Yongridan-gil raw fish pub for makhoe gim wraps with mom: Joseonmakhae
In short
Joseonmakhae (조선막해) is a makhoe (roughly sliced raw fish) and seafood pub on the basement level near Samgakji Station on Yongridan-gil in Yongsan, Seoul. Over dinner with her mom, the writer had the same-day Pohang oily flounder Joseon makhoe (₩23,900) and the Joseon giant fire squid stir-fry (₩32,900), and her mom, who rarely eats raw fish, kept wrapping the makhoe in gim (seaweed). At Joseonmakhae the makhoe gim wraps are a must-order, while the fire squid stir-fry suits people who handle spicy food well.

Today I went to Joseonmakhae (조선막해) in Yongridan-gil for dinner with my mom. (Honestly SO delicious...!!!! ❤️)

Where is Joseonmakhae on Yongridan-gil, and when is it open?
Joseonmakhae is a makhoe (casual sliced raw fish) and seafood snack pub on the basement level, tucked inside Yongridan-gil within walking distance of Samgakji Station. As the name suggests, you can get a wide range of makhoe and seafood dishes to go with drinks.
- Tue–Thu 17:00–24:00 / last order 23:00
- Fri–Sat 16:00–01:00 / last order 24:00
- Sun 16:00–23:00 / last order 22:00
- Closed every Monday
The shop is in the basement!

The entrance down is a little low, so tall people, watch your head haha

Joseonmakhae's atmosphere and QR ordering
Inside, the mood is more relaxed than I expected. It's good for a casual drink for two, and there are seats for bigger groups too, so it looks fine if you're searching for a gathering spot in Yongridan-gil. You order by scanning a QR code.

Below is the menu.

What my mom and I ordered at Joseonmakhae, with prices
That day we ordered the Joseon giant fire squid stir-fry (₩32,900) and the fresh wild Joseon makhoe (₩23,900).

- Joseon giant fire squid stir-fry ₩32,900
- Fresh wild Joseon makhoe ₩23,900

For drinks, we got one single-serve draft beer and one glass of Terra draft beer. The single-serve draft is 178ml for ₩2,500, which is handy when you don't want to drink much but want just one glass with your food. The regular 380ml Terra draft was ₩6,000.

How does Joseonmakhae's oily flounder makhoe taste?
We were told the makhoe that day was oily flounder brought in the same day from Pohang, in North Gyeongsang. One bite and I was surprised at how much richer and nuttier it was than I expected.

True to the name "oily flounder," it isn't just light and clean. A subtle nutty richness comes up as you chew, and the texture is springy and chewy, so it's really good. My mom especially doesn't usually eat raw fish. So when ordering I figured I'd be eating almost all of it... but what?! haha
Once she tried it, she kept wrapping piece after piece and eating them. Seeing even my raw-fish-averse mom enjoy it made me weirdly proud haha (Even while I was taking photos, her hand was already reaching for the gim, haha. Ahh so proud 🤓❤️)
How to eat makhoe: building a gim (seaweed) wrap step by step
The makhoe is sooo good wrapped in gim (dried seaweed sheets)! The table even has instructions on how to eat it best.

- Put the makhoe on a sheet of gim
- Top the fish with vegetable makjang (seasoned soybean paste)
- Add the secret cabbage salad
- Finish with the special mayo sauce!
- Wrap it up and eat it in one bite, done

At first I thought, mayo on raw fish...? But it actually goes together really well. Salty makjang, crunchy cabbage and smooth mayo on top of the rich oily flounder make it taste different from eating the fish plain. With the gim added, lots of flavors and textures land in a single bite, and we ate almost everything this way.

How spicy is the Joseon giant fire squid stir-fry?
The Joseon giant fire squid stir-fry (₩32,900), the other signature dish we ordered alongside the makhoe, felt a bit spicier than Buldak ramen (Korean fire-noodle ramen) to me haha

As the name says, one big whole squid sits on top, so the look alone is intense. The special sauce has a smoky fire flavor, and there's a generous bed of bean sprouts underneath that goes well with the squid.
But this... is really spicy haha. At first the smoky flavor is great and you keep reaching for more, but as you go your mouth gets hotter and hotter 🔥 Even someone like me who handles spicy food fairly well found it spicy, so if you don't do spice, I'd suggest asking when you order whether the heat level can be adjusted. On the plus side, the spicy sauce with that strong smoky flavor went really well with draft beer.

Cool your mouth with some makhoe, take a bite of the spicy squid, then a sip of draft beer... this combo is great haha
Dinner with mom at Joseonmakhae: what we would order again
What stuck with me most after eating at Joseonmakhae in Yongridan-gil with my mom was the makhoe. Please, please order this haha. The oily flounder was brought in the same day from Pohang, so it was rich and chewy, and the combo of makhoe, vegetable makjang, cabbage salad and special mayo piled on gim was far better than I expected.

Above all, my mom, who doesn't usually eat raw fish, kept saying it was delicious, so this is the dish I'd order again. The giant fire squid stir-fry, on the other hand, I'd recommend to people who love seriously spicy food. If you're looking for a makhoe spot or a place for seafood snacks and draft beer around Samgakji Station or Yongridan-gil, Joseonmakhae is worth a visit :)
