Wonju Korean restaurant by Munmak bus stop: pork gukbap and sundae

Singi Arrowroot Naengmyeon & Jjukkumi is a Korean restaurant for jjukkumi (baby octopus), naengmyeon (cold noodles) and gukbap (rice soup), right behind the Munmak bus stop in Wonju, Gangwon. The writer shared a 28,000 won stir-fried jjukkumi for two, a 10,000 won mul naengmyeon and a 9,000 won lean pork gukbap with 3 extra pieces of traditional sundae (Korean blood sausage) for 1,000 won. The complimentary muksabal (acorn jelly in cold broth) cooled the spice. With a 200-pyeong parking lot and room for up to 60 people, Singi Arrowroot Naengmyeon & Jjukkumi is a comfortable pick for group meals.

Sokcho noodle restaurant with perilla buckwheat kalguksu: Topgol

The writer ordered perilla buckwheat makguksu for 13,000 won, a large buckwheat makguksu for 13,000 won and perilla buckwheat kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) for 12,000 won, and found a self-serve bar with extra side dishes and a microwave just for baby food. Sokcho Topgol Makguksu's mild seasoning meant even family members who can't handle spice finished every bowl.

Cheongju Chinese restaurant: extra-large jajangmyeon, Gyodong

Gyodong Jjamppong Yongjeong Branch (교동짬뽕 용정점) is a Chinese restaurant with house-made noodles in Yongjeong-dong, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, Chungbuk. The order was jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup) for 9,000 won at spice level 1, chapssal tangsuyuk (crispy glutinous rice sweet-and-sour pork) for 18,000 won with the sauce on the side for dipping, and jajangmyeon (black bean sauce noodles) for 6,000 won, upgraded to an extra-large portion for 1,000 won more. The writer ordered four slices (chili for 6,500 won, white mushroom for 6,000 won, margherita for 4,500 won and cheese for 4,000 won) with a café latte, vanilla latte, tomato basil ade and Sprite, ordering on the first floor and eating in the glass-walled second-floor hall. Gagas Pizza's chewy dough and mild cheese, topped with Parmesan and hot sauce, kept every slice from getting boring.

Eulwangri seafood restaurant full at 3pm on a weekend: Haesanggung

Haesanggung is an octopus stir-fry and seafood kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant near Eulwangri Beach in Yeongjong, Incheon. Arriving at 3pm on a weekend, the writer found every table taken, then ordered the Haesanggung set for two at 57,000 won — whole octopus pancake, octopus stir-fry, seafood kalguksu and turmeric rice — and mixed somyeon (thin wheat noodles) into the sauce at the end. The stir-fry gets its heat from aged seasoning rather than artificial capsaicin, and the clean seafood kalguksu broth was the best part of the meal.

Tablet-ordered hairtail and mackerel sets in Cheongju: Jeju Badang

Jeju Badang is a Korean restaurant in Gagyeong-dong, Cheongju, specialising in Jeju silver hairtail and grilled mackerel, with all ordering done on T-order tablets. The writer ordered the boneless Jeju hairtail stew with pot rice (23,000 won for one) and the grilled mackerel set with pot rice (17,000 won for one), then ate them with a self-serve bar of more than 15 Korean side dishes and finished the pot rice as scorched-rice tea. For a full fish spread without picking out a single bone, Jeju Badang is the answer.
