Gongdeok duck restaurant for summer stamina food: Gongjung Dodeok

In short

Gongjung Dodeok is a duck restaurant in the Gongdeok area of Mapo, Seoul, a 5-minute walk from Daeheung Station Exit 3. For malbok, the last of Korea's three hottest days, the writer skipped samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) and ordered the Gongjung half-and-half set at 69,000 won and the barley shrimp and minari pancake at 22,000 won, tasting seasoned jumulleok duck, plain roast duck and the duck potato stew (gonggamtang) that comes with the set. With hanok-style interiors, private rooms and group tables, Gongjung Dodeok suits both a summer stamina meal and a get-together.

Basic side dishes: pickles, radish wrap, perilla leaves, green onion kimchi

Signature spread of duck dishes at Gongjung Dodeok

As the heat wave rolled on and malbok, the last of Korea's dog days, approached, I went looking for a different kind of body-boosting meal and ended up eating duck at Gongjung Dodeok. Summer heat kills your appetite and wears you out fast, and that's exactly when you need something hearty and warming to recharge. Spoiler: duck was the right call. Here's my review.

Where is Gongjung Dodeok, and where can you park?

People usually eat samgyetang (ginseng chicken soup) on the three dog days, but I decided to try duck for my malbok recovery meal instead, something a bit different.

The exterior alone had a certain presence, and the atmosphere stood out from the start.

Inside, Gongjung Dodeok's interior is a modern reinterpretation of a Joseon-era hanok restaurant mood, which really caught my eye,

and it made the meal feel that much more atmospheric.

The place has everything: rooms for 6–10, group seating for 4–30, couple seats, a terrace, and standard tables, making it suitable for company dinners, family gatherings, dates, all kinds of occasions.

What comes in the 69,000-won Gongjung half-and-half set?

The basic side dishes were pickles, radish wraps, perilla leaves, sauce, and green onion kimchi,

The duck potato stew comes free, and honestly, it's amazing.

The Gongjung half-and-half set, 69,000 won, comes with deeply seasoned jumulleok on one side, plain roast duck on the other, plus minari and duck potato stew (gonggamtang).

Instead of just one duck dish, you get jumulleok all the way to a soup dish, so there was plenty of variety,

and the jumulleok was well-seasoned with a real depth of savory flavor,

and since it's half-and-half, you can switch back and forth between flavors instead of getting tired of just one, so it stayed delicious to the last bite.

Is the duck potato stew (gonggamtang) a good summer stamina dish?

In the summer heat you naturally crave only cold, refreshing things, but eating this hot, steaming soup instead actually warmed me up from the inside and genuinely felt like a proper recovery meal,

and the duck's clean flavor paired so well with the broth's richness that I couldn't stop eating.

A piece of plain roasted duck

Just look at that color — already looks delicious.

I wondered what duck potato stew would even taste like, since gamjatang (potato stew) usually means pork, so making it with duck was a fun twist, and one bite made me feel full and satisfied — this really was a proper health food.

It was delicious plain,

and even richer with the sauce or wrapped in perilla leaves. Big perilla wraps are the way to go.

Barley shrimp and minari pancake, 22,000 won

A plate of barley shrimp minari pancake

The barley shrimp minari pancake, 22,000 won, is a savory pancake where barley shrimp and minari (water dropwort) aromas come together.

The fragrant minari and the nuttiness of the barley shrimp balanced each other so well that I immediately started craving makgeolli (rice wine),

and it was so crispy I ended up eating it like a snack.
