Jeju media art light tunnel and shattering aquarium, 50 min: Nohyeong

Hi, this is Migoning :) When it suddenly pours or the weather turns bad during a Jeju trip, figuring out an indoor course can be a headache. This time I visited Nohyeong Supermarket, one of the Jeju City attractions that's gone viral for its mysterious concept.

It's already a hot spot on social media for its unique worldbuilding and overwhelming media art, so I went in with high expectations.

Buying tickets at Nohyeong Supermarket: why the package ticket costs less

Walking into the lobby of Nohyeong Supermarket, you'll find a kiosk and a staffed box office neatly set up. Here's a very useful tip: instead of buying a single ticket, get the 'package ticket' at the box office — you'll get a drink plus admission to Nohyeong Supermarket at a discounted price.

Before going in, I first ordered a signature drink at the retro-mood Nohyeong Dabang (다방, café) right next door. I picked the strawberry muchim, with sweet strawberry chunks, and the tangy, rich Hallabong juice.

You're free to bring drinks into the exhibition, so you can carry your takeaway cup in and sip as you go, or finish it sitting at the café first and enter after.

The 3-minute preshow that starts in a black-and-white world

The moment you step through the entrance of Nohyeong Supermarket, all color vanishes and a vivid black-and-white, colorless world unfolds in front of you haha.

It begins with a unique worldbuilding concept: all the color in the world was sucked through a mysterious door.

Nohyeong Dabang, steeped in retro old-school charm, is done entirely in black-and-white tones — right down to the props and signage — giving off a strange sense of immersion, as if time had stopped.

After about 3 minutes of preshow, the 'forgotten door' slides open and a path into a new dimension unfolds.

Through the tunnel of light and the mirror ball passage

Before you reach the main hall, a mysterious passage stretches on, as though you've stepped into another world. You pass through a fantastical tunnel of light, where shimmering rainbow colors pour down like rain from above.

Walking through the shimmering curtains of light, feeling the beams brush your fingertips, is dreamy and enchanting enough to make you stop and take a photo. In the next space, countless mirror balls hang from the ceiling, reflecting a mysterious blue light and creating an otherworldly atmosphere, as if you've entered deep space.

Inside the 1,200-pyeong main hall with 20m ceilings

Past the passage of light and mirrors, the main hall appears, with gorgeous light and color pouring in from every direction! At roughly 1,200 pyeong with ceilings reaching up to 20m — the height of a 6-story building — the grand scale completely overwhelms the eye.

This isn't an exhibition you simply watch — it's a fully immersive media art space where you feel the waves of light with your whole body. From floor to ceiling, the vivid graphics move as if alive, showing exactly why this is one of the best Jeju City attractions for people of all ages.

Gopeullak, the maze-like hands-on space

Starting from Gopeullak (곱을락), the maze-like experience space on the lowest floor, it was full of fun for all five senses — walking on the floor projections and touching the walls.

The scene where the aquarium glass shatters: why 50 minutes felt short

Some of you might worry that media art can feel monotonous or dull. But Nohyeong Supermarket has such strong narrative coherence and graphic quality that the 50 minutes fly by completely absorbed.

In particular, the moment a giant sea creature swims through the deep blue ocean and the glass wall cracks and shatters with a loud crash gave a thrilling sense of immersion, like an actual aquarium wall breaking, lol.

There's much more story beyond this, and I'd recommend seeing it in person for the details haha. After the exhibition, the exit route leads right into the Nohyeong general store gift shop, which was a perfect way to wrap things up with some souvenir shopping.

Where Nohyeong Supermarket fits in a Jeju itinerary

Nohyeong Supermarket is located near the airport, so I'd recommend it as a Jeju City attraction to stop by at the start or end of your itinerary. If you're looking for a pleasant indoor date on a rainy day or a family outing course, this could be the pick for your Jeju trip.
