Wonju pub with free starter udon and beer: Haengbokhan Udong

In short

Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch is an udon and bunsik (Korean snack food) restaurant that doubles as a pub in the Dangwan housing district of Dangu-dong, Wonju, and the writer has visited more times than they can count. On this visit the writer paired old-style pork cutlet and bibim mandu (spicy mixed dumplings) with beer, got the udon that Haengbokhan Udong Gage serves free as a starter with every order, and found their own old drawing still on the customer graffiti wall. Haengbokhan Udong Gage is an easy, affordable Dangu-dong regular's spot for a full meal or a beer or makgeolli with snacks.

My regular spot in Dangu-dong, Wonju: Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch

If you're looking for a good place to eat in Dangu-dong, Wonju, Hongsik (the writer) thinks of Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch (행복한우동가게 단관점) first, no hesitation! I've been so many times I've lost count. Officially my nth regular spot 👏

I first came because the udon was so good, but now it's the first place I think of whether I want a drink or a hearty meal 😁

Side dishes and meals other than udon at Haengbokhan Udong

It's famous as an udon place, but udon isn't all there is ♡♡ The side dishes are great and the meals are satisfying, so customers keep coming at lunch and dinner!

They say fresh ingredients, strict hygiene and honest service matter most to them, and you can really feel that sincerity when you eat!

Inside Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch

"We'd rather be a restaurant one person visits 100 times than one 100 people visit once." That saying suits Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch perfectly. The staff always greet you brightly and kindly, which makes for a pleasant meal, another big plus!

Old-style pork cutlet and bibim mandu with beer: how was it?

This time I ordered the nostalgic old-style pork cutlet and bibim mandu (dumplings tossed in a spicy-sweet sauce), and paired them with a beer. Perfect!!

Old-style pork cutlet: Korean pork loin with a sweet, nostalgic sauce

The big old-style cutlet uses fresh Korean pork loin ♡ The meat is tender and thick 👍 Above all, the sweet, retro-style cutlet sauce really brings back memories^^ It tasted exactly like school cafeteria food from my childhood, so I was thrilled haha

Bibim mandu, highly recommended!

Bibim mandu topped with vegetables in a sweet and tangy sauce

The sweet, tangy, savory sauce gets a thumbs up! It's piled generously with fresh vegetables, so the texture is the best 👍

Eaten with crispy fried dumplings, it went perfectly with a glass of beer haha

Free starter udon served with an order

Is the starter udon at Haengbokhan Udong free?

Yes, at Haengbokhan Udong Gage Dangwan Branch, they serve udon free as the starter when you order. And of course it's delicious udon! The starter udon is genuinely touching.

The deep, rich broth is the best! It's cool and clean, and with just this I could finish a bottle of soju in no time 🫣🫣

A Dangu-dong pub and meal spot in Wonju: what about delivery?

Many people come for a meal, but plenty of customers, like me, come for a light beer or makgeolli (Korean rice wine). It's a place that works as both drinking food and a proper meal! A Dangu-dong favorite ✔️ Prices are easy on the wallet, so ordering several dishes together is still very satisfying, and it's great value ♡

I've ordered delivery several times too, and no worries about the food getting worse. It's piping hot just like in the restaurant ♡ You can enjoy it at home. The pancake (buchimgae) is so good too^^ On rainy days I always end up ordering delivery 😁

Looking around after a long time, I was so happy to see the drawing I made before still there 🥹🥹 Can you guess where it is? haha Memories that stay put as time passes make this place even more endearing ♡ The food is good, the atmosphere is good, and you can feel the human warmth, so I think I'll keep coming back~~
