Wondang noodle restaurant, off-peak lunch: Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu

This is my review of Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, a Wondang restaurant known for great kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup), makguksu, and buckwheat pancakes.

Where is Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu? Hours and parking

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is at 1128 Hoguk-ro, Deogyang-gu, Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do (187-6 Wondang-dong). It's closed every Monday and open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:00 to 20:30 (last order 20:00), with no break time. Free parking is available.

I went for a light lunch at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, a well-known Wondang spot for kalguksu and makguksu.

Having its own parking lot made parking easy. It's such a famous makguksu spot in Wondang, Goyang that the place gets busy during the lunch peak.

How quiet is Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu after the lunch peak?

Visiting past the lunch peak, I was able to eat in a pretty quiet dining room at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu. The interior was clean and there were group tables too, making it a great option for a family gathering after a quick trip to the outskirts.

The self-serve bar was kept neat and tidy. Just a heads-up that both water and buckwheat tea are self-serve. Buckwheat chips are also sold for ₩5,000, a good pick if you want a light savory snack.

I ordered the hot, nutty perilla buckwheat kalguksu, the bibim makguksu that's especially famous here, and a side of buckwheat pancake. The prices overall were reasonable, making it a Wondang restaurant you can eat at without worrying about the bill.

Perilla buckwheat kalguksu with ongsimi (rice dumplings), 11,000 won

The perilla buckwheat kalguksu is ₩11,000, a warm dish with a nutty perilla broth. Everything I ordered was delicious, but this one especially was a hearty, warming pick for the chillier weather these days.

The perilla kalguksu also came with really chewy ongsimi, and the buckwheat kalguksu noodles in particular were wonderfully chewy and tasty. It had the quality of a dish you'd expect from a trip out to Gapyeong or Gangwon-do, without having to travel that far.

Is the bibim makguksu spicy? A mild, easy bowl

Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu's bibim makguksu is ₩11,000, a buckwheat makguksu that needs no introduction.

The buckwheat noodles were delicious again, and personally I really appreciated that the seasoning wasn't overpowering. It wasn't very spicy or intense, making it a makguksu that would appeal to just about anyone's taste.

Two buckwheat pancakes, 9,000 won: sweeter the more you chew

The buckwheat pancake is ₩9,000 and came out as two pieces like this. This buckwheat pancake was also very satisfying.

Maybe because it had so much buckwheat in it, the buckwheat aroma was wonderful. The first bite brought the characteristic slight bitterness of buckwheat, and the more I chewed, a subtle sweetness came through, which made it really delicious.
