Couple's eel buffet in Saesol-dong for ₩65,800: Songrim Bok Jangeo

Songrim Bok Jangeo Freshwater Eel All-You-Can-Eat Saesol Direct Branch is an all-you-can-eat freshwater eel restaurant in Saesol-dong (Songsan Green City), Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, charging ₩29,900 per adult plus a ₩3,000 table fee, or ₩32,900 per person. The writer and her husband spent 2 hours grilling eel, pork belly and chicken neck over charcoal, and found the eel, which the restaurant says is prepared every morning, thick and mild. For couples and families who want plenty of eel without worrying about the bill, Songrim Bok Jangeo Saesol Direct Branch is worth a visit at least once.

Yangju galbi restaurant, Chobok lunch for a big family: Manpo Galbi

Manpo Galbi Yangju Main Branch is a charcoal-grilled galbi restaurant on Songnang-ro in Yangju, Gyeonggi. On Chobok, the first of summer's three hottest days, the writer's parents and her younger sibling's family arrived in three cars for the ₩19,000 handmade galbi lunch special set. The yukhoe (beef tartare) and yukjeon (pan-fried beef) side dishes and tender pork galbi pleased everyone from the kids to the grandparents. Remember that Manpo Galbi's free naengmyeon (cold noodles) must be ordered separately at the kiosk; otherwise it is an easy recommendation for family gatherings.

Opo sundae soup spot: spicy bowls and takeout at Gyeongseong Sundaeguk

Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk Opo Maesan (옛날경성순대국 오포매산점) is a sundae gukbap (Korean blood sausage soup with rice) restaurant on Hoean-daero in Maesan-dong, Opo-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi, a branch of the Gyeongseong Sundaeguk chain whose original shop is in a Yongin market. On a Sunday evening the writer, her husband and her sister ate the regular and spicy sundae soup and took 2 servings of uncooked sundae soup home for the kids, enjoying the rich broth with no gamey smell, the generous meat and the tangy kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi). With a large car park, tablet ordering and a self-serve bar, Yetnal Gyeongseong Sundaeguk is an easy family meal out in Opo.

Gonjiam café near Team Up Campus, ₩500 back on refills: La Cuesta

La Cuesta Gwangju is a large two-story bakery café with forest views in Gonjiam-eup, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. While her son had a soccer class at Gonjiam Team Up Campus, the writer stopped by with another mom for the La Cuesta latte, an Americano, a mont blanc and an egg tart, enjoyed the panoramic forest view from the second floor, and noticed that La Cuesta gives ₩500 back on Americano refills and offers a weekday duo brunch set. Verdict: La Cuesta Gwangju is a relaxed place to pass the waiting time near Team Up Campus or Hwadam Botanic Garden.

Gwangju pork galbi lunch set, cold noodles vs stew: Jeongwon Galbi

Jeongwon Galbi Gyeonggi Gwangju Branch (정원갈비 경기광주점) is a pork galbi restaurant on Gyeongancheon-ro in Gwangju, Gyeonggi. On a weekday lunch, the writer and her husband ordered the ₩16,900-per-person domestic pork galbi lunch set. One chose naengmyeon (cold noodles) and the other chose doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew) with rice, so they tried both options. The pork galbi at Jeongwon Galbi was tender, the marinade wasn't overly sweet, and partitions at every table made it a quiet, filling lunch.

Namhansanseong forest-view café for hot Americano in early autumn: Sum

Sum (카페 숨) is a large forest-view bakery café in Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi. On a clear early autumn day, the writer looked around Sum's floor-to-ceiling forest windows and white-parasol outdoor terrace, then enjoyed a fresh cream mocha bun and a hot Americano by the window. With its spacious free parking lot, Sum is a good café for a seasonal break on a Namhansanseong drive.

Burger spot in Gyeongpo, Gangneung with huge squid burgers: Burger Bar

Burger Bar is a handmade burger restaurant on Haean-ro in Gangneung, right in front of Sageunjin Beach. On a Gangneung trip, the Jumunjin squid burger and the Daegwallyeong songgo mushroom burger were shared for lunch, and both were so big they were hard to hold by hand; either one alone was filling. For a hearty handmade burger with a view of the sea, Burger Bar is a solid pick.

Late-dinner Korean restaurant in Sokcho: pollack soup at Daecheongmaru

Daecheongmaru (대청마루) is a Korean restaurant in a red-clay house in Haksapyeong Sundubu Village, Nohak-dong, Sokcho, serving sundubu (soft tofu stew) and dried pollack dishes. A couple who reached Sokcho around 8pm had the dried pollack hangover soup and the spicy sundubu at Daecheongmaru, and what stayed with them was the 9 standard banchan (side dishes) and the rich, smooth broth of the pollack soup. If you arrive in Sokcho late and want a filling dinner, Daecheongmaru's dried pollack hangover soup is a solid choice.

After an overnight stay in Gangneung, the writer and her husband stopped at Baegya Coffee before lunch for oksigi (sweet corn) ice cream, a butterscotch shot latte and a blueberry cream cheese pie while watching the autumn sea through floor-to-ceiling windows, then walked the reed field and observatory at Sageunjin Beach. With easy parking and roomy seating, Baegya Coffee is a café she wants to revisit on her next Gangneung trip.

Gangneung sand cookie café: Chuseok picks by recipient, Gangneung Sand

Gangneung Sand Main Branch is a three-floor sand cookie shop and café on Seonggokgoyang-gil in Gangneung, Gangwon.
