Jeju City media art gallery with a nursing room for toddlers: Nohyeong

Planning a Jeju trip and still feeling like it's a bit too hot out, I was looking around for somewhere to go and ended up at Nohyeong Supermarket this time.

Inside Nohyeong Supermarket there's a little general store selling cute Jeju-style trinkets and snacks. I picked up a cat keyring and a squishy toy, and there was a small nursing room off to the side where I could comfortably change our 3-year-old's diaper.

The drink coupon included in admission can be used at Nohyeong Dabang (다방, a retro Korean tea/coffee shop). I ordered strawberry-jumulleok (a chunky strawberry drink) and coffee.

I ordered strawberry-jumulleok and coffee. The strawberry-jumulleok was delicious with actual fruit bits to chew, and the coffee gave me a boost.

When you enter Nohyeong Supermarket, you first walk through a space packed with retro, old-timey objects. Once that door opens, the media art space begins.

What the media art was like with a 3-year-old

Nohyeong Supermarket is a space where light, video, and music come together for media art, and the overwhelming atmosphere is no joke. Our kid got so excited running around amid all the sparkling visuals.

With video unfolding across a huge screen in a dark room, it felt like our 3-year-old had stepped into another world entirely.

Our kid already loves watching TV or videos at home, so maybe that's why the huge-screen visuals here were an even bigger hit.

What I was most curious about was how our kid would react each time the visuals changed — there were plenty of "wow!" moments, and sometimes our kid moved along with the screen. Because the screen is huge and the colors and motion keep shifting, it was more fun to wander around and look at everything rather than stand still in one spot. It was especially cute watching our kid stare, fascinated, at light moving through the dark space.

Is Nohyeong Supermarket worth adding to a Jeju itinerary?

When people think of Jeju, they usually picture the sea, oreums (volcanic cones), waterfalls, cafés — that kind of thing. Visiting Nohyeong Supermarket this time, though, it clearly offered a different kind of charm from those natural attractions.

The upside was that you can visit even on bad-weather days, and it's a different kind of experience to share with a kid. Especially on a Jeju trip where you're out at outdoor spots all day, the kid gets tired and the parents' energy drops too, so fitting in an indoor stop like this in the middle of the day turned out to be a good call.

We stopped by Nohyeong Supermarket after visiting other attractions that day, and resting indoors for longer than expected really gave us the energy to push through the rest of the schedule.

Visiting Nohyeong Supermarket this time with our 3-year-old, we got to experience a completely different vibe from typical Jeju attractions. With a huge screen, light, and music all coming together as media art, it was a great one for a kid to watch and enjoy firsthand. Between the unique media art atmosphere and the tasty drinks, Nohyeong Supermarket is worth a visit all around.
