I think a lot of people are trying to figure out where to hold a family gathering, so today I want to share a place I visited haha. It's a hanjeongsik (traditional Korean set-course) restaurant near Sanggye Jugong Complex 6 by Nowon Station — comfortable enough to bring the elders, easy enough to bring the kids, really perfect for a family gathering.
Parking was easy and there were private rooms too, so this place will be the first one I think of next time we plan a family gathering. Let's get into my review of Sutgarak Bansang Masil (숟가락반상 마실)! 😄
Where Sutgarak Bansang Masil is and when it opens
Sutgarak Bansang Masil is a 10-minute walk from Nowon Station Exit 1 😊 It's open daily 11:30–21:30, with a break time of 15:00–17:00, though there's no break time on weekends. Last order is at 20:30.
There's a parking lot and a parking attendant, so parking was easy haha.
Hanok-style exterior and the parking lot
This place is on the 2nd floor, and it's decorated in a hanok (traditional Korean house) style from the entrance, so the atmosphere felt special even before you walked in. There's a parking lot out front with an attendant, which made driving there really convenient. That's actually a pretty important point for a family gathering haha — no parking worries when you're bringing the elders.
Just a note, there's a break time on weekdays, but on weekends and holidays they run straight through without one, so keep that in mind.
Inside: private rooms, baby chairs, and a waiting area
The moment I walked in, something caught my eye — a whole wall of celebrity autographs. Looking closely, I even spotted former President Moon Jae-in's signature, which was fun and surprising lol. Fun to browse around.
Further inside, there were neatly arranged seats and separate private rooms, which looked great for family gatherings or group dinners.
There was also a baby chair ready to go, so families with young kids don't need to worry. There's also a restroom inside,
and a separate waiting area too. They even had coffee ready in the waiting area, offering a cup on the way out after the meal. That kind of thoughtful touch was nice haha.
What's on the menu at Sutgarak Bansang Masil

The menu starts with the Basic set, then gets progressively more elaborate through Masil, Chamjoeun, 귀한 (precious), and Special sets. There are also 3 separate weekday lunch sets, which looked like great value. You can also order the main dishes on their own, and they even sell lunch boxes, perfect for ordering when a group is heading out on an outing. I liked that the menu had options for so many different situations, not just family gatherings haha.
What comes with the Masil course
We ordered the Masil course. It included job's tears and cherry blossom porridge, perilla seaweed soup, orange butterfly salad, sea snail vinegar salad, crown daisy lotus pancake, spring forsythia fritters, wild chive butterfly japchae, medicinal bossam, Masil tteokgalbi, mushroom braised ribs, cherry blossom rice, spring wild chive doenjang hot pot, seasonal namul, napa cabbage kimchi, and a seasonal dessert.

First came a porridge styled after cherry blossoms, though it tasted close to plain white porridge.

Then the perilla seaweed soup, orange butterfly salad, sea snail vinegar salad, crown daisy lotus pancake, spring forsythia fritters, and wild chive butterfly japchae were all set out together.

The orange butterfly salad looked fresh just to look at, and had butterfly-shaped pasta on top — so that's why it's called a butterfly salad haha.

The chilled sea snail salad that stole the show
The dish that was much better than I expected was the sea snail vinegar salad lol. Sea snail, lotus root, cucumber, and a red jelly, all drizzled with citrus dressing — the dressing was genuinely delicious, and the red jelly had a bouncy, chewy texture unlike regular jelly, more like eating pudding. I was really impressed by this one.

The crown daisy lotus pancake had lotus root tucked in the middle of a crown daisy pancake — the mugwort-like herbal scent was fragrant, and it was more chewy than crispy, closer to eating a rice cake made from mugwort.
The spring forsythia fritters were plated so prettily they actually looked like forsythia flowers — I think the elders would really love this one.

The green fritters looked like they were made with mugwort, and shrimp fritters came along too.

The wild chive butterfly japchae is named for wild chives, but it doesn't seem to be in season so it wasn't actually in there — cucumber and wood ear mushroom were on top instead, and the seasoning was just right, so it was tasty.

Best of the course: herbal bossam and Masil tteokgalbi
The best dish here by far was the medicinal bossam (herb-boiled pork wraps) lol. Even sliced thick, it wasn't dry at all and was seasoned just right, so it was delicious even eaten on its own.
Next came Masil tteokgalbi (short rib patties) and mushroom braised ribs together — for the tteokgalbi, they told us to wait until the onions on top were cooked through before eating.
It was tender enough that they told us to cut it in big pieces, and it looked packed with nutrients, good for feeding kids too.

The mushroom braised ribs came loaded with all sorts of mushrooms, with 2 rib pieces per person — ours had 4 in total.
The meat fell right off the bone.
Red yeast rice in a stone pot and hovenia tea sungnyung
For the main meal, there was red rice cooked with red yeast rice served in a stone pot, doenjang stew, and five side dishes — mung bean sprouts, aster namul, stir-fried anchovies, marinated garlic scapes, and kimchi.

Five banchan (side dishes) in total.
The spicy doenjang stew paired with the healthy-looking red rice was really filling and satisfying.
After finishing the rice in the stone pot, they poured in cornus (hovenia) tea to make sungnyung (scorched rice tea) with the leftover crust — as someone who loves sungnyung, this was such a welcome way to finish.
Just as we were finishing up, a staff member brought us cool green tangerine tea to cleanse the palate, so it was a satisfying meal right to the very end 👍🏻
Verdict: is Sutgarak Bansang Masil good for a family meal in Nowon?
From start to finish, this was a place where you could feel the care put into every single dish. The plating was pretty and the food was tasty, so it felt easy to bring both the elders and the kids along.
- ✅ Private rooms available
- ✅ Baby chairs on hand
- ✅ Easy parking too
I thought there's really no better place for a family gathering. The staff were kind too, so the whole meal was a pleasant experience. It was satisfying enough that I naturally started thinking about hosting the next family gathering here. If you're looking for a family gathering spot in the Nowon area, I definitely recommend giving Sutgarak Bansang Masil a try! 😄
