I'm not a fan of plain, mild short rib meat. I love the marinated, salty kind that's a rice thief 🩷 So I went to Daehwa Sutbul Garden Siheung Janggok Branch (대화숯불가든 시흥장곡점), whose main branch is in Gyeongju, and where they pile garlic marinade on the meat right at the table, Gyeongju style. Seriously tasty. Four adults, ₩150,000 blown, ^^ I got part of it discounted but still paid about ₩100,000 myself, and here's my yummy review, hoho

Exterior and the Gyeongju main branch

Daehwa Sutbul Garden Siheung Janggok Branch is in the Janghyeon Yuseung Hannaedeul First Park shopping arcade!! So you park in the First Park underground garage!! And when I looked up where the main branch is, it really is in Gyeongju!!! I'm definitely visiting the main branch next time I'm in Gyeongju, hoho
Interior seating and the self-serve bar

The tables have dividers between them. I love places with dividers like this. They don't block the noise, but you still get that enclosed feeling. Also great for leaning on, hehe

Along the wall there are sofa seats for four. The mood is full of old-fashioned Korean charm~ They captured the Gyeongju feel well, haha

And the self-serve bar!!

Lots of variety and very filling~
Set menu lineup and prices

They say Daehwa uses only top-grade beef, wagyu equivalent to Korean hanwoo 1++ grade!! And that beef is tossed in Gyeongju-style marinade as short rib meat. I can't wait to try it, hoho

Order a set at Daehwa and you also get kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) + homemade sausage + chicken knee meat + chicken skirt meat + bowl-style ice cream, lol. Honestly the set is huge. There's the half-marinated, half-salted set and the Daehwa Special set, and the Special adds diced skirt steak.
We ordered the half-marinated, half-salted Special Platter (850g) for ₩128,000: 550g of instantly marinated short rib meat + 300g of diced kkotsal (marbled rib-finger meat)!!

The Special Platter is recommended for 3 people, or 4 with small appetites!! Of course we're four people with big appetites ^^ but we planned to eat a ton of other sides ^^ The market-style kalguksu and the bowl ice cream that come free with the set are brought out whenever you ask the staff!!
Also, when you order a set you can add a plate of yukhoe (beef tartare) for ₩5,900 ^^ Obviously ordered it, ha
Events and ₩1,900 highballs
Daehwa Sutbul Garden Siheung Janggok Branch also has insanely generous events.
- Receipt review: 10 sweet shrimp
- Sign up for notifications: tomato highball
- Naver reservation: coupon for a free perilla-style chamnamul yukhoe
- Naver reservation: free corkage coupon
Crazy..... Can they even make a profit here? lol. Seriously, a glass of wine is ₩1,900 and a highball is ₩1,900, hahahaha. Fancier highballs are ₩2,900–4,900. Was this really a possible price... unlimited highball mode, no?! lol
Anyway, for sides we ordered crab roe stew (₩6,500), toha-jeot fried rice (₩6,500) and yangpuni bibimbap (₩3,500). Perfect ^.^~ Let the carb party begin ^^
Side dishes and the default seaweed soup
The banchan (side dish) spread at Daehwa is big, so I'm super satisfied.. and there are even tortillas!!! Plus salsa, haha, so you can enjoy beef in a pretty exotic way, you know?

And the seaweed soup that comes by default. Usually default seaweed soup is just seaweed, right,,? The seaweed soup at Daehwa has meat in it, lol. Beef fat floating on top, amazing, right lol
Ta-daa, the charcoal arrives~~

How do Gyeongju-style garlic short rib meat and diced kkotsal taste?
Finally, the shining boss arrives. Short rib meat tossed in Gyeongju-style marinade loaded with garlic, plus my beloved diced kkotsal. I could sense the juicy richness even before grilling...
Then the homemade sausage, chicken knee meat and chicken skirt meat came out, lol. I'm a knee cartilage lover so I'm so looking forward to that crunchy feel, hoho. The sad thing about garlic is that I wish it wouldn't fall into the fire pit, but it vanishes into the coals, so sad ㅠ Still, the garlic that survives stuck to the meat is so good hahaha

Ahh... see the marbling ㅠㅠㅠ Fat and lean are nicely mixed, and when you roll it gently on all six sides and take a bite, the juices flow out... I was drooling even before it was cooked.

The marinade burns, so we grilled the diced kkotsal first. The outside picks up charcoal aroma while the inside stays moist and full of juice.. juices spread with every bite, and the beefy flavor was totally my style ㅠㅠ Roll it gently so the juices don't escape.

It's good on its own, but also great with meat on a tortilla with pickled chili peppers. I added a little salsa, and ahh, the tangy pickled chili with the meat is just insane ㅠ

When you're about halfway through, put on the garlic short rib meat!! Garlic, please don't fall ㅠ We grilled the sausage too. Sausage is obviously good, ha, but the stars of Daehwa are the short ribs and diced kkotsal.. no comparison.

The marinated short rib meat isn't tough. And it's pleasantly salty, a real rice thief.. We'd already ordered yeolmu (young radish) yangpuni bibimbap and toha-jeot fried rice, but we couldn't not order white rice. Not eating this rib meat on white rice should be illegal..
The marinade that survives on the meat, the spicy sauce and the wasabi together are seriously amazing.. That was my favorite combo, and everyone else can eat to their own taste..

The short rib meat isn't tough and has a nice texture, which I love even more.. ㅠㅠ Honestly short rib meat is a cut I don't like much because it lacks a bit of nutty richness..? But marinated like this, it fills in that gap, and I love that, hehe
Chicken knee meat and chicken skirt meat from the set
I grilled and tried both the chicken skirt meat and chicken knee meat. The skirt meat is of course tender, but my pick is the knee meat.. chewy and crunchy, ahh ㅠㅠ the texture is totally my taste!! Also, being smaller than beef, it picks up more charcoal aroma, so it's even tastier... Since beef is so rich, the grilled chicken is a pretty light way to eat, haha
Are the side dishes worth ordering?
Don't underestimate the sides, the sides at Daehwa are insanely good too.

Set add-on yukhoe, ₩5,900
The yukhoe added to the set for ₩5,900 came as chamnamul (pimpinella herb) yukhoe. It's really just a taste-sized portion, lol, but the four of us shared it nicely, one bite each, haha. The owner is clearly a learned person, because bitter chamnamul and yukhoe go so well together. I really love this combo, and here it was.. soft and nutty... Add it to your set for only ₩5,900, definitely order the taster yukhoe ㅠㅠ So delicious ㅠㅠ

Yangpuni bibimbap ₩3,500 and crab roe stew ₩6,500
Why is the yangpuni (big metal bowl) bibimbap so good ㅠ It's only ₩3,500 ㅠ The yeolmu kimchi is already refreshing and delicious, and with seaweed flakes, sesame and gochujang mixed in, it's seriously. Delicious.
Then the crab roe stew arrived. Wait, crab roe goes into a stew?? This was a real delicacy. The snow crab aroma is alive, with a rich doenjang (soybean paste) flavor and the spiciness really comes through.

Yangpuni bibimbap and crab roe stew, this pair.. completely blocks any richness the beef might have. There's no time to feel greasy. It's just delicious.. lol. Bibimbap plus crab roe is the strongest combo.

Toha-jeot fried rice ₩6,500: too salty?
The never-ending blessing of sides: toha-jeot (freshwater shrimp salted seafood) fried rice. Toha-jeot is salted freshwater shrimp!! And, huh?? It isn't salty. I thought a salted-seafood fried rice would be salty, but it was the most lightly seasoned of everything at Daehwa. That made it even more charming. The more you chew, the nuttier and more savory it gets. And the portion is seriously generous lol. The carb party was crazy..
Finishing the set: kalguksu and bowl ice cream
When it's about time to wrap up, I shout "Kalguksu please!!" lol. Ah, this is seriously amazing lol. Rich anchovy broth... the broth was so good I drained it. If you're too full for the noodles, at least taste the kalguksu broth.. the broth is the real deal ㅠ.ㅠ
And the ice cream to finish, done lol. A refreshing palate cleanser lol. I felt like I'd burst, but the ice cream still went in lol
Overall verdict on Daehwa Sutbul Garden Siheung Janggok Branch
- ✅ Varied set lineup: pass
- ✅ Short rib meat is a rice thief
- ✅ Diced kkotsal full of juice
- ✅ All the side dishes: pass
- ✅ Very satisfied from start to dessert finish
The Daehwa set menu really felt well put together, lol. Add a carb-side party on top and I felt like a total pig, but I think there's no better place for a group meal in Janggok-dong, lol. I left very satisfied, hoho
