Mangwon sashimi pub: summer lunch mulhoe for 3, Mapo Bamdada
In short
Mapo Bamdada (마포밤바다) is a sashimi restaurant and pub in Mangwon, Mapo, Seoul, near Exit 4 of Mapo-gu Office Station. For lunch, three people shared the seafood mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) for 2–3 and added a ₩10,000 hoedeopbap (raw fish rice bowl), and manila clam soup and braised pollack came included, so both the portions and the spread were generous. Mapo Bamdada opens at 12 noon and is a good-value pick for a summer mulhoe lunch.

In summer it's so hot that I lose my appetite. When that happens I really love cold noodle dishes. I eat naengmyeon (cold noodles), memil (buckwheat noodles) and mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) pretty often. Today's place is a pub in Mangwon with really great value. I went to Mapo Bamdada (마포밤바다), a sashimi restaurant near Mapo-gu Office Station, and had seafood mulhoe!

There are about 9 tables for four. It's not a huge place, but it isn't cramped either, and the mood is cozy. It feels like a cute, friendly pub by the sea.

What comes with the seafood mulhoe at a 3-person lunch?

Our lunch for three was the seafood mulhoe for 2–3 people, with a hoedeopbap ordered separately. I really liked what comes with the mulhoe. The side dishes included chamnamul (pimpinella) salad, cabbage salad, saeujang (soy-marinated shrimp), garlic, chili peppers, doenjang (soybean paste), rakkyo (pickled scallions), pickled ginger, crab stick salad and baek-kimchi (white kimchi). Clam soup and braised pollack also come as standard.
Four bundles of somyeon noodles and manila clam soup

With the seafood mulhoe you get four bundles of chewy somyeon (thin wheat noodles) and a clam soup. The soup was made with manila clams, the broth was refreshing, and the clams were plump and plentiful. It's the perfect snack to go with soju!
Braised pollack with a standout seasoning sauce

The fish is steamed, topped with a seasoning sauce, and eaten with boiled bean sprouts. I think the fish is probably kodari (half-dried pollack)! You know, that whole pollack family, myeongtae, dongtae, kodari, haha. It looks simple, but that sauce was seriously delicious!!
Mapo Bamdada seafood mulhoe for 2–3: how were the portion and taste?

The seafood mulhoe came in a hugely deep ttukbaegi (earthenware bowl). The portion was far more generous than it looks in photos!! It had raw fish, sea squirt, sea cucumber, abalone and more, and there was a lot more than I expected, so I was really satisfied!!! Plenty of fiber too, with tot (hijiki-like seaweed), lettuce and sprouts!

The broth is sweet and sour and so good!!! Just dump in all the perfectly boiled somyeon, mix it up, and you're done!!! The broth is amazing, and the abalone and sea cucumber were really fresh, so the texture was the best. Crunchy and so tasty. I gave all the sea squirt, which I don't like, to the others, and I ate a ton of sea cucumber, haha. Ah, so happy, it was really generous and delicious!! There's no better summer stamina food than this!!
Is the ₩10,000 hoedeopbap at Mapo Bamdada worth ordering?

The hoedeopbap on the lunch menu at Mapo Bamdada is ₩10,000, which is really great value!! It comes with cucumber, lettuce, sprouts, seaweed flakes, flying fish roe, pickled radish, and chewy, fresh raw fish.
I didn't add sesame oil myself, so I guess it was already in the bowl. The tang of the chogochujang (sweet-sour chili sauce) was subtle, while the nutty sesame oil came through strongly, and it was really delicious!! Definitely try this too!!
Is Mapo Bamdada a good spot for a mulhoe lunch in Mangwon?

Every dish at Mapo Bamdada was clean and tasty!! The portions are generous and the lineup is great, so for Japanese-style dishes at a Mangwon pub, the value was the best. It opens at 12 noon, so it's also a good place for lunch. If you're looking for a sashimi restaurant near Mapo-gu Office Station, I highly recommend Mapo Bamdada!!
