Sinnonhyeon tteokbokki shop with an eat-in Set B for two: Deokjane

In short

Deokjane Bangatgan is a tteokbokki (spicy rice cake) snack shop specialising in garaetteok, a 1–2 minute walk from Exit 7 of Sinnonhyeon Station in Seocho, Seoul, behind Kyobo Book Centre's Gangnam branch. Two diners ate in and shared the Basic Set B for two (tteokbokki, sundae, gimbap, fried snacks and drinks) for 22,500 won; the standouts were the thick, chewy garaetteok made fresh every morning and the spicy sauce mellowed by potato salad. For anyone who loves rice-flour tteok, Deokjane Bangatgan's single set is an easy way to try a bit of everything.

I went to Deokjane Bangatgan (덕자네방앗간), a famous tteokbokki spot near Sinnonhyeon Station. I really love tteokbokki and have been to a lot of famous places, but the rice cakes here are seriously amazing..!!!!!

Deokjane Bangatgan is near Sinnonhyeon Station, just 1-2 minutes on foot from Exit 7. It's located right behind the Gangnam branch of Kyobo Book Centre. Deokjane Bangatgan is a legit famous spot that's appeared on TV shows like Suyomisikhoe and Jul Seo Neun Matjip (shows about restaurants with long lines).

The place isn't huge, but tables are spread throughout — a mix of 4-person and 2-person tables. Clean and comfortable, that's Deokjane Bangatgan.

We grabbed a 2-person table :) There was a TV inside playing footage from when the shop appeared on Jul Seo Neun Matjip, and watching it just built up my anticipation even more!!

The menu board and the Basic Set B price

The main menu has tteokbokki, fish cakes, mul-tteok (rice cake in soup), fried snacks, sundae (blood sausage), bibim mandu (mixed dumplings), gimbap (seaweed rice roll), ramyeon, jjolmyeon (chewy cold noodles), and pork cutlet. There are also side dishes like garaetteok with jocheong (grain syrup), plain garaetteok, boiled eggs, corn dogs, and jocheong. There are set menus too, so if you want to try a bit of everything, I'd recommend going for a set! That's what I ordered.

Basic Set B is a combo of tteokbokki, sundae, gimbap, fried snacks, and a drink. It costs 22,500 won (zero-sugar cola is +500 won). It's plenty for two people to share, so I thought the value was pretty solid. I'd heard a lot of reviews saying tteokbokki alone is filling, but having the set let me try a bit of everything, which was even more satisfying.

Deokjane Bangatgan's Basic Set B: a combo of tteokbokki, sundae, gimbap, fried snacks, and a drink. We ordered it for two, and at first the portion looked huge, so I worried whether we could finish it all.. But it was so delicious we finished it anyway, hehe^___^

Daily-made garaetteok, thick and chewy

The tteokbokki was really delicious. The biggest feature of Deokjane Bangatgan's tteokbokki is that they use garaetteok made fresh by hand every morning. Maybe that's why the rice cake is so thick, and the chewiness really comes through with every bite. It felt much chewier than typical tteokbokki rice cake, with a savory flavor that builds the more you chew. If you love rice cake made from rice (not flour), you'll definitely love this tteokbokki. All the rice-cake lovers, gather round!!!!

Aged gochujang sauce and potato salad

They say the sauce is made with gochujang (chili paste) aged for about a week, and it had a deep, savory flavor without being overly harsh. There was a bit of a kick to it though (speaking as someone who can't handle spice well).

Potato salad placed on top of the tteokbokki
Mixing the potato salad into the spicy tteokbokki

The potato salad on top of the tteokbokki mellows out the spiciness haha (potato salad can't be included in takeout orders due to spoilage risk). With that spicy-sweet base and a hint of savory depth in the sauce, I even finished every last drop of the tteokbokki broth.

Plate of sundae included in the set
Fried snacks served alongside the tteokbokki

Sundae, fried snacks, and gimbap too

Pairing it with sundae and fried snacks made for a combo you keep reaching for, without feeling heavy or greasy.

Deokjane Bangatgan's generously filled gimbap

The gimbap was packed full of filling too, which made the whole set menu feel really substantial.

A good spot for days like this

If you want a hearty meal near Sinnonhyeon Station, especially if you love that chewy rice cake texture, I'd really recommend Deokjane Bangatgan. Just ordering one set lets you try tteokbokki, sundae, gimbap, and fried snacks all at once, so it'll be a satisfying visit whether you're solo or with two or three friends. If you're out at Kyobo Book Centre in Gangnam, or have plans near Sinnonhyeon Station, give it a try sometime.
