This weekend I treated myself and went to an Ansan eel spot that office workers keep raving about for its value and quality: Songnim Bok Jangeo Wolpi Branch, in Wolpi-dong, Sangnok-gu, Ansan.
Let me be totally honest up front: this place completely redrew my map of favorite restaurants. It was so good that I spent the whole meal furrowing my brow in genuine awe and doing nothing but exclaiming.

How much is the all-you-can-eat eel at Songnim Bok Jangeo Wolpi Branch?

In these days of high prices, getting properly plump freshwater eel as an all-you-can-eat for the ₩20,000 range per person is a huge plus, right? Honestly, before visiting I worried that "unlimited" might mean lower quality or skimpy eel.
But what do you know, Songnim Bok Jangeo is reportedly directly linked to a No. 8 wholesale broker partner and a freshwater eel farming fisheries cooperative. Maybe that's why the freshness and quality were better than I ever imagined.

Is Songnim Bok Jangeo good for company dinners and family meals in Wolpi-dong?
The moment I walked in, the spacious, pleasant interior caught my eye. It's stylish, clean and well kept, so it's a perfectly good spot for a company dinner with a drink after work, and equally fine as a Wolpi-dong family meal spot when you bring your parents for some weekend nourishment.
The tables are also spaced generously, so you can chat comfortably with your group and focus on the food without worrying about the people around you. I really liked that.

What side dishes come with the 3,000 won table setting fee?
Once you sit down and order, the basic table setting arrives neatly laid out. Time for the real eel mukbang (eating show)! This is where I started being moved by the quality.

The ₩3,000 per person setting fee didn't feel like a waste at all, because the table fills up with fresh side dishes that pair perfectly with eel. It starts with sharp shredded ginger, then tangy myeongi namul (pickled wild garlic leaves), crunchy rinsed aged kimchi, seasoned chives, and a special teriyaki sauce that goes down so easily. A flawless lineup. When you run out of anything, you can help yourself at the tidy self-bar without feeling awkward, which was very convenient.

How does the charcoal-grilled freshwater eel taste?
The eel arrives plump and glowing a milky white, and the moment it hits the heated charcoal there's a delicious sizzle and a nutty aroma that fills the whole restaurant. You grill the skin side first until crisp without burning, then flip it and brown the flesh side.
The heat is strong, so the eel cooks quickly, crispy outside and moist inside. The bokbunja (Korean black raspberry wine) is complimentary!

We grilled pork belly and duck neck alongside the eel, and they were so rich and tasty! I sent a well-cooked, thick piece of eel straight into my mouth without any sauce first. The tender flesh melted away without even needing a chew.
There was absolutely zero muddy or gamey smell typical of freshwater eel. With every bite, the deep, nutty flavor of the eel and its juices burst out, and it was just pure emotion. "This is so good, seriously!" never stopped coming out of my mouth.

What's the best way to eat all-you-can-eat eel?
The eel is so good on its own that it's already a perfect score plain, but let me share my own favorite combos that blast away a whole week of work stress in one go!

The classic combo: special sauce and shredded ginger
Dip a generous pinch of shredded ginger in the sweet-salty special eel sauce, set it on a piece of grilled eel, and pop it in your mouth in one bite. The sharp, refreshing ginger cuts the eel's slight richness, so you never get sick of it and just keep going.

A tangy, clean combo: myeongi namul (pickled wild garlic) and pickled radish wraps
Roll well-grilled eel up in tangy myeongi namul or mussam (thin pickled radish wraps). The crunchy texture and sour savoriness make your mouth feel refreshed.

An after-work wrap: lettuce and perilla leaves with beer
Layer fresh lettuce and fragrant perilla leaves, add two thick pieces of eel, then seasoned chives, raw garlic and ssamjang (dipping paste), and make one big wrap. Follow it with a cold beer and this is heaven. Being able to refill this high-quality eel without worrying about the price made me worry whether the owner makes any profit at all.

What's at the Songnim Bok Jangeo Wolpi Branch self-bar?
At the self-bar you can take not just eel but also pork belly and duck neck, all unlimited, along with wrap greens.

I must have rice whenever I eat meat!

Even the rice and soup are unlimited at the self-bar!

Is Songnim Bok Jangeo Wolpi Branch worth a return visit?
For office workers worn out by stress and fatigue, I think nothing is a better stamina food than eel, and Songnim Bok Jangeo Wolpi Branch took the price burden away entirely while satisfying me on taste, freshness and a pleasant restaurant. It was a top-tier Ansan restaurant.
Honestly, if it were near my office or my house, I'd want to come every single day of the week; it hit my taste buds that hard. I'm definitely booking it for an upcoming family event or my parents' birthday so we can all come for some nourishment together. If you're looking for a no-fail, truly good restaurant near Wolpi-dong or a best-value stamina food specialist, don't hesitate and go.
