If you're heading to Gujwa-eup on Jeju's east side, there's a lot of local food you have to try. I heard about a rural-style dining space that ties together local produce and culture into a 13-dish Jeju set meal, so I went to check it out. Today's spot is a second-generation restaurant in Jongdal-ri, Gujwa, known for its local specialties and hearty spread — Jongdal Sudatteul (종달수다뜰)!

Where is Jongdal Sudatteul, and is there parking?
Jongdal Sudatteul sits at 8 Yongnuni-oreum-ro, Gujwa-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju, right along Olle Trail 1. There's a huge dedicated parking lot right next to it 👍🏻

Here's the view of the whole place 🌸🍃 With its grassy lawn and stone paths, it really captures the quiet, cozy feel of a rural village in Jongdal-ri. Since it's on Olle Trail 1, where the sea, oreum (volcanic hills), and fields all come together, it also looks like a great stop for a meal mid-hike ⛰️

Inside Jongdal Sudatteul and its self-serve side dish bar
Here's the inside of Jongdal Sudatteul ✨ The interior is neatly done up in wood tones, with generous space between tables, so the whole atmosphere feels relaxed and comfortable. The warm sunlight pouring in through the big windows made me feel at ease the whole meal ☀️ There's a tidy self-serve bar where you can add more banchan to your taste, and apparently this place has had visits from celebrities like Shin Dong-yup and Han Ji-hye 📺
How much is the Jeju set meal for two?
I ordered the Jeju set meal for two at Jongdal Sudatteul (₩25,000 per person). There's a wide range of dishes using Jeju specialties, but most guests seem to order the Jeju set meal since it lets you taste pretty much everything Jeju has to offer.
What comes in the 13-dish tray, from namul to grilled hairtail
The Jeju set meal for two (₩25,000 per person) came out right away ✨ Everything from seafood to meat to namul was laid out on a big retro-style tray — a full 13-dish spread of Jeju flavors, all in one place ‼️ The bracken fern namul, eggplant namul, bean sprouts, gochu-doenjang mix, and green onion salad were all seasoned lightly, which really let the Jeju ingredients shine 👏🏻

Grilled hairtail
The thick grilled hairtail was seasoned salty with coarse salt, but oddly enough the fish flesh actually tasted sweet 🫢 Crispy and golden on the outside, the flesh inside was so moist and soft I basically had to eat it with a spoon.

Dombe pork (sliced boiled pork)
The dombe pork (boiled pork served on a wooden cutting board) came out rough-cut and rustic, boiled with zero gaminess and perfectly tender — you really get its true value when you dip it in the coarse salt served alongside. Jongdal Sudatteul must use good-quality salt, because even eating the pork with just salt gave it a great savory depth 🤭

Braised mackerel
The braised mackerel came in a slightly spicy, well-reduced sauce along with well-cooked kimchi. Wrap the plump mackerel flesh in the kimchi and eat it with rice, and it's a total rice thief 🥷

Abalone jang
The abalone jang (abalone marinated in soy sauce) wasn't too salty — just the right amount of savory saltiness, with a chewy texture that carried great depth of flavor. The abalone pieces were also large and thick, giving a satisfying bite 👍🏻

Soy crab: free refills, and I had three
The soy crab (crab marinated in soy sauce) was packed with meat, with a sweet-salty sauce soaked all the way through — one bite and the soft crab meat just burst out, a true rice thief 🥷🥷 And this rice thief comes with free refills‼️ I figured I couldn't let a chance like that slip by, so I refilled it three times 🤣

Seafood doenjang stew
The seafood doenjang stew was loaded with blue crab and clams, with a broth so clear and refreshing it almost felt like a light soybean soup. It was the essential palate-cleanser between bites throughout the meal 😊 Another great meal today 🙇🏻♀️
Is Jongdal Sudatteul worth a stop on Olle Trail 1?
