Sinyongsan tteokbokki with jjolmyeon, egg and rice: Hyeonseonine
In short
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is an instant tteokbokki restaurant in an alley near Sinyongsan Station in Yongsan, Seoul, where the rice cakes go into a pan and are cooked right after you order. A group of friends and a partner shared instant tteokbokki with jjolmyeon (chewy wheat noodles), egg and vegetables, then spooned the tteokbokki sauce over the white rice served alongside. The chewy rice cakes, deep gochujang sauce, roomy tables and friendly staff at Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch made for a fully satisfying meal.

I never knew instant tteokbokki (pan-cooked spicy rice cakes) could be this good 🌶️

First impressions of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch in the Sinyongsan alley
Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch (현선이네 용산본점) is an instant tteokbokki restaurant tucked into an alley near Sinyongsan Station. A great instant tteokbokki find somewhere in the backstreets! 🎯 From the sign to the storefront, it all feels cute. You order at a kiosk, which is convenient, and the interior is bright, which put me in a good mood.

Once you order, they put the rice cakes straight into the pan and cook it for you. "Instant" really lives up to the name! The aroma is wonderful from the moment the white rice cakes go into the pan. Watching them turn slightly translucent as they meet the red sauce looks so delicious.

How chewy are the rice cakes at Hyeonseonine?
The biggest draw of the tteokbokki here is, above all, the rice cakes! They're truly chewy, and you feel that springiness with every bite. Because fresh rice cakes are cooked on the spot, you get a chewy texture you'd never find in ones that have sat around. They don't turn mushy in your mouth, and have a clean texture that makes you want to keep chewing. My friends even said, "Wow, these rice cakes really are different!" The freshness and bounce were impressive, something you can't get at ordinary tteokbokki shops. The feeling with each bite is so good that I kept reaching for my spoon.

How spicy is it? The gochujang sauce
The first bite hits you with a strong heat, but it's never harsh. Underneath is the deep, rich flavor of gochujang (red chili paste), so it goes beyond simple spiciness into something truly addictive. I'd say it's on a completely different level from ordinary tteokbokki sauce. I carefully took one spoonful at first, but it was so addictive that I kept reaching for the spoon. My partner said, "This is really different," and my friends kept eating saying, "Wow, this is really good." You keep eating and suddenly think, "Huh? Half of it's already gone?" The balance of gochujang's deep savoriness and just the right heat is the best.
It's not just rice cakes.
- Chewy jjolmyeon noodles
- Egg (soft texture)
- Assorted vegetables

With everything in one pan, the different textures and flavors come together beautifully in your mouth. It feels less like plain "tteokbokki" and more like a well-rounded full meal. My friends even said, "Wow, this is really packed," and the pan was truly generous. The rice cakes, noodles and egg each play their own part while working in harmony, which is just excellent.

Spooning tteokbokki sauce over white rice
At Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch, white rice comes with the instant tteokbokki. The moment you put the tteokbokki sauce on that rice, you know this is truly the best combination! The way the spicy sauce meets the softness of the white rice is hard to put into words. A spoonful of tteokbokki on top of rice is just perfect. The rice tames the heat while also bringing out the flavor of the tteokbokki. Me, my partner next to me, and my friends all ate tteokbokki with rice and said, "Okay, this is the real thing." The combination is so good that I can't imagine enjoying this tteokbokki fully without rice. Side dishes come out carefully prepared too, and they're even better with the rice, making it a really complete meal.

Is it comfortable for a group?
The tables are really wide enough to be comfortable, making this a perfect spot to visit with friends! I came with friends and my partner, and it was comfortable and pleasant. Even with several people at one table eating their own portions, the table is big enough not to feel cramped, with room to share each other's food. You can also watch the cooking process at the counter, which is its own kind of fun. It was great watching my friends say "Wow, look at this!" as the tteokbokki cooked. The mood is easy whether you come with family, friends or a partner, and it's a space where you can eat very comfortably. The seating is laid out well, so I could sit without any discomfort.

How was the staff?
Another big plus of Hyeonseonine Yongsan Main Branch is how friendly the staff are! From ordering until the food arrived, the kind and attentive service was really impressive. They could tell we weren't sure how to order, so a staff member explained kindly, and when the food came out they warmly checked, "Is this the right spice level?" which I loved. They never lost their friendly attitude even during busy hours, which was impressive. With a group there's a lot to look after, but they treated us very considerately. The staff's kindness became one of the biggest reasons I want to come back. Tasty food matters, but friendly service like this makes it an even better experience.
