Hello!!! It's Gaechu!!

These days wakppu balls are absolutely everywhere on Instagram and social media, right?? I hate to admit it, but this old-school night-owl Gaechu hasn't even seen a real wakppu ball in person yet lol. Anyway, I got a top-tier tip that there's an amazing menu item called 'wakppu salt bread' instead!!

Partly to make up for missing out on wakppu balls and partly just to treat myself lol, the second I heard the news I ran straight to Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch, the place everyone in the neighborhood calls the salt bread spot in Uijeongbu!!!

This place is already famous among dessert nerds not just for its crisp-outside-soft-inside salt bread, but for a whole lineup of jaw-dropping desserts, including financiers that are crispy outside and chewy inside! Let's see if it lives up to the hype and whether I find my ultimate salt bread!!

So come with me, Gaechu, as we go raid some wakppu salt bread right now!!!!!!

Where is Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch, and is there parking?

Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch is on the Sin-gok-dong shopping street near Gyeonggi Provincial Government North Complex Station (26 Cheongsaro 5beon-gil). It's easy to reach by public transit, and if you're driving, no worries — there's a parking lot inside the building, so parking is totally hassle-free lol.

The moment I arrived, a warm beige facade with a cute little orange door welcomed me! The entrance already has that full Instagram vibe, perfect for photos lol.

The August event poster at the Byway Bakers entrance

The storefront window was covered in eye-catching posters!

  • August Rudy-wi EVENT: Free random 'frozen financier' with purchases over ₩20,000!
  • Today's star, wakppu salt bread: an announcement of the dazzling wakppu lineup!
  • Hong Kong pineapple bun: crispy butter cookie, cold real butter, and sweet-tangy jam combo!
  • National Snack Project: financier set discounts and a value 4-piece salt bread package (₩9,000)!
  • Double chocolate baguette: packed with rich chocolate, billed as the ultimate crispy-outside-chewy-inside dessert!

Just reading the posters at the entrance made my chest swell with excitement at all the bread options — such a happy dilemma over what to pick lol.

Inside Byway Bakers: the bread lineup on the shelves

Inside, Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch is decorated with cozy, atmospheric wooden interiors and pretty lighting. Rather than seating, it's more of a proper takeout-focused bakery style lol.

The display cases and refrigerated showcase were packed with delicious-looking breads wherever you look, and just looking at them made me happy lol. Since this place is widely recognized as the salt bread and dessert spot in Uijeongbu, let's take a look at just how solid the lineup is.

  • Financier line: almond chocolate, yellow cheese, vanilla, pistachio, pecan pie, and more — a variety of gift-worthy package sets to choose from!
  • Salt bread & bakery: from plain salt bread to egg, ham cheese, mocha salt bread, plus croissants, garlic baguette, Hong Kong pineapple bun, and various loaf breads!
  • Signature chilled desserts: the wakppu salt bread line kept beautifully in the showcase, along with visually stunning handmade cakes!

I wanted to eat everything and agonized for a while lol, but in the end I picked Shanghai butter rice cake, sweet corn wakppu salt bread, golden egg tart, and plain salt bread!!

Plus, since I neatly hit the ₩20,000 minimum, I got a free 'frozen financier' as a bonus lol. There's no way I could pass up an event like that!!

Packed everything up nicely with all the breads I wanted lol. Even the orange patterned paper bag felt so full of character it made me happy for no reason!

Carrying the heavy bag and sniffing the bread smell, I hurried straight home lol. What would the wakppu salt bread and desserts actually look and taste like?? Let's go home and open it up right away!!!!!

Opening the sweet corn wakppu salt bread at home

The moment I opened the packaging, the savory-sweet bread smell hit me first lol, and then taking each item out one by one, the visuals were so dazzling I was doubly amazed!!

  • Sweet corn wakppu salt bread: true to its signature status, this had the most overwhelming visual lol. The yellow wakppu coating is applied cleanly on the outside, topped generously with sweet corn kernels, and just looking at it feels like sweetness bursting out! I wonder what the inside is like...
  • Golden egg tart: inside the thick, crispy-looking tart shell, yellow custard cream is packed in, looking heavy and irresistible lol. The golden-baked surface seems to say 'I'm totally soft' lol.
  • Shanghai butter rice cake: the round, golden-baked look already radiates savoriness! Crispy outside, and the buttery aroma combined with the chewiness of rice cake makes it feel like it'll deliver the essence of crispy-outside-chewy-inside with the first bite — I'm already excited lol.
  • Salt bread & frozen financier: the golden-baked plain salt bread is the textbook classic, and the frozen financier I got as a bonus is apparently best eaten frozen — I can already sense the dense, chewy texture it'll have cold lol.

Whoa!! Everything genuinely looks so delicious that I'm stuck in a happy dilemma over what to eat first — a total visual explosion scene!!

Mom splits the salt bread before anyone can look

I handed the wakppu salt bread to my mom for a moment to film a video of it being neatly split in half for the blog... lol

While I lowered the camera slightly to adjust the setup, saying 'just a sec~', my mom had already, without mercy, split it wide open in a split second?? Lolololol

So flustered, I snapped 'I said just a sec—' and got annoyed, then went 'ugh whatever, I'm not doing it!' — such a childish Gaechu lol. In the end the pretty splitting video was a total flop lol, but let's just eat it right away and see how it tastes!!!!!!

Taste test: sweet corn wakppu salt bread to Shanghai butter rice cake

Setting aside the incident of Mom's lightning-fast split (?), I finally started popping each piece into my mouth one by one lol. Whoa!! The moment I took a bite, I immediately understood why Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch is so widely known as the salt bread spot in Uijeongbu lol.

  • Sweet corn wakppu salt bread: the sweetness of the wakppu coating on the outside, the crispy bread texture, and the sweet corn cream that bursts with every bite — the combination is genuinely insane lol. Sweetness and savoriness explode together, and it's incredibly addictive!!
  • Golden egg tart: a big bite reveals a crisp exterior and a pudding-like, jiggly-soft custard cream that spreads richly through your mouth lol. Savory and sweet — it makes you crave an Americano instantly!!
  • Shanghai butter rice cake: this is genuinely a hidden gem lol. Crisply baked outside, completely chewy like rice cake inside! The more you chew, the more the rich buttery aroma and savoriness wash over you — a flavor that anyone, from grandmas to kids, would love without exception!
  • Plain salt bread & frozen financier: the plain salt bread is the textbook definition of crispy-outside-soft-inside saltiness, so good you keep reaching for more, and the frozen financier as a bonus had that cold, dense, chewy texture fully intact — a perfectly clean way to finish the desserts lol.

From the visuals to the taste to the generous over-₩20,000 promotion, this was a completely satisfying dessert haul with nothing lacking lol.

If you're near Sin-gok-dong or the government complex area in Uijeongbu and looking for a legendary dessert spot or the ultimate salt bread, definitely stop by Byway Bakers Cheongsa Main Branch! Gaechu highly recommends it!! Return visit intention: 240,000%!!!!!!
