Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch (만동제과 연남점) is a bakery on Yeonhui-ro in Seodaemun, Seoul, near Exit 3 of Hongik Univ. Station, best known for its garlic baguette. On a weekday visit with no wait, the writer tasted the samples staff kept handing out and chose four breads: garlic baguette, bacon ciabatta, injeolmi and walnut. Because you can sample before choosing, Mandong Jegwa is a good pick for anyone who wants to try several breads in Yeonnam-dong.

Hongdae Chinese restaurant: 40-minute lunch wait & parking, Seodamheon

Seodamheon Hongdae Main Branch (서담헌 홍대본점) is a hanok-style Chinese restaurant on Yeonhui-ro 1-gil in Mapo, Seoul, that blends Korean and Chinese cooking. On a weekday lunch, the writer parked in a public lot, waited about 40 minutes and ordered samjjamyeon, yuringi (fried chicken in soy-vinegar sauce) and dongpo pork. The top pick was samjjamyeon, 10mm knife-cut noodles eaten with a mix of smoky fire-wok jjamppong and jjajang. Register for the waitlist in advance, and Seodamheon Hongdae Main Branch is a great place for Chinese food with a twist.

Tonkatsu in Geomdan, Incheon: no weekday wait, white kimchi, HOKATSU

HOKATSU is a tonkatsu (pork cutlet) restaurant in the Holyland building on Seogot-ro in Geomdan, Incheon, open for over 10 years and reportedly named in the 2026 Blue Ribbon Survey. Around 1 PM on a weekday, the writer walked into HOKATSU with no reservation and no wait, then ordered the jumbo brazier-grilled Hogyu Katsu, grilled over a butter brazier, and the Popular 3-Katsu platter, where each cutlet was tasty in its own way. HOKATSU is an easy recommendation for tonkatsu in Geomdan New Town, even with young kids.

Bucheon seolleongtang with dipping sauce and QR prize event: Hanchon

Hanchon Seolleongtang Bucheon Kkachiul Station Branch is a seolleongtang (ox bone soup) restaurant near Kkachiul Station in Jak-dong, Ojeong-gu, Bucheon. The writer took home a fresh cream castella (castella with cream ₩9,700, plain castella ₩8,700) and ate it as a meal after a late lunch, enjoying the fluffy, not-too-sweet sponge and the generous cream filled on the spot. Jinsim Castella Bucheon is worth a visit for anyone after a less-sweet castella or a dessert for thank-you gifts and group gifts.

Sinjungdong stroller-friendly Korean set meal, nurungji: Gim Myeongju

Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang Sinjungdong Branch (김명주뜰안채밥상 중동점) is a home-style Korean set meal restaurant near Sinjungdong Station in Bucheon, Gyeonggi, that cooks pot rice from hwangmi (yellow rice) milled the same day. The writer came with her husband and their baby's stroller, ordered the Tteuranchae Bapsang for 2 plus a jjukkumi bokkeum (spicy stir-fried baby octopus), and finished with young radish kimchi and barley rice bibimbap from the self-bar and nurungji (scorched rice) from the pot. With a spacious dining room, private rooms and a 3rd-floor group hall, Gim Myeongju Tteuranchae Bapsang is a very satisfying choice for family meals and gatherings.
