Hi, it's Nyeong! Naengmyeon (cold noodles) is one of the first foods that comes to mind when you think of Jinju. On a sweltering summer day, a bowl cools you down and wakes up your appetite. Jinju naengmyeon has a charm all its own, different from Pyongyang or Hamhung naengmyeon, and I went to Song Giwon (송기원), a famous spot for it.

Jinju naengmyeon is known for its seafood broth and rich yukjeon (pan-fried beef) topping, and there's even seokkeum naengmyeon, which you only find in Jinju. It's become an annual summer ritual for me, it's just that good ☺️

Sunjo 1800, Nongae 1593, Song Giwon 1997: the unusual menu names
Instead of plain names like mul naengmyeon or bibim naengmyeon, this place uses quirky ones: 'Sunjo 1800' mul naengmyeon, 'Nongae 1593' bibim naengmyeon (spicy mixed noodles) and 'Song Giwon 1997' seokkeum naengmyeon.

Those names made me curious about why naengmyeon is so famous in Jinju, so I did a little searching.
Why is Jinju famous for naengmyeon?
Jinju and nearby Sacheon are close to the sea, so a food culture built on seafood developed there, and combined with buckwheat grown near Jirisan, it shaped today's Jinju naengmyeon style. So Jinju naengmyeon isn't just a cool summer dish. It's a signature local food carrying the region's history and food culture!

What it's like on a summer evening
Song Giwon is said to be a local favorite, well known around Jinju. The exterior isn't flashy and feels like a neighborhood restaurant, but it was crowded with people even in the evening. The photos and autographs on the walls prove it's already a famous spot!! Cool, haha 👍🏻

✔️ The side dishes are house-made napa cabbage kimchi and radish kimchi, and every table has Baekgeumcho and mustard sauce.

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon menu and prices
- ✔️ Sunjo 1800 (mul naengmyeon): ₩13,000
- ✔️ Song Giwon 1997 (seokkeum naengmyeon): ₩14,000
- ✔️ Yukjeon: ₩25,000

How does Sunjo 1800 mul naengmyeon taste?
✔️ Sunjo 1800 (mul naengmyeon), ₩13,000. This is the most basic item. It's cool and clean like any mul naengmyeon, but the seafood broth hit me from the very first sip with a sturdy yet clean flavor ☺️ The pan-fried beef yukjeon mingles with the noodles and adds a rich, mild taste to the cold naengmyeon, which really brings out the savory depth.

What does Song Giwon 1997 seokkeum naengmyeon taste like?
✔️ Song Giwon 1997 (seokkeum naengmyeon), ₩14,000. This is mul naengmyeon and bibim naengmyeon mixed together, a half-and-half style you can only get with Jinju naengmyeon ^^ The sweet spiciness of bibim naengmyeon blends with the mild flavor of mul naengmyeon, which makes it a perfect pick if you can't decide what to order.

The sweet and spicy flavors are really well balanced. The seasoning isn't strong, so you don't get tired of it, it isn't too spicy, and you keep wanting more. Personally, seokkeum naengmyeon is my favorite of the three 😆

Yukjeon for ₩25,000, wrapped in naengmyeon
When you come for Jinju naengmyeon, yukjeon is the side dish you can't skip! It's hard to find at ordinary naengmyeon restaurants, but

Yukjeon is delicious on its own, but whatever their secret is, even the egg coating around the meat is wonderfully savory. You can dip it in the special sauce that comes with it, or wrap the naengmyeon in it like a ssam and eat it in one bite. It's incredibly good.

Is Song Giwon worth a meal on a Jinju trip?
Song Giwon isn't just a place to eat a bowl of naengmyeon. You learn about Jinju's food history too, so you can really feel what makes Jinju naengmyeon special 😄 The menu explains the dishes, and there are notes on the origins and history of Jinju's local food on the tables. I found it meaningful to read and learn while waiting for the food :) In autumn, it would be nice to stop by when you come for the Jinju Lantern Festival! I recommend it as a special meal on your Jinju trip.
