Jinju naengmyeon restaurant packed in August, four dishes: Songgiwon
In short
Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store is a Jinju naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodle) restaurant at 49 Cheonsu-ro in Jinju, Gyeongnam. Arriving well past lunchtime on an August trip, the writer still found every table full with a short wait, and the group shared mul-naengmyeon (Sunjo 1800), seokkeum-naengmyeon (Songgiwon 1997), galbitang (Dongilgaae) and ujeon (beef pancake). For a group tasting Jinju's local dishes on a hot day, Songgiwon made a satisfying one-stop meal.

Traveling around Jinju, there are times you just can't decide what to eat. In August especially, even a short walk in Jinju left me sweating. At times like this, cold noodles are the first thing that come to mind.

So on this Jinju trip, I decided to try Jinju naengmyeon (cold buckwheat noodles). The place I went was Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store.

Since this was just one meal from my Jinju trip, I'll write down my honest impressions from eating there.
Why naengmyeon on an August trip to Jinju?
It was such a hot day that naengmyeon kept coming to mind. The day I visited Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon, I was out and about in the middle of Jinju's peak summer heat.

On this trip I was moving around various spots in Jinju, but the weather was so hot that even picking a lunch spot felt like a chore. I wanted something cold rather than something hot.

Then Jinju naengmyeon came to mind. Since I was in Jinju, I wanted to try the local food too. That's how I ended up at Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon.
Inside Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store: seating and the August wait
When I arrived at Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store, there were way more people waiting than I expected — even though it was well past lunchtime, the place was already full.

I could tell right away it was a famous spot in Jinju. The first thing that caught my eye inside was the clean interior. It was decorated mainly in white and wood tones, giving the whole space a bright, warm feel.

Honestly, when I first walked in I thought it was surprisingly pretty for a naengmyeon restaurant — clean enough that it could pass for a café. The atmosphere made it easy to take photos too, so it was fun to look around while eating.
Above all, the restaurant was spacious with generous gaps between seats, which made it comfortable to sit and eat with a child. When dining out with kids, sitting too close to the next table can make you self-conscious — I liked that this wasn't an issue here.

What we ordered at Songgiwon: mul-naengmyeon, seokkeum-naengmyeon, galbitang and ujeon
At Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon we ordered mul-naengmyeon, seokkeum-naengmyeon, galbitang, and ujeon. Since we were a group, we decided to share several dishes, which meant we got to try galbitang and ujeon along with the naengmyeon.

The dish names are taken from Jinju's history — Sunjo 1800 (mul-naengmyeon), Songgiwon 1997 (seokkeum-naengmyeon), Dongilgaae (galbitang), and Ujeon — so keep these in mind when ordering.

Mul-naengmyeon (Sunjo 1800): how the cold broth tasted
First, the mul-naengmyeon (water-based cold noodles) was perfect for the hot weather. Loosening the noodles into the cold broth and taking a bite felt refreshing all the way through.

I thought this would be the best starting dish for anyone trying Jinju naengmyeon for the first time.

Seokkeum-naengmyeon (Songgiwon 1997): a different kind of bowl
Seokkeum-naengmyeon is mul-naengmyeon with spicy sauce mixed in — literally combining mul-naengmyeon and bibim-naengmyeon. The vibe was totally different from the plain mul-naengmyeon, so it was fun comparing the two.

If you're visiting with a group, I'd recommend splitting an order between mul-naengmyeon and seokkeum-naengmyeon rather than getting just one kind. Everyone can eat to their own taste, and it's fun to compare flavors.

Galbitang (Dongilgaae) and ujeon beef pancake on the side
It felt like a waste to only order naengmyeon, so we also got galbitang and ujeon.

The ujeon (beef pancake) in particular paired really well with the naengmyeon — going from the cold noodles to the warm, savory ujeon changed the whole flow of flavors.

Galbitang was also a solid choice for family members who don't eat naengmyeon.

So if you're visiting with several people, I'd recommend ordering galbitang and ujeon together rather than just naengmyeon, and sharing everything.
At the next table, I noticed a whole family ordering nothing but galbitang. They mentioned that the galbitang here is well known in Jinju too.

Why Songgiwon works on a hot day in Jinju
This time, both the food itself and the timing of the visit lined up well. Wandering around Jinju in the middle of summer and then eating cold naengmyeon really felt like it took the edge off the heat.
When you keep walking on a trip, your energy tends to drop by lunchtime. Having a cool, refreshing meal and then moving on to the next stop gave me the strength to keep going. That made this meal one of the more memorable parts of the Jinju trip.
Who Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon suits best
Having tried it myself, I think this place suits:

- Anyone trying Jinju naengmyeon for the first time
- Anyone looking for a restaurant while traveling in Jinju
- Anyone wanting something cold on a hot day
- Anyone looking for a place to eat with family
- Anyone wanting to try Jinju's local food
If you're traveling in Jinju during summer especially, naengmyeon feels like a pretty good choice. We were genuinely grateful for something cold on such a hot day.

One meal from a Jinju trip: the verdict on Songgiwon
Jinju has plenty to see, but the food is just as unmissable. This time I toured Jinjuseong Fortress, visited Wolasan, and spent some time with my kid at a water playground. And in the middle of it all, I got to try Jinju naengmyeon.
Experiencing these things one by one, my memories of this Jinju trip keep adding up little by little. Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon is one of them. If you're traveling in Jinju on a hot day and craving something cool, Songgiwon Jinju Naengmyeon Direct Store is worth checking out.
If Jinju naengmyeon is new to you like it was for me, I'd recommend trying the yukjeon alongside the noodles.
