Korean pub near Gunja Station: pork bones & minari jeon at Saechamjip

In short

Saechamjip (새참집 군자직영점) is a Korean pub on the 2nd floor near Gunja Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. Two friends shared yuja smoothie makgeolli, stone-plate grilled pork bones with aged white kimchi (cheese added) and whole-shrimp minari jeon (water dropwort pancake), with a free muk-sabal (acorn jelly soup) and partitioned seats that make group outings easy. Main photo of Saechamjip, a Korean pub near Gunja Station

I drink less these days, so when I do go out for a drink, I look for a place with really good food to go with it. This time I was meeting a friend near Gunja Station and went to Saechamjip (새참집 군자직영점), which I'd heard has good anju (food to go with drinks).

Visiting Saechamjip

These days the quality of the anju decides the mood of the whole get-together :) When you're focused on good food, you don't need many words, right? Saechamjip near Gunja Station has a solid Korean menu, and the seating feels fairly private, so it worked well as a meeting spot.

Do you need a reservation at Saechamjip?

Saechamjip can have a wait at popular times, so if you're going with a group, I recommend booking through Naver first.

What are the atmosphere and seating like near Gunja Station?

Saechamjip is 5 minutes from Gunja Station, so it's an easy place to arrange to meet. It's on the 2nd floor, and the inside is fairly clean.

The seating layout is spacious overall, and even though these aren't private rooms, there are partitions and hanging blinds here and there, so it felt more private than I expected.

Saechamjip restroom stocked with hygiene items

The restroom was tidy too. Some pub restrooms are poorly kept, but Saechamjip even had hygiene items like mouthwash and disposable floss, so it felt carefully managed.

What we ordered at Saechamjip

We ordered three things this day. For the smoothie makgeolli (Korean rice wine) I picked yuja (citron) flavor, and for the main dishes we got the stone-plate bone-in pork with aged white kimchi and the whole-shrimp minari (water dropwort) jeon (savory pancake).

I chose things that work as a meal too :)

Starting with the free muk soup

Chilled muk soup served as a starter

Saechamjip brings out muk-sabal (chilled acorn jelly soup) first as part of the basic setup. It suited the hot weather really well. It was cool and clean-tasting, great for getting your appetite going, and we had a refill, so we ate it twice.

Hangover drinks provided for each person

They also had hangover drinks ready, one for each person. It's a small detail, but as a customer it really stuck with me. Overall it gave off a "enjoy your food and head home comfortably" feeling, which I liked.

Stone-plate bone-in pork with white kimchi: how was the cheese add-on?

Saechamjip's stone-plate bone-in pork with aged white kimchi is apparently boiled for 48 hours. The bone-in pork and the smoothie makgeolli came out first, and the pork definitely looked like the main dish right away. The meat was thick and generous.

They gave us plastic gloves and tongs ahead of time, so tearing into it was easy. We added cheese, and wrapping the well-seasoned meat in cheese was the best! Honestly, we hardly talked while eating the pork. We were too busy pulling off meat, dipping it in cheese, and eating the seasoned bits.

The seasoning soaks into the meat well, so if you like bone-in pork, definitely go.

Yuja smoothie makgeolli and whole-shrimp minari jeon

Yuja smoothie makgeolli in a jar

I ordered Saechamjip's jar-style smoothie makgeolli in yuja flavor. When I poured it into a glass, I could feel yuja pulp in it, and the sweetness was naturally sweet, which I liked.

The fresh tang of yuja went impressively well with the Korean anju.

Crispy whole-shrimp minari jeon

The whole-shrimp minari jeon wins on looks alone. The crispiness lasted all the way through, and the shrimp was plump and satisfying to bite. I even cut off just the minari part and ate it on its own, and it still had a light seasoning, with the minari aroma and nuttiness coming through. It felt less like an ordinary jeon and more like airy, crisp Japanese tempura.

Jeon often goes soggy as time passes, but this one stayed crisp to the end, so I was very satisfied.

Why I recommend Saechamjip for a group drink near Gunja Station

Overall, Saechamjip's food, seating and atmosphere all suit get-togethers. Groups are welcome, and the seats are laid out widely, so I think it would be fine even with a big party. I recommend it to anyone looking for a Korean pub or a private-room bar near Gunja Station..!

There's hearty food like the bone-in pork and shareable dishes like the minari jeon, so I think it works well for gatherings. It's less a place for just light snacks and more a Korean pub where you can have a meal and talk. If you're looking for a good bar for a group near Gunja Station, I recommend checking out Saechamjip :)
