Korean BBQ in Saha, Busan: first lotus-leaf rice at Yukganmyeongga
In short
Yukganmyeongga (육간명가) is a Korean charcoal-grill restaurant for hanwoo beef and pork on Hasinjungang-ro in Saha, Busan, which also serves hanjeongsik-style set meals. On a weekday evening, the writer and her husband ordered two 480°C fire-oven pork galbi lotus-leaf rice sets at ₩19,000 per person. The lotus-leaf rice, her first, was chewy, somewhere between sticky rice and yakbap (sweet rice with nuts and dates), with a gentle lotus-leaf aroma. Verdict: because no one has to grill the meat, Yukganmyeongga makes for an unhurried meal with plenty of time to talk.

My husband and I went to Yukganmyeongga (육간명가) in Saha, Busan. This time we ordered the pork galbi (marinated pork ribs) lotus-leaf rice set, grilled in a 480°C fire oven! For ₩19,000 per person, you get a whole table of Korean dishes, pork galbi included.
Honestly, this was my first time ever eating lotus-leaf rice. So here's my honest review of Yukganmyeongga on a weekday evening.
Parking and the weekday evening atmosphere at Yukganmyeongga

Yukganmyeongga has its own parking lot on the 1st floor, and you take the elevator up to the 2nd floor. We visited around 7 pm on a weekday, and there were quite a few empty seats at that hour.

Yukganmyeongga is a charcoal-grill place for Korean beef (hanwoo) and pork, but it also has set menus laid out generously like a hanjeongsik (Korean full-course meal). You can order them at dinner as well as lunch, so it'd be a good stop after work too.

Unusually, warm tea is served before the meal. A sip or two was lovely for soothing the stomach. If you'd rather have cold water, just ask the staff and they'll bring bottled water!
We ordered two portions of the pork galbi set, ₩38,000 in total! I was so excited to find out what it would taste like, and even the wait for the food was thrilling, haha.
Pork galbi lotus-leaf rice set: price and what comes with it

The pork galbi lotus-leaf rice set at Yukganmyeongga is ₩19,000 per person, with side dishes like japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), three-color namul (seasoned vegetables) and cabbage salad, plus fire-oven pork galbi and lotus-leaf rice. About 10 minutes after we ordered, the side dishes started arriving one by one and the table filled up quickly. Japchae, namul, cabbage salad, and then finally the main event, the pork galbi, came out.
Both portions came on a single plate, with big, wide slabs of meat laid out. It caught my eye right from the look of it.

How does the 480°C fire-oven pork galbi taste?
Maybe because it's cooked in a 480°C fire oven, the outside of the pork galbi was nicely crisp, and it had none of that gamey pork smell.

At a regular Korean BBQ place, you're busy grilling and flipping, so it's hard to focus on eating, right? Here the galbi arrives fully cooked, so you just snip it into bite-size pieces with scissors and you're done! I loved being able to eat at a relaxed pace and chat with my husband!
What does lotus-leaf rice taste like? A first-timer's review

What I was most curious about that day was the lotus-leaf rice! I'd often seen the name on menus at fancy hanjeongsik restaurants, and I was finally getting to try it. The moment I saw the lotus leaf, it reminded me of Wangnun the Frog from a cartoon I watched as a kid, haha.

When I gently unfolded the layered lotus leaf, a hot lump of rice was tucked inside, with steam rising up! Inside the rice were jujubes, lotus root, chestnuts, black rice, ginkgo nuts, walnuts and other nuts and grains, nicely mixed through.

When I scooped up a spoonful, the grains didn't fall apart loosely; they were sticky enough to come up in one clump. Chewy and springy, I'd say the texture sits somewhere between sticky rice and yakbap (sweet nutty rice).
The rice itself isn't strongly seasoned, and the more I chewed, the more I noticed a faint lotus-leaf aroma, which was fascinating. When it felt a little bland, I put a piece of pork galbi on top, and eating it with the namul in between made the seasoning just right!
Is Yukganmyeongga a good place for a family meeting?

I only found out once I got there, but the staff told me Yukganmyeongga is a popular spot for sangyeonrye (the formal first meeting of two families before a wedding). At the back there are separate private rooms called Byeolchae and Sarangchae. Since it's the first time both families meet, you could have a cozy meal and conversation without worrying about the people around you.
Overall verdict
If you're looking for a hanjeongsik or Korean BBQ restaurant for lunch in Saha, Busan, Yukganmyeongga is a good choice. The lotus-leaf rice set we had is ₩19,000 per person and comes generously, from the fire-oven pork galbi to the lotus-leaf rice, and you can order it at both lunch and dinner.
Each side dish was neatly presented too, so even a single meal felt like being properly treated. Next time I'd like to try the other set menus.
