Jeju black pork barbecue near Shinhwa World: Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon

Isn't black pork the flower of Jeju? I went out for black pork as a Jeju trip dinner. Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon Shinhwa World Branch, near Shinhwa World! From geun-gogi (large-cut pork portions) to side dishes, I had a proper feast.

Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon Shinhwa World Branch: location, parking, and hours

It's at 2-dong, 1769 Jungsangansseo-ro, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. It's fairly close to Jeju Shinhwa World, so it's handy to keep in mind if you're looking for somewhere to eat around Shinhwa World.

You can park in front of the restaurant, with space for around seven to eight cars. It's open daily from 3:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., with last orders at 9:10 p.m., and is regularly closed every Tuesday. They also run a pickup service, so if driving is awkward or you'd like an easy dinner, I recommend checking ahead about pickup.

Banchan and glass noodle cucumber salad

When you order pork, the basic banchan (small side dishes) include pickled perilla leaves, pickled radish wraps, pickled onions, and napa cabbage kimchi, along with wrap vegetables, garlic, ssamjang, wasabi, and shredded scallions. I loved that there were so many ways to pair things with the meat. I especially love having it with wasabi, so this was right up my alley!

And the glass noodle cucumber salad is a side dish I really want to recommend! It combines crisp cucumber with bouncy, chewy glass noodles, and its sweet-tangy, spicy kick really wakes up your appetite! A bite whenever the pork started to feel rich made my mouth feel refreshed, so I was very glad I ordered it as a side haha.

At Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon Shinhwa World Branch, the owner pre-grills the meat personally before bringing it out. First, they show you the ordered meat measured by geun, then take it away to pre-grill over charcoal. The pre-grilled pork is then brought out cut by cut, in order haha.

Ooh, this volcano steamed egg is insane. Seriously, why is steamed egg ordered at a barbecue restaurant always this delicious...? The seasoning wasn't too strong, just perfectly balanced, so it was great to eat between bites of pork.

Pork neck came first, followed by five-layer pork belly, kkodeulsal, and pork skin, all grilled in sequence. Rather than grilling everything from start to finish at once, I could focus on eating, which I really liked haha.

Tender pork neck with meljeot

I started with the pork neck. I wondered whether it might be dry because it was pork neck, but no—it was so tender.... The juices burst out when I bit into it, and it also had that clean, mild flavor unique to pork neck, so I kept reaching for it without feeling weighed down.

Dipping it in the meljeot (Jeju fermented anchovy sauce) they serve really makes the Jeju black pork experience come alive hahaha. You have to eat Jeju meljeot before it truly feels like you've arrived in Jeju.

Kkodeulsal you can't stop reaching for

Kkodeulsal is my absolute favorite cut. The more you chew it, the more nutty flavor comes through, so I just kept picking at it. If you like pork cuts with a pleasantly chewy texture, you'll be completely satisfied haha.

Spicy, savory kimchi stew without the sweetness

And the kimchi stew! At first, ₩9,000 felt a little pricey for a side, but once it arrived, it made total sense. I'm the kind of person who always worries that stew at a barbecue restaurant will be sweet... I worried this time too, but what a success. It wasn't sweet, and it leaned spicy and savory. Such a rice thief hahaha. Move over, kimchi stew specialists. After eating the pork, I mixed rice into the stew too, and it disappeared in no time~~~

How was it for a Jeju trip dinner?

This visit to Heukdonsibaekdonmyeon was easier because the pork arrived pre-grilled, so I didn't have to grill it myself, and it was fun tasting the cuts from pork neck through five-layer pork belly and pork skin! The chewy kkodeulsal, sweet-tangy glass noodle cucumber salad, and generous kimchi stew especially stayed with me haha. A side-dish spot you can't go wrong with!
