Mokpo Korean restaurant for beef tail soup: Mujinjang Sik-yuk Gomtang
In short
Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang is a Korean restaurant near Pyeonghwa Square in Mokpo, Gwangju. On a late lunch visit, I tried its clean, deeply flavored broth, tender beef tail meat, and bright tangy sauce. A comforting, filling meal worth considering.

Mujinjang Sik-yuk Kkori Gomtang (무진장 식육꼬리곰탕)

A gomtang spot for breakfast or lunch near Pyeonghwa Square
The area around Pyeonghwa Square has lots of restaurants and cafés, even by Mokpo standards, so it is a nice place to look for a meal while traveling! There are plenty of atmospheric restaurants at dinner, but I was actually looking for a Mokpo restaurant that would be good for lunch or breakfast. My boyfriend loves gukbap (rice soup), so we headed to Mujinjang Korean Beef Tail Gomtang for our first meal!

They say this place has been going for three generations since 1976. They also recently moved to a new location!

They sell soju and beer for ₩3,000.
Ordering special Korean beef tail gomtang and suyuk soup
Menu

We ordered one special Korean beef tail gomtang, one Korean beef suyuk soup, and drinks!

Mujinjang Korean Beef Tail Gomtang, a popular spot near Mokpo’s Pyeonghwa Square, uses only Korean beef!!

We went around 2 p.m. for a late lunch, so the other diners had cleared out and it was nice and quiet haha.

Salt and pepper are self-serve. For side dishes, just ask the owner!
Clean broth and tender Korean beef tail

Special Korean beef tail gomtang
The first thing I tasted, of course, was the broth. I think the broth is the most important part of gomtang (Korean beef soup), and I loved that this one was clean and deep rather than intensely salty or heavily seasoned. I first tasted the broth as it was, then added little bits of salt and pepper to adjust it to my taste.

Tail gomtang feels much more filling when you eat it with the meat rather than just sipping the broth, right? The Korean beef tail meat had such a tender texture and went beautifully with the warm broth! I lightly mixed the rice into the soup and had it with a piece of meat, and it made for a pretty substantial meal even without many side dishes. I think the charm of food like this is not flashy flavor, but flavor that makes you want to keep eating comfortably.

And the meat was even tastier dipped in the bright, tangy sauce that came with it!!

Side dishes with the gomtang
This time, let’s try it with the side dishes that came along!

The seasoned garlic chives had a slight fish-sauce flavor and a nice salty edge, so they went really well with the gomtang haha.

Korean beef suyuk soup
The Korean beef suyuk soup had a broth similar to the tail gomtang, and it came with the same thin wheat noodles, too~

They are also giving out a complimentary drink through a receipt-review event, so give it a try~~

As you would expect from a long-running Mokpo restaurant, lots of celebrities visited in the past, though I heard they did not manage to get their autographs.
A filling, comforting meal for a trip
The Korean beef tail gomtang I had this time really delivered the strengths of gomtang overall: clean broth, tender meat, and a filling meal. Special foods are great in Mokpo, too, but if you are looking for a comfortable meal while traveling, gomtang seems well worth choosing at least once. In particular, if you are searching for a place around Mokpo’s Pyeonghwa Square for lunch or dinner, I think this kind of gomtang restaurant is worth adding to your list~ After a bowl of Korean beef tail gomtang, I was satisfyingly full, so the dessert afterward tasted even better haha.
