-guk) felt like an instant hangover cure. Imokase brings out a varied mix that works as both a meal and drinking snacks, so it was great for clinking glasses.

Fried rice, ramyeon and dessert: why we didn't need a second round

At Misikga Imokase, the finish includes fried rice and ramyeon, then fruit, tteok (rice cake) and bingsu (shaved ice dessert) for dessert. Frying rice with a fried egg and the leftover webfoot octopus sauce is truly fantastic, absolutely superb.

I was really satisfied eating such a generous table, and if you haven't experienced imokase, give it a try. It was just so perfect as drinking food, and the restaurant has the whole package, including a mood where the drinks go down smoothly!!! I think it would be good to come back for another drinking night. The food was so good that there seemed to be a lot of regulars too.

With fruit, soft and moist tteok, and a closing bingsu all coming as dessert, this Misikga Imokase dinner in Sangmu covered both the first and second rounds, no need to go anywhere else! haha
