A great atmosphere for eel in Balsan
Any eel lovers out there? I like eel so much that I travel around eating it here and there :) This time I visited Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel (장수촌 풍천장어), near Balsan Station.

At first I thought 1kg of eel would be plenty, but I ended up ordering another 500g haha. Let me start my honest review.
Where is Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel, and is there parking?
Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel is on the 2nd floor of a building on Gangseo-ro 54-gil, near Exit 3 of Balsan Station. There is parking in front of the building, so it works fine if you come by car.

A spacious hall with the windows open
The tables in the hall are spaced out comfortably, so it looks good for a family meal, a company dinner or a group gathering. When I visited, the windows were wide open, and with the cool breeze coming in it didn't feel stuffy at all. The atmosphere was lovely.

A total winner for atmosphere!! A place where you feel the cool breeze while eating hot charcoal-grilled eel :)
How much is 1kg of eel after trimming?
Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel sells its eel by weight before trimming. We ordered 1kg of eel first, and the menu states this basis.

It said that if you order 1kg, the actual weight after trimming is about 550–600g.

When ordering eel, it's worth keeping in mind that the weight differs before and after trimming like this.
Do they give you an eel shot before the meal?
While we waited after ordering, a staff member gave us one pouch of eel extract (eel shot) each. I've been to so many eel restaurants, but this was my first time getting an eel shot as a free pre-meal service, haha.

You usually come expecting just grilled eel, right? But when they start by handing you an eel shot, it feels like... I came here for some proper health-boosting??? That's the feeling I got.

When I paid, I noticed they also sell the eel shots separately at the counter, in packs of 30!!
Do you have to grill the eel yourself?
At Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel, the staff grill the eel for you from start to finish, so all you have to do is eat. The eel I'd been waiting for, at last!

The eel turning golden brown over the hot charcoal made my mouth water just looking at it. What I liked most was that a staff member grills the eel from start to finish. The texture of eel changes depending on how it's grilled, and it burns or breaks apart easily if you get it wrong, so leaving it to an expert was so comfortable.

We just chatted while waiting, then happily ate the perfectly grilled eel. That's it!

Maybe because it's grilled over charcoal, the nutty flavor was great, and it tasted even better eaten piping hot.
Free jangchu-tang and the self-serve bar
When you order eel at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel, you also get a bowl of jangchu-tang (eel and perilla soup) as a free service. And that wasn't all.

I liked being able to have warm soup before the grilled eel came out. Mix rice into the jangchu-tang and that alone would make a pretty filling meal.

Grilled eel plus jangchu-tang felt like a real energy recovery, haha! If you run short of any of the side dishes served with it, you can grab as much as you need from the self-serve bar!

Why I added 500g of eel even though I was full
After finishing the first 1kg of eel at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel, I was pretty full. With the jangchu-tang too, I thought I'd definitely had enough, but...

Strangely, eel just keeps going down, you know? Haha! In the end I ordered 500g more! I'd said I was full, but I enjoyed the extra eel a lot too.

Maybe,, the cool open windows had something to do with it.
Overall verdict on Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel
The eel at Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel tasted great, and the pre-meal eel shot, the jangchu-tang and the staff grilling made it a memorable place. With its spacious hall and parking, it's a good option to keep in mind for a family meal or company dinner.

I especially loved the time I spent eating charcoal-grilled eel in a space with the windows wide open and a cool breeze blowing :)

If you're looking for a great eel restaurant in Balsan, I fully recommend Jangsuchon Pungcheon Eel!!
