Songdo salt bread café: decaf Americano, plain vs castella, Cozy Bear

In short

Cafe Cozy Bear Salt Bread Bakery Songdo Hagwonga Branch is a salt bread bakery café on the corner ground floor of a building on Haedoji-ro in Yeonsu, Incheon. The writer ordered a decaf Americano and a Cozy Latte with plain salt bread and castella salt bread to compare them, and the nutty decaf Americano cleanly balanced the salty, buttery flavor of the salt bread. Cozy Bear is a good Songdo bakery café for salt bread with coffee or for picking up bread as a gift.

Cozy Bear's coffee menu and signature drinks

Cozy Bear drink and salt bread menu board

At a bakery café, it's not just the bread; the coffee you pair with it matters too. Salt bread in particular has a rich buttery flavor, so the combination with coffee can't be ignored. Cozy Bear reportedly uses beans roasted together with a national-team barista and prepares coffee that suits salt bread.

There are plenty of drinks, from Americanos and lattes onward, and the vanilla drinks reportedly use house-made vanilla syrup. For an extra charge you can switch to decaf or oat milk. The signature drinks are the vanilla bean cream latte, Valrhona chocolate milk and the Cozy Latte. There are also non-coffee options like strawberry milk, chocolate milk, iced tea ade and teas, so it seems like a good place to bring kids.

Cozy Bear salt bread flavors and ingredients

There are five kinds of salt bread (소금빵, a salted butter roll): plain, ang-butter (red bean and butter), garlic, castella and potato. Salt bread looks simple, but what matters is the harmony of buttery richness, saltiness and texture. To bring out the flavor, Cozy Bear reportedly uses French fermented butter and Guérande sea salt, with French flour in the dough.

The lineup is varied: the basic plain, ang-butter salt bread with red bean paste made in the shop, garlic, castella and potato. If you like a plain, mild salt bread, go for the plain; if you want something sweet or a different flavor, you can pick ang-butter, garlic or castella.

How did the plain and castella salt bread taste different?

I ordered a decaf Americano, a Cozy Latte, plain salt bread and castella salt bread. The plain one was nutty and mild, with deep butter flavor. I also tasted a faint sweetness in the butter that went nicely with the salty notes.

The castella salt bread has cream inside, so it was moister and sweeter than the plain. If the plain is all about the nutty, salty butter, the castella adds the soft texture and sweetness of cream.

Do the Cozy Latte and decaf Americano go with salt bread?

The Cozy Latte felt a little different from an ordinary café latte. Rather than light and clean, it was thick and heavy in texture, with a sweet taste. The creaminess and coffee flavor blended together and went down smoothly. It was closer to sweet and rich than the nutty taste you usually expect from a latte.

The decaf Americano had a nice nutty flavor that suited my taste. It worked especially well with the salt bread, as if the Americano cleanly supported the salty, buttery flavor. It also went well with the sweet castella salt bread, so bread and coffee make a good pair here.
