Paldal Jutaek (팔달주택) is a Korean gastropub on Ganmaesan-ro in Paldal-gu, near Suwon Station in Suwon. On a weekday evening date with her husband, the writer shared the Bullae Hanpan: a platter of fire-grilled baby octopus, pork intestines, boneless chicken feet and pork bulgogi, served over a lit fire bowl. She also ordered a side of wheat rice cake tteokbokki and spooned up every drop of its sauce. With generous food, a cozy interior and an outdoor patio, Paldal Jutaek is a great date-night bar near Suwon Station.

Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch is a Jirisan black pork Korean BBQ restaurant right outside Exit 2-1 of Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul. After a Sunday outing to Gwanghwamun and Cheonggyecheon, a family of four had an early dinner of 3 servings of Jirisan black pork neck and five-layer pork belly (ogyeopsal), plus 1 serving of Boseong Nokdon pork belly; the staff grilling service and potato wraps were the highlights. Cham Dwaejitgan is a good choice for a hearty, filling meat dinner with kids in Jongno.

On a Monday evening, a couple ordered 2 servings of the hanwoo mixed gopchang platter at Usim Suwon Main Branch, then added 1 serving of daechang (large intestine) for 3 servings between two. They were happy with the fresh heart, the gopchang packed with creamy filling, the self-bar corn salad and the complimentary soup. Usim Suwon Main Branch is a generous gopchang spot near Suwon Station, so filling that the couple saved the fried rice and kimchi noodles for next time.

Suwon hangover soup for kids, no ox blood or chili: Jeju Eunhuine

Jeju Eunhuine Haejangguk Suwon Ingye Branch (제주은희네해장국 수원인계점) is a Jeju-style restaurant serving haejangguk (hangover soup), offal soup and dombe pork (boiled pork slices) in Ingye-dong, Suwon, near City Hall Station. On a weekend lunch with the kids, the writer ordered the children's haejangguk without seonji (ox blood) or dadaegi (chili paste); the glass noodles and meat were generous enough that each child finished a full bowl of rice, and the husband raved about the offal soup. With parking out front, high chairs and unlimited rice, Jeju Eunhuine Haejangguk is an easy Ingye-dong pick for families with kids.

Jamsilsaenae sashimi restaurant with ice-chilled plates: Namhae Fish

Namhae Fish Jamsilsaenae Branch is an aged-sashimi omakase restaurant in the old Sincheon-dong food alley near Exit 4 of Jamsilsaenae Station in Songpa, Seoul. Over a lunch with her sister that doubled as trip planning, the writer had the reserved kelp-aged sashimi set for about 1 hour: porridge, mulhoe (cold raw fish soup), assorted aged sashimi, tempura, braised flatfish, seafood pasta and beef shabu-shabu. Ice under the plate kept the sashimi cold and fresh to the last piece. Namhae Fish Jamsilsaenae Branch impressed her enough to book it right away for her dad's birthday family gathering.

Suwon school-break family shabu with refill bar tteokbokki: Sodamchon

Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch is a shabu-shabu and Vietnamese spring roll restaurant on Jeongjacheon-ro in Jangan-gu, Suwon. On a school-vacation outing, the family turned away from a packed Starfield Suwon and ordered 1 wagyu spring roll shabu, 1 basic spring roll shabu and a 70g meat add-on for their elementary schooler; kids through elementary school pay ₩10,000 and preschoolers eat free. With split broth, tteokbokki on the refill bar and a café next door for afterwards, Sodamchon Suwon Jeongja Branch covers a whole family meal in one stop.

Gwanggyo café cream latte taste test with peach cake: Café Diaz

Café Diaz Galleria Gwanggyo is a fruit cream cake café in the basement 1 food hall of Galleria Gwanggyo in Suwon, Gyeonggi. After lunch I ordered a peach cream cake slice with two drinks, the signature cream latte and the nut cream latte, and the genoise sponge was packed with milk cream and peach in every layer. Café Diaz is an easy dessert stop before walking to Gwanggyo Lake Park with the rest of your coffee.

West Suwon grilled fish with two kids on a sweltering day: Godeungeo

Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a grilled fish restaurant on Seobu-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi. On a day too hot to grill fish at home, the writer came with her two children and ordered three dishes — grilled bakdae sole, grilled cutlassfish and grilled Atka mackerel — then helped herself to sungnyung and sikhye at the banchan self-bar and instant mixed coffee in the waiting area. The mild seasoning suited the kids, and with after-meal drinks included, Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda works well as a family dinner spot.
