Yuil Jangeo (유일장어) has plenty of parking in front of the restaurant, so driving there was no trouble. It was mealtime and the place was busy, but I got in without any parking worries.

I had a meal plan in Gwangju and wasn't sure where to go, so I went to Yuil Jangeo, which had good reviews. What side dishes are at the Yuil Jangeo self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar has lettuce, perilla leaves, ginger strips, pickled onion, garlic and chili peppers, and you can grab more whenever you run low. Side dishes matter at an eel place, right? Each one was neatly prepared, and I never felt short of anything during the meal.

When the eel arrived, its thick cut caught my eye right away. Once it went on the charcoal, a rich, nutty smell rose up and I could hardly wait. Just watching it turn golden made my mouth water.

Customers kept coming in while we ate, so I guess there are plenty of regulars. Everyone from families to groups of older folks was there, and I could see why people choose this place for a meal in Gwangsan, Gwangju. The relaxed mood made me think it works well for a family meal out too.

Above all, the staff were friendly and the food was kept clean, so I could enjoy the meal. The eel quality was good and the side dishes were great, so overall I was very satisfied.

How was the charcoal-grilled eel at Yuil Jangeo?

Grilled over charcoal, the thick eel was slightly chewy outside and soft and tender inside, with no fishy taste at all. Even the sizzling sound on the charcoal made it feel delicious. A little oil rose and the surface began to glisten, and my mouth watered just looking at it. Every time I flipped it, a faint charcoal aroma drifted up, and watching it turn golden made me even more excited.

As the surface cooked to a tempting color, the eel's nutty aroma began to spread. Rather than grilling it too crisp, I ate it cooked just until the flesh stayed moist, and the texture was really good. When I bit in, the rich juices filled my mouth.

The faint charcoal smoke soaked in, and the nutty flavor got stronger the more I chewed. The eel is thick, so the chew was great too, and its clean but deep flavor made me understand why people eat it as a restorative food.

The first bite: eel only, no dipping

I ate the first piece of eel as it was, with nothing on it, and the eel's own rich, nutty flavor came through strongly. It was the tastiest moment of the meal. The well-grilled edges in particular kept a slightly crisp texture, which made them even better. Moist inside and golden outside was just right.

Slightly crisp outside, really moist inside, and a nutty flavor filling my mouth with no fishiness. There's a reason they say the first bite should be eaten in its natural taste.

Lettuce wraps with ginger strips and pickled onion

After that, I started making wraps in earnest. I put eel on lettuce and added ginger strips and pickled onion, and the crunch and nutty flavor went together really well. It cut the richness and added savory depth, so I kept reaching for more.

The wrapping greens were fresh too, which I liked. With fresh lettuce and perilla leaves, the crunch stayed lively when eaten with the eel. Eel really does taste better as a wrap.

What was the best combination at Yuil Jangeo?

My personal favorite was a perilla leaf wrap with eel, grilled garlic and ginger strips. The fragrant perilla made it taste even better, and it was so good that I kept making the same combination again and again.

The pickled onion was a must. Its tang cut the eel's richness, and I had it refilled several times. The ginger strips gave off a faint aroma that paired well with the eel, and none of the side dishes were harsh, so they let the eel's flavor shine.
