Guwol-dong sashimi restaurant: butter-grilled abalone and hoedeopbap

In short

Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch is a sashimi restaurant in Guwol-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, serving sashimi, seafood and mul-hoe (chilled raw fish soup). On a hot day the writer stopped by with her sister after a movie stage greeting and shared mul-hoe, hoedeopbap (raw fish rice bowl) and butter-grilled abalone, then fried her own kimchi pancake at the self-bar. All three dishes tasted clean with no fishy smell, and she left wanting to bring her mul-hoe-loving mother next time.

With the weather getting hotter these days, I kept craving something cool and tangy. Then I heard there was a stage greeting for the movie Hof at Incheon CGV, so I headed out to see a movie for the first time in a while. While I was out, I looked for somewhere in Incheon where I could get mul-hoe and sashimi together, and that's how I ended up at Veteran General Fish Market Incheon Guwol Branch.

The menu ranges from sashimi to seafood to mul-hoe, and the space was spacious and clean, so it looked good for a family meal or a get-together with friends too. Most of all, the seafood in the tank outside looked so fresh that I was already excited before even walking in.

What the restaurant looks like inside

Spacious, clean tables inside the restaurant

Walking in, the place was actually bigger than I'd expected. The tables weren't crammed together, and everything felt clean overall, so it seemed like a perfect spot for a family meal. The staff were friendly too, which made for a good first impression.

What we ordered: mul-hoe, hoedeopbap and butter-grilled abalone

The menu had a lot of options — mixed sashimi platter, lunch specials, seafood stew, hoedeopbap, mul-hoe, and more! Among them, we ordered three things: mul-hoe + hoedeopbap + abalone butter grilled. When you visit with more people, it's actually better to share a few different dishes rather than stick to just one.

Mul-hoe: chilled raw fish soup for a hot day

First up was the mul-hoe I'd been most looking forward to. It was exactly the flavor I crave in this hot weather — the broth was cold and refreshing in a way that instantly perked up my appetite. It was tangy and clean, perfect for a hot day, and eating it with the generous amount of sashimi made for a great texture too.

Taking a spoonful of mul-hoe

This is exactly why I want to recommend this place to anyone looking for a mul-hoe sashimi restaurant in Incheon. On days when eating plain sashimi feels too heavy but a simple meal alone feels lacking, ordering a cool mul-hoe alongside it was great.

Hoedeopbap: raw fish rice bowl

Hoedeopbap piled high with sashimi

Next was the hoedeopbap! It was hearty too! It wasn't a style with mostly vegetables — there was a generous amount of sashimi in it, so it felt like a satisfying meal on its own. The fish was really fresh with no fishy taste at all, so it was clean and easy to eat. Mixing it up with chogochujang (vinegared chili paste), I remembered why hoedeopbap always hits the spot.

If you love sashimi but want to try a variety of dishes, ordering a plate of sashimi alongside hoedeopbap to share sounds like a great idea too.

Butter-grilled abalone

Soft and buttery — personally, the abalone butter grilled quietly ended up being my favorite dish. The abalone was on the softer side, and the butter aroma was quite strong, giving it a nice savory flavor. Ordering something buttery alongside the cool dishes like sashimi and mul-hoe turned out to be a great combination too.

What all three dishes had in common was that none of them had any fishy smell — they were clean across the board. That really matters if you're sensitive to fishy flavors when eating seafood or sashimi. We enjoyed all three dishes cleanly and deliciously!

The fun of frying our own kimchi jeon (kimchi pancake) at the self-bar — this was the fun part of the meal! There's a separate self-bar set up, and it was kept clean overall.

The DIY kimchi jeon corner

There's a spot specifically for frying your own kimchi jeon, so I tried making one myself mid-meal, and it was more fun than I expected. I'd assumed this was purely a sashimi-and-seafood spot, but having this kind of hands-on element made for good conversation with the group while eating. If you're visiting with kids or a bigger group, a self-bar like this could add a bit of extra fun.

Final verdict: a Guwol-dong sashimi restaurant worth returning to with family

The table after finishing the meal

A Guwol-dong sashimi restaurant I'd like to come back to with my mom. This time I visited with my sister, but once we finished eating, my mom was the first person I thought of. She's been craving mul-hoe lately, and after trying it here, I thought I really need to bring her next time.

With cool, refreshing mul-hoe plus hoedeopbap and abalone butter grilled all on offer, it seems like a good spot for a family visit too. It'll especially suit you if you'd rather order several dishes to share instead of sticking to just one. On a day when you're craving sashimi in Guwol-dong and want to enjoy a range of seafood dishes in a clean setting, this is a place worth stopping by.
