Where is Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu? Nakta-gogae in Goyang
Makguksu (buckwheat noodles) is one of Gangwon-do's signature dishes! But these days there are plenty of places in other regions serving delicious makguksu too. Let me introduce a spot in Goyang that's known as a makguksu hotspot: Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu. It's located at Nakta-gogae, where there are restaurants scattered all around.

The interior of Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu, full of dishes made with buckwheat — which has all kinds of health benefits — was clean and tidy. There are plenty of tables, so it can handle group get-togethers too.

Menu and ingredient origins: all domestic except pork and chili powder
Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu's menu includes mul-makguksu, bibim-makguksu, suyuk, buckwheat pancake, and mandu, plus on-makguksu and perilla buckwheat kalguksu. I love perilla, so I was really looking forward to the perilla buckwheat kalguksu haha. Suyuk can also be ordered as a half-plate, and mandu comes in meat, kimchi, or shrimp — you can also order a meat-and-kimchi half-and-half. With both cold and warm dishes on offer, it's a place you can enjoy a good meal year-round.

The origins of the ingredients used at Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu are also posted openly. Everything is domestically sourced except the pork and chili powder. Amazing!!

Buckwheat noodle water and the free barley rice
Buckwheat tea is also available. I had a cup of this good-for-you tea while waiting for the food haha. It's called myeonsu (noodle water) — since it's the water buckwheat noodles were boiled in, it tasted exactly like buckwheat tea from a teabag. If I hadn't known, I would've just assumed they'd brewed buckwheat tea separately for us.

After ordering, they bring out side dishes and barley rice. The barley rice is complimentary!! It's so nice when a makguksu place gives you barley rice too.

Sesame oil and gochujang (red chili paste) are also set out on the table.

Mixing in some yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) makes it even more delicious. It's a great appetizer, this barley rice haha.

What we ordered: mul-makguksu, perilla buckwheat kalguksu, half-and-half mandu
While we were eating the barley rice, our ordered food started coming out. What I ordered was mul-makguksu, perilla buckwheat kalguksu, and half-and-half mandu.

Half-and-half mandu with buckwheat wrappers
The mandu arrived first! Steamed mandu comes in a set of 5. Since I ordered half-and-half, I got 3 meat and 2 kimchi. Made with buckwheat flour wrappers, they're even a different color. Since it's buckwheat instead of wheat flour, it feels healthier too.

The mandu were packed full inside — good dipped in the seasoning sauce or eaten plain. As a meat lover, I still prefer the meat mandu.

Mul-makguksu: no extra noodles, so order the large size
Mul-makguksu came out next, topped with egg. There was also seaweed flakes and perilla seed powder mixed in, so mixing it all together gave a flavor unique to Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu. In the middle of summer, this cold mul-makguksu would really make you forget the heat. Also, noodle dishes can be ordered large. Since there's no add-on noodle option, big eaters should order large from the start.

Perilla buckwheat kalguksu, ongsimi (rice dough balls) included
Last up, the perilla buckwheat kalguksu! As expected, it's delicious. And best of all, it even had ongsimi (chewy rice balls) in it. If they had ongsimi as a separate menu item, I'd probably order it. As the weather gets colder, this perilla buckwheat kalguksu would be a great way to warm up.

I think I understand why Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu has become known as a makguksu hotspot in Goyang. I hope everyone gets to enjoy buckwheat dishes and grow even healthier.

Buckwheat chips and pancake mix at the entrance, and how is parking?
At the entrance, buckwheat chips, pancake mix, and more are also for sale. Bongpyeong Gohyang Makguksu is a place where you can try all kinds of buckwheat dishes. The parking lot is spacious too, so there's no need to worry about parking, and the traffic getting there wasn't bad either. Next time I'll have to try the bibim-makguksu haha.
