In short

Narae Susan is a sashimi restaurant on the first floor of the Garak Mall sales building in Songpa, Seoul, about 200m from Garak Market Station Exit 1. On a weekend visit, the writer and her boyfriend ordered the Premium live sashimi platter for two at 70,000 won to go, which came with salmon, red seabream, sea bass, yellowtail scad and large flounder, plus salmon and red seabream belly and a complimentary plate of abalone sashimi. Every slice at Narae Susan was thick and fresh, making this second visit as satisfying as the first one for winter yellowtail.

I wanted some good sashimi with my boyfriend this weekend, so we headed to ✶Narae Susan✶, a well-known fish restaurant at Garak Market! I fell in love with their yellowtail last time, so I trusted them enough to come back haha.

This time we ordered the Premium live platter. It had all kinds of fish I don't usually get to try, plus yellowtail scad, one of my favorites! Everything was thick-cut and fresh overall, so let me walk you through our visit to Narae Susan ¨•.✦

How to find Narae Susan: 200m from Garak Market Station Exit 1

Narae Susan is at 48, 1F Sales Building, Garak Mall, 932 Yangjae-daero, Songpa-gu, Seoul, South Korea. It's about 200m from Garak Market Station Exit 1, so it was easy to get to by public transit!

From the station, walk straight into the center of Garak Market.

Sign and blue door marking the entrance to Garak Mall's fish market

You'll see a sign marked "Suhsan (fish market)" right away, and going through the blue door labeled "Suhsan" inside gets you right to Narae Susan! If you get confused, just look for "Building 1, Gate 1."

What's swimming in the tanks: seasonal seafood at Narae Susan

Tank holding live shrimp and gizzard shad

The first thing I noticed walking in was the tank — the water was crystal clear and really well maintained!

The tank was packed with all kinds of seafood, and I spotted live shrimp and gizzard shad, both in season right now haha. I asked and was told the live shrimp were ₩35,000 per 1kg — the shrimp looked huge and super fresh, so they caught my eye!

Narae Susan menu: Narae, Premium and VIP live platters

Narae Susan offers everything from the 4-species "Narae" live platter to the 5-species "Premium" and the 6-species "VIP" platter with higher-end fish, so you can choose based on group size and taste. Since it's autumn season, they also had a single-serving and platter version of "autumn gizzard shad" and an "autumn kkase" (thin-sliced sashimi) menu!

Special futomaki and special assorted sushi menu

They were also selling a special futomaki and special assorted sushi, which I hadn't seen much at other sashimi restaurants. I was curious how sushi from a fish market would taste haha. It seems like a great add-on if sashimi alone feels a bit lacking!

What comes in the 70,000-won Premium live platter for two

We ordered the Premium live platter this time! It came carefully packed in an insulated bag, so we could carry it home safely even during the hour-long trip haha.

Opening it up, the visual was overwhelming~~!!

This is the 'Premium' live platter! It's a 5-species set that includes flounder, salmon, and red seabream, and mine came with salmon, red seabream, sea bass, yellowtail scad, and large flounder, plus salmon belly and red seabream belly.

They also wrote the name of each fish on the plastic wrap, so you'd know exactly what you were eating, which I really loved! I've been to a lot of fish markets, but this was the first time I'd seen a place go as far as labeling every cut ..• ♥

Plastic wrap labeled with the names of each fish

The basic setup came with chojang (vinegar chili sauce), wasabi, pickled radish, pickled ginger, and three portions of soy sauce plus makjang (spicy dipping paste)!! Even the basic setup was neat and complete ♡

Basic sides: chojang, wasabi, pickled radish, pickled ginger
Free serving of abalone sashimi

And they even threw in a free serving of abalone sashimi!!

This is why fish markets feel extra satisfying — when they load you up with freebies like this haha. Everyone knows the best fish markets are the ones that give generously, right? 🤭

How each fish tasted, from red seabream belly to yellowtail scad

Premium live platter neatly arranged on a plate

The moment we opened the package and saw everything neatly arranged, my boyfriend and I both let out a "wow" haha. Every cut was sliced so thick, it looked incredibly appetizing!

Maybe because it's premium-grade, the sashimi practically glowed ..・・・★

Sashimi platter with fish names labeled

We checked off each fish name written on the wrap one by one as we ate, figuring out what each cut was haha.

Red seabream and red seabream belly

First up was red seabream! The moment I took a bite, I felt this really chewy texture, and the sweet umami built up more with every chew. This was my boyfriend's top pick of the day haha.

I also tried red seabream belly for the first time here! It's a white fish, but it had a surprisingly rich, fatty flavor. Combined with a chewy, slightly crunchy texture, it was really delicious haha.

Sea bass

This was my first time trying sea bass! Instead of a bouncy texture, you could really feel the grain of the flesh — it was different in a good way, chewy yet light and clean :)

A piece of sea bass sashimi

Yellowtail scad

The yellowtail scad sashimi I recently fell in love with! That savory richness unique to blue-backed fish really came through, along with a chewy, slightly crunchy texture. This was my top pick of the day •♥

Large flounder

I'd never had such a springy flounder before! The bouncy, chewy texture was on full display, and being a large flounder, each piece was big enough to fill your mouth — it felt so satisfying haha.

Salmon and salmon belly

The salmon must have been premium grade too, because the marbling was insane! The salmon belly especially was as fatty as eating tuna — the savory salmon aroma spread through my whole mouth.

Sliced thick like that, the slightly crunchy texture was perfect too!!

My boyfriend even dunked his salmon in soy sauce separately, eating it like yeonjang (soy-marinated raw fish) lol.

With every single bite, we kept clapping, gasping, and drinking soju on repeat ~~lol

Sashimi dipped in wasabi soy sauce

Can you see the spoon piled high with sashimi haha? We tried it with cheongyang chili on makjang, and also dipped it straight into wasabi soy sauce — however we ate it, the fish was fresh and delicious :)

Finishing with buldak naengmyeon (spicy chicken cold noodles)

People usually finish with spicy fish stew or ramyeon, but we were craving something cold that day, so we made buldak naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles)! Topping it with leftover sashimi gave it a bit of a mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) vibe, and the combo was pretty great! We enjoyed everything from the sashimi to the last bite of noodles :)

Is Narae Susan worth a return visit?

Overall, every cut of sashimi was thick and fresh, so the Premium live platter was really satisfying! I got to try a variety of fish species I don't usually eat, and getting free abalone sashimi on top made it even better haha.

The yellowtail I had here before was great too, and this visit was just as satisfying, so I'd love to come back for another seasonal catch next time :) If you're looking for quality sashimi at Garak Market, I'd recommend Narae Susan~!
