After eating near Jeongja Station, I was looking for a café to go to and ended up at Butter & Shelter Jeongja.

Butter & Shelter Jeongja was in a spot that was fine to walk to from Jeongja Station, and also convenient if you came by car. I honestly didn't know much about Butter & Shelter, but my husband already knew it well. He said it's a famous place he'd been to a few times before, and that the sand in particular is well known. That made me curious, and since it wasn't far from Jeongja Station, we headed straight over.

We went by car, and I liked that there was plenty of parking, so we didn't have to stress about it. A lot of cafés around Jeongja-dong can be a hassle to park at, so I really appreciated that this one was easy to visit by car.

When we walked in, I was a little surprised at just how many people were there — more than I expected.

You'd think with so many people around things might get chaotic, but they stayed kind both when taking orders and helping us, which made a great first impression. Yellow and green were used as accent colors, which kept it from feeling too heavy and made it comfortable, and there were posters and little props scattered around that were fun to look at.

The small interior touches were cute. And then once I actually started looking at the desserts, that's when my eyes got busy.

Since my husband said Butter & Shelter is famous for its sand, we picked one of the signature sands. True to its name, the butter sand has cream sandwiched between cookies, and it was packaged neatly so it was easy to eat one at a time. Since the sand is the menu item that represents Butter & Shelter, I'd recommend trying at least one if it's your first visit. My husband had built it up so much, we couldn't not try it.

But the menu item I really fell for that day was something else entirely — the mango cake.

Honestly, since the sand was supposed to be the famous item, I went in expecting more from that, but I ended up loving the mango cake. It had big chunks of mango on top, with a fluffy sponge sandwiched between white cream — it looked incredibly soft even before I tasted it. On the first bite, the cream, sponge, and mango all came together beautifully. The cream especially wasn't heavy or greasy at all, so I kept wanting more.

With the sweet, tangy flavor of the mango mixed in, the whole thing never felt overwhelmingly sweet. I already like cakes and desserts in general, but this one was genuinely good enough that I wanted to order another. Even after finishing a slice, I kept thinking about it and considered ordering a second one. At first I tried to leave it pretty for photos, but after one bite, my hand kept going back for more.

Personally, out of everything I ate that day, the mango cake was the most memorable. I came to a place famous for its sand and ended up falling for the cake instead, haha. So if you're a cake lover like me, don't just look at the sands — make sure to check out the cakes in the display case too.

With so many dessert options, it seems like a great place to visit with a group so everyone can pick something different and share. The cookies ranged from chocolate to original levain, and there were also scones and other cakes, so I want to try more menu items next time.
