Hongcheon hanok café salt bread and Flower Blooming in Mud: Gil151

In short

Gil151 Hanok Cafe, Gangwon Hongcheon Main Branch is a 1,800-pyeong hanok café at 147 Gilgol-gil in Nam-myeon, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon. On the last day of a family trip, the writer took an outdoor pavilion and ordered the signature drink Flower Blooming in Mud (8,300 won), the summer-only Summer Road (8,500 won), pure strawberry cake (8,000 won), salt bread and mont blanc. Drinks at Gil151 are not cheap, but the mountain view, the pavilions and the pond make the prices easy to accept.

Mom, dad, my sister, my brother-in-law, Tosil, and Chamchi — after our family trip, our last stop was going to a nice café haha. There's supposedly a massive 1,800-pyeong hanok café so we decided to check it out haha

View of the hanok café and the mountain behind it, seen from the parking lot

Whoa,, this place is seriously no joke lol. This is the view from the parking lot — mountains behind it and the weather was insane, like truly amazing~~~~~~~~~ A staff member guided our parking so it was easy

The large hanok building used as the café

Are you sure this is really a café?! Yes, it's not a hanok house, it really is a café.

Care Kids Zone notice sign

Is Gil151 good with a baby? Care Kids Zone and floor seating

There was a sign at the entrance of Gil151 Hanok Cafe — turns out it was a Care Kids Zone notice! Extra caution so babies don't get hurt! Always something to watch for when you've got little ones ㅠ

Took a photo once we came in — seriously insane. There were shoes-off floor seats too, which looked great for visiting with babies haha

Looked outside from inside for a moment — the atmosphere in here was really, really nice too, but I wanted to feel more of the hanok so I decided to head outside haha

Gil151 menu and prices, and the three americano beans

They also have this many cake options — apparently injeolmi (rice cake) flavor is the most popular. But my family stubbornly picked pure strawberry.

Menu board listing drinks and bean options

If you order an americano, you can choose your beans: Kkotgil (acidic beans), Solgil (nutty beans), or Nungil (decaf beans) — 3 options total! As you can see from the menu, it's really unique and varied lol

  • Summer Road: ₩8,500
  • Pure Strawberry Cake: ₩8,000
Café interior with seating and a baby chair

We ordered a bunch of different breads too, but for some reason I don't have a single photo of the bakery counter itself ㅠ There's a microwave and oven right next to the bread counter!!! They also had baby chairs set up! Seeing the baby chair reminds me of Tosil haha

Oh, the staff here were so, so kind — they said if we joined the review event, they'd give us dutch coffee! (Since we already came on sponsorship, I felt bad, so I said, oh I'll just write a review!) But they said 'our dutch coffee is really good, please try it' and offered it anyway haha. Such kindness, so sweet — every single staff member was incredibly kind!

Wooden veranda seat with eaves casting a shadow

This is the shot that became today's thumbnail — sitting here really felt so serene and lovely (I already love hanok houses anyway). Green outside, blue sky — it was just insane ㅠㅠ? There's something about the shadow falling under the eaves

It felt like birds were flying around, which made it even nicer — I think any seat here would be great!

Pavilion seats at Gil151 and the 1-hour-30-minute rule

I remember Gil151 Hanok Cafe has about 6 outdoor pavilions, and usage is capped at 1.5 hours with 1 drink per person. We headed outside to use a pavilion haha. There's even a waterwheel and outdoor tables you can use too — so many seats lol

Always watch your step on the stairs — you come out to an entrance that looks like a palace!

The pavilions are outdoor spaces you can use like this! There are even trees behind it, it's insane right..? I was genuinely in awe looking at it haha

Took a short clip too, seriously wild! Ah, not totally sure what that space at the far end is, but I think it might be the owner's hanok home!

Baby sitting at a table-style pavilion

The pavilion we used wasn't the shoes-off raised type but more like a table-style pavilion! I didn't get a proper photo so I'm substituting one with Tosil in it haha

  • Take your shoes off before stepping onto the pavilion
  • Maximum usage time is 1.5 hours
  • 1 drink per person
  • Of course, no smoking
  • Clean up after yourself for the next guests, obviously

Salt bread and mont blanc from the Gil151 bakery

Took a nice shot of the bread too — I told you they had a lot of bread variety, right? The bread is seriously so good lolololol. From chestnut pastry to salt bread, mont blanc, and blueberry pie; I should've ordered even more bread haha

Assortment of Gil151 breads including salt bread and mont blanc

The pure strawberry cake came out too haha. This one was quite sweet so my brother-in-law really liked it haha

A slice of pure strawberry cake

Summer Road, the summer-only plum cream soda

This is Summer Road, the summer-only menu item I ordered — a summer-limited plum cream soda topped with house-made plum syrup and house-made plum gelato! That shovel-shaped utensil is so darn cute. Summer Road was really as refreshing as the menu description says lol. I had a cold but still enjoyed it, it was refreshing and delicious!

How to drink the signature Flower Blooming in Mud

This is Junyoung's order, the signature menu item called Flower Blooming in Mud — the card next to it explains how to enjoy it best!

Signature drink 'Flower Blooming in Mud' with instruction card
  • Scoop the cookie on top together with a bit of the cream
  • Enjoy the leftover cream like an einspänner, or mix it into the latte
Close-up of the signature drink topped with cookie and cream

This one's what mom ordered for dad without even knowing the name lol. Since there was a way to eat it, I filmed a video lolol

You scoop out the flower part first, set it aside, then pour espresso in — that's how you're supposed to eat it. But dad was like, wait, if you pour it all in at once what am I supposed to do, haha lolololololol

Took a bite of the soft cake too haha. The pure strawberry isn't really a super distinctive flavor haha

Pouring espresso over the flower-decorated drink

But the bread is seriously so good, so if you come here you have to try the mont blanc

The salt bread is seriously so good — can you see that little bit of butter glistening on it...? I really should've bought way more salt bread ㅠ

Cross-section of salt bread with visible butter

Took a moody shot of the dutch coffee concentrate we got from the review event haha. Mom loved it — she said you can add it to 150–200mL of either water or milk, doesn't matter which

Fountain, pond and waterwheel: a walk around the Gil151 grounds

Ha haha, seriously insane — there's even a fountain over there, so we decided to go check that area out too haha

Bottle of dutch coffee concentrate from the review event

Just looking at it feels so refreshing, blue sky ㅠ, great weather, breeze blowing gently — I almost fell asleep in that pavilion haha

Café courtyard with a fountain and pavilion

Oh, there's a grandfather statue standing there (honestly a little startled)

Garden of the hanok café connected to a pond

It's all connected like this, and having the pond made the atmosphere even better haha. I genuinely want to live here ㅠ

Walking path around the pond and hanok building

There was also an indoor space set up in the back like this, where you could apparently roast sweet potatoes — I figured it's probably there for when the pavilions can't be used in winter!

Interior of the indoor space at the back

Anyway our Tosil loved it so much, running all over the lawn like crazy haha. Loved the pavilion too haha

Baby running around on the lawn

When Chamchi and I went to see the waterwheel and asked the baby to come along, she seemed scared and wouldn't move at all, just stood there lolololol. So adorable ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ Why was she standing there so demurely ㅠ Anyway our Tosil was having such a great time, which made us even happier haha

The restrooms here were also super clean and well-maintained, which made using them a real pleasure!!

Gil151 Hanok Cafe: what the family visit came to

Last up is the ultimate waterwheel clip,,, This place is great to visit with family, the bakery is delicious, and every drink had its own character! The drinks weren't cheap, but since we came here to soak in the atmosphere, I thought the price was reasonable!!!!! Going in this weather would be amazing, so I really recommend it!!!!!!!!

  • Definitely order the salt bread and mont blanc!!!
  • The signature menu is really special and worth trying. It's even better since they give you a card explaining the plating and how to eat it!
  • Don't miss the waterwheel and the area further back!!
  • Pavilion use is capped at 1.5 hours, so keep an eye on the time and clean up before you leave (staff wiped ours down for us)

The serene hanok atmosphere + mountain view + pavilions + autumn weather — it was genuinely perfect! Such a great café to visit with family, baby included! Will definitely stop by again next time we're in Hongcheon!!!!!
